{"id":29247,"date":"2011-11-13T16:59:57","date_gmt":"2011-11-13T16:59:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.longevitymedicine.tv\/an-interview-with-michael-rae\/"},"modified":"2024-08-17T16:59:25","modified_gmt":"2024-08-17T20:59:25","slug":"an-interview-with-michael-rae","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.euvolution.com\/futurist-transhuman-news-blog\/longevity-medicine\/an-interview-with-michael-rae.php","title":{"rendered":"An Interview With Michael Rae"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Michael Rae is the co-author of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Ending-Aging-Rejuvenation-Breakthroughs-Lifetime\/dp\/0312367066\">Ending Aging<\/a>, a research assistant at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sens.org\">SENS Foundation<\/a>, and a long-standing figure of note in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fightaging.org\/archives\/2001\/11\/calorie-restriction-explained.php\">calorie restriction<\/a> community: \"I would say that one exciting recent development is that, with an increase in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fightaging.org\/archives\/2011\/05\/sens-foundation-year-end-report-for-2010-now-available.php\">our research budget<\/a> this year (based on performance last year and a more optimistic financial outlook from many of our donors), we've recently approved funding for several quite important and exciting research projects. One is a project whose ultimate aim is to <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tissue_engineering\">tissue engineer<\/a> a new <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thymus\">thymus<\/a>. The thymus is a gland located near the breast bone, where <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/T_cell\">T-cells<\/a> (an important immune cell) mature. The thymus shrinks with age, and the tissues on the outer layer of the organ where T-cells mature lose their architectural integrity, leading to a progressive failure to produce new T-cells to fight novel infections. The thymus engineering project, which is underway with SENS Foundation support at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wakehealth.edu\/WFIRM\" \/>Wake Forest University Institute for Regenerative Medicine<\/a> by Dr. John Jackson and colleagues, is to use a trick that you may have heard of having been used to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fightaging.org\/archives\/2011\/08\/populating-a-decellularized-heart-with-embryonic-stem-cells.php\">make a new rat heart using the tissue scaffolding of another's<\/a>. ... The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sens.org\/conferences\/sens5\">fifth SENS Conference<\/a> was, indeed, quite amazing!
