Leaving Lake Tekapo we journeyed up through Mackenzie country which is a large area of flat scrub land surrounded by mountains. It was named after James Mackenzie who first discovered the area and decided it was a great place to raise sheep. A lot of other things are named after this chap roads dams towns and the pass through which he entered the area.
