{"id":299667,"date":"2018-10-29T19:57:20","date_gmt":"2018-10-29T23:57:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.euvolution.com\/futurist-transhuman-news-blog\/uncategorized\/ai-can-tell-if-youre-depressed-by-reading-your-facebook-posts.php"},"modified":"2023-01-05T11:39:19","modified_gmt":"2023-01-05T16:39:19","slug":"ai-can-tell-if-youre-depressed-by-reading-your-facebook-posts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.euvolution.com\/futurist-transhuman-news-blog\/artificial-intelligence\/ai-can-tell-if-youre-depressed-by-reading-your-facebook-posts.php","title":{"rendered":"AI Can Tell if You\u2019re Depressed by Reading Your Facebook Posts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p><h2>Dr. Facebook<\/h2><p>It shouldn&rsquo;t come as much of a surprise, but Facebook knows a lot about you.<\/p><p>And while the information it collects about you <a href=\"https:\/\/futurism.com\/facebook-hack\/\">isn&rsquo;t exactly in the safest of hands<\/a>, it&nbsp;<em>could&nbsp;<\/em>give mental health care professionals a huge leg up in predicting your future mental well-being&nbsp;&mdash; if you&rsquo;re willing to hand over your login information.<\/p><p>In research <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pnas.org\/content\/early\/2018\/10\/09\/1802331115\">published this week<\/a>&nbsp;<em>Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences,&nbsp;<\/em>scientists at the University of Pennsylvania described how they were able to determine&nbsp;whether a particular Facebook user is likely to become depressed in the future, simply by analyzing their status updates.<\/p><h2>Robot Psychologists<\/h2><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/your-facebook-posts-can-reveal-if-youre-depressed\/\"><em>Wired <\/em><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/your-facebook-posts-can-reveal-if-youre-depressed\/\">reports<\/a>&nbsp;that the researchers used machine learning algorithms to analyze almost half a million Facebook posts &mdash; spanning a period of seven years&nbsp;&mdash; by 684 willing patients at a Philadelphia emergency ward.<\/p><p>&ldquo;We&rsquo;re increasingly understanding that what people do online is a form of behavior we can read with machine learning algorithms, the same way we can read any other kind of data in the world,&rdquo; UPenn psychologist Johannes Eichstaedt told the magazine.<\/p><p>The algorithms looked for markers of depression in the patients&rsquo; posts, and found that depressed individuals used more first-person language &mdash; a finding&nbsp;in line with many previous studies. The algorithm got so good at catching those markers&nbsp;that it could predict if a Facebook user was depressed up to three months prior to a formal diagnosis by a health care professional.<\/p><h2>The Human Touch<\/h2><p>For now, take these results with a grain of salt&nbsp;&mdash; this won&rsquo;t ever be a substitute for human psychologists, because there are far too many variables.
