{"id":298494,"date":"2018-10-29T19:47:48","date_gmt":"2018-10-29T23:47:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.euvolution.com\/futurist-transhuman-news-blog\/uncategorized\/theres-no-way-chinas-artificial-moon-will-work-says-expert.php"},"modified":"2018-10-29T19:47:48","modified_gmt":"2018-10-29T23:47:48","slug":"theres-no-way-chinas-artificial-moon-will-work-says-expert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.euvolution.com\/futurist-transhuman-news-blog\/futurism\/theres-no-way-chinas-artificial-moon-will-work-says-expert.php","title":{"rendered":"There\u2019s No Way China\u2019s Artificial Moon Will Work, Says Expert"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p><h2>Good Luck<\/h2><p>On October 10, a&nbsp;Chinese organization called the Tian Fu New Area Science Society&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/futurism.com\/the-byte\/artificial-moon-china\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">revealed plans<\/a> to replace <strong>the<\/strong> streetlights<strong> in the city of Chengdu<\/strong> with a satellite designed to reflect sunlight toward the Earth&rsquo;s surface at night.<\/p><p>But in a&nbsp;new&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.astronomy.com\/news\/2018\/10\/why-chinas-artificial-moon-probably-wont-work\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">interview with <em>Astronomy<\/em><\/a>, an associate professor of aerospace engineering at the University of Texas at Austin named&nbsp;Ryan Russel&nbsp;argued&nbsp;that based on what he&rsquo;s read, the artificial moon&nbsp;<strong>plan<\/strong> would be impossible to implement.<\/p><h2>Promised the Moon<\/h2><p>Wu Chunfeng, the head of the&nbsp;Tian Fu New Area Science Society, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chinadaily.com.cn\/a\/201810\/19\/WS5bc922f3a310eff303283431.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told <em>China Daily<\/em><\/a> the artificial moon would orbit about 310 miles above Earth, delivering an expected brightness humans would perceive to be about one-fifth that of a typical streetlight.<\/p><p>The plan is to launch one artificial moon in 2020 and then three more in 2022 if the first works as hoped. Together, these satellites could illuminate an area of up to 4,000 square miles, Chunfeng claims.<\/p><p>But Russell is far from convinced.<\/p><p>&ldquo;Their claim for 1 [low-earth orbit satellite] at [300 miles] must be a typo or misinformed spokesperson,&rdquo; he told <em>Astronomy<\/em>. &ldquo;The article I read implied you could hover a satellite over a particular city, which of course is not possible.&rdquo;<\/p><h2>Overkill&nbsp;Overhead<\/h2><p>To keep the satellite in place over Chengdu, it would need to be about 22,000 miles above the Earth&rsquo;s surface, said Russel, and its reflective surface would need to be massive to reflect sunlight from that distance.
