\n MOORHEAD - They call Randy Sutrisno the fish whisperer.\n <\/p>\n
\n The Indonesia native had a lifelong passion for fish before
\n deciding to study biology at Minnesota State University
\n Moorhead.\n <\/p>\n
\n Now in his senior year, Sutrisno finds that his fish hobby
\n helps his success as a scientific researcher.\n <\/p>\n
\n \u201cHe has this natural eye for how to keep fish happy and
\n healthy,\u201d said biosciences professor Brian Wisenden. \u201cIt\u2019s an
\n intuitive thing that comes with experience.\u201d\n <\/p>\n
\n Sutrisno got his first guppies as a 5-year-old living in
\n Jakarta, Indonesia.\n <\/p>\n
\n His father also had an interest in fish, and from there the
\n hobby grew.\n <\/p>\n
\n \u201cIt\u2019s kind of contagious,\u201d said Sutrisno, 23.\n <\/p>\n
\n The family has 12 aquariums in their home. In Moorhead,
\n Sutrisno only has room for one fish in his dorm room.\n <\/p>\n
\n But in MSUM\u2019s Science Lab Building, Sutrisno has three labs
\n full of zebrafish, bettas, convict cichlids and other fish that
\n he cares for.\n <\/p>\n
\n Once Sutrisno decided to attend college in the United States, a
\n cousin encouraged him to check out Minnesota universities.\n <\/p>\n
\n Sutrisno said he was drawn to MSUM for its biology program and
\n the opportunity to do research as an undergraduate student.\n <\/p>\n
\n He also wanted to work with Wisenden, who specializes in the
\n behavioral ecology of fish.\n <\/p>\n
\n MSUM\u2019s aquatic labs outshine facilities available at some
\n research universities, Wisenden said.\n <\/p>\n
\n The university recently began doing research with four
\n 1,000-gallon experiment ponds that allow scientists to do large
\n social interaction studies.\n <\/p>\n
\n Sutrisno, Wisenden and two other students are co-authors of an
\n article that will soon be published in the international,
\n peer-reviewed journal Behaviour.\n <\/p>\n
\n The research focused on maternal effects on the personalities
\n of zebrafish.\n <\/p>\n
\n Sutrisno also is studying betta fish and the behavior patterns
\n between mating males and mating females.\n <\/p>\n
\n He plans to graduate next December and return to Indonesia,
\n possibly to work in aquaculture.\n <\/p>\n
\n Wisenden has had more than 60 MSUM students published in
\n scientific journals as undergraduate students.\n <\/p>\n
\n For Sutrisno, a lot of the work has come naturally because of
\n his experience.\n <\/p>\n
\n \u201cThat makes him, as a research student, someone who\u2019s a cut
\n above the others because he has this innate fascination and
\n longstanding passion for fish,\u201d Wisenden said.\n <\/p>\n
