Six physicists came up with the theoretical mechanism to describe how the boson would work, but the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences can only split a Nobel Prize three ways.<\/p><p>Here are the contenders: <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?hl=en&amp;lr=&amp;id=zMoLDTiM3aQC&amp;oi=fnd&amp;pg=PA127&amp;ots=5hym3_pcer&amp;sig=E_cbIZPcoDIHfND7h5-3JM1yVMg#v=onepage&amp;q&amp;f=false\">Robert Brout<\/a> and Fran&ccedil;ois Englert in Belgium, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.osti.gov\/energycitations\/product.biblio.jsp?osti_id=4001997\">Peter Higgs<\/a> in Scotland, and <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.osti.gov\/energycitations\/product.biblio.jsp?osti_id=4676767\">Tom Kibble<\/a> in London with Gerald Guralnik and Carl R. Hagen in the United States. Each group published their papers at almost the same time (all in 1964) and devised their descriptions independently.<\/p><p>As <em>Nature News<\/em> <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nature.com\/news\/2010\/100804\/full\/news.2010.390.html?s=news_rss\">reports<\/a>, the debate arose after a web <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/higgshunting.fr\/\">advertisement<\/a> for a meeting last week on the Higgs mentioned only Brout, Englert, and Higgs. Though Kibble, Guralnik, and Hagen were last to publish and cited the other physicists&rsquo; papers, the three recently shared an American Physical Society award with the other trio in part for the describing the boson&rsquo;s mass-giving technique: the so-called <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.scholarpedia.org\/article\/Englert-Brout-Higgs-Guralnik-Hagen-Kibble_mechanism_%28history%29\">Englert-Brout-Higgs-Guralnik-Hagen-Kibble mechanism<\/a>.<\/p><p>Given that the Nobel also can&rsquo;t be awarded posthumously, that may leave something else for the six to consider, CERN physicist John Ellis <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nature.com\/news\/2010\/100804\/full\/news.2010.390.html?s=news_rss\">said<\/a> to <em>Nature News<\/em>:<\/p><blockquote><p>&ldquo;The first three in the Nobel queue probably feel quite relaxed&mdash;all they have to do is stay alive until the the particle is discovered&hellip;.
