\n For much of the past decade, many Swampscott teachers were paid
\n an incorrect amount, because a clause in their contract
\n concerning longevity was misunderstood.\n <\/p>\n

\n While the problem has been corrected, some teachers over that
\n time period were overpaid, while others were underpaid,
\n according to School Department Business Manager Ed Cronin at
\n the School Committee\u2019s meeting on Wednesday, Jan. 18.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cThe results basically show that going back to 2003, teachers
\n were incorrectly paid longevity,\u201d Cronin said.  \u201cWhat we\u2019d
\n like to do is rectify that problem.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n Cronin said he had been meeting with leaders of the teachers\u2019
\n union starting last fall to determine \u201cexactly what [the
\n longevity clause] was meant to say and what the impact was and
\n broke down the results.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n The overall results showed a total of about $40,000 went to the
\n overpaid teachers, while the teachers who were underpaid were
\n owed about $30,000.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cWe\u2019ve put in place something that will fix the problem going
\n forward,\u201d said Cronin. \u201cSo it will no longer exist. But we
\n still have past inequities to deal with.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n The School Committee agreed to Cronin\u2019s recommendation that the
\n School Department pay the $30,000 owed to those teachers who
\n were underpaid and forget about the money that was overpaid to
\n the other group of teachers.\n <\/p>\n

\n The motion was approved on a 4-0 vote, after committee member
\n Marianne Hartmann recused herself. Hartmann is a school nurse.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cI think it\u2019s important for the public to understand, this is
\n not something that we are giving away,\u201d said committee member
\n Rick Kraft. \u201cWe really made a very serious evaluation of this
\n in terms of what the impact would be if we to tried to collect
\n that money [that was overpaid]. And doing that would have had
\n such a negative impact on the teaching environment and the
\n school environment that really the best thing to do is just
\n move on from here.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n Cronin explained that the amount of money involved was much
\n less than 1 percent of the school\u2019s $26 million budget.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cThe work that was done with the union here is fabulous and I
\n would like to keep that feeling alive,\u201d Cronin said. \u201cWe are
\n talking small money, especially given the cost involved in
\n trying to collect backpay that goes back to 2003 and that would
\n eat into any money that we would collect anyway.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cThe committee is very, very committed to the building of the
\n trust and the building of collaboration [with the teachers],\u201d
\n Superintendent Lynne Celli said. \u201cI would like to personally
\n thank the committee for taking this position, and it\u2019s most
\n appreciated.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n A dozen or so teachers attended the meeting, including
\n Swampscott Education Association official Jon Flanagan, who
\n thanked the committee after their vote.\n <\/p>\n
