{"id":308700,"date":"2019-01-01T09:59:54","date_gmt":"2019-01-01T14:59:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.euvolution.com\/futurist-transhuman-news-blog\/uncategorized\/foreign-cyberattack-cripples-major-u-s-newspapers.php"},"modified":"2019-01-01T09:59:54","modified_gmt":"2019-01-01T14:59:54","slug":"foreign-cyberattack-cripples-major-u-s-newspapers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.euvolution.com\/futurist-transhuman-news-blog\/futurism\/foreign-cyberattack-cripples-major-u-s-newspapers.php","title":{"rendered":"Foreign Cyberattack Cripples Major U.S. Newspapers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p><div><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"158\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-assets.futurism.com\/2018\/12\/Newspaper-300x158.jpg\" class=\"attachment-medium size-medium wp-post-image\" alt=\"A cyberattack targeting the printing presses of several newspapers, delaying their delivery this weekend, appears to have originate from outside the U.S.\" style=\"padding-left:10px; padding-right: 10px;\"><\/div><h2>Late Delivery<\/h2><p>This&nbsp;weekend, several of the most widely circulated newspapers in the United States found themselves the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/local\/lanow\/la-me-ln-times-delivery-disruption-20181229-story.html\">target of a cyberattack<\/a> that reportedly originated on foreign soil.<\/p><p>Many questions about the attack remain unanswered, but one thing is certain:&nbsp;the media is under attack&nbsp;&mdash; and if something isn&rsquo;t done to protect it, we could be headed toward a future in which we can&rsquo;t believe anything we read.<\/p><h2>Stop the Presses<\/h2><p>The malware attack targeted newspaper printing plants run by&nbsp;<em>The Los Angeles Times<\/em>&nbsp;and Tribune Publishing,&nbsp;which owned <em>The Los Angeles Times<\/em> from April 2007 until June 2018 (and which, in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2018\/6\/18\/17476412\/tronc-tribune-publishing-name-change-la-times-sale\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">much-lampooned episode<\/a>, briefly changed its name to Tronc in 2016.)<\/p><p>The malware prevented editors from transmitting pages of the papers to printing presses, and it delayed the scheduled printing and delivery of the Saturday editions of several newspapers, including <em>The New York Times<\/em> and <em>The Wall Street Journal<\/em>.<\/p><p>Nobody is sure of the source of the attack, but several people with inside knowledge of Tribune&nbsp;told <em>The Los Angeles Times<\/em> that the attack appeared to be <a href=\"https:\/\/research.checkpoint.com\/ryuk-ransomware-targeted-campaign-break\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ryuk ransomware<\/a>. Experts have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/12\/30\/business\/media\/los-angeles-times-cyberattack.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">linked this software<\/a> to groups in North Korea and Eastern Europe, but for now, all <em>The Los Angeles Times<\/em> has confirmed is that the attack appears to have originated from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/12\/30\/business\/media\/los-angeles-times-cyberattack.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">outside the U.S.<\/a><\/p><h2>Media Under Attack<\/h2><p>As the name implies, ransomware attacks are typically financially motivated&nbsp;&mdash; attackers disrupt a company&rsquo;s operations and demand a ransom to end the disruption &mdash; but neither Tribune Publishing nor <em>The Los Angeles Times<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/12\/30\/business\/media\/los-angeles-times-cyberattack.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">has reported<\/a> any ransom demand. An anonymous source told <em>The Los Angeles Times<\/em> that the attackers didn&rsquo;t appear to steal any information either.<\/p><p>That means a likely motivation behind the attack was preventing newspaper readers from getting their news &mdash; and that is highly troubling.<\/p><p>Just this month, the majority of Americans admitted for the first time that they prefer to get their <a href=\"https:\/\/futurism.com\/social-media-newspapers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news from social media platforms<\/a> than from traditional print newspapers. While the latter sources are held to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spj.org\/ethicscode.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">journalistic standards<\/a> that place a premium on fact-checking and context, the former are notoriously&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/news\/2018-11-social-media-misinformation-winners.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rife with misinformation and bias<\/a>.<\/p><p>If foreign actors are able to further cripple the U.S.&rsquo;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.journalism.org\/fact-sheet\/newspapers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">already vulnerable<\/a>&nbsp;newspaper&nbsp;industry by literally preventing the printing of newspapers, the &ldquo;fake news&rdquo; that dominates our social media feeds could one day overshadow the <em>real<\/em> news &mdash; and we&rsquo;ve already gotten a glimpse of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2018\/04\/11\/601323233\/6-facts-we-know-about-fake-news-in-the-2016-election\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">disturbing impact<\/a> that can have on a democracy.<\/p><p><strong>READ MORE:<\/strong>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/local\/lanow\/la-me-ln-times-delivery-disruption-20181229-story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Malware Attack Disrupts Delivery of L.A.
