I knew the story smelled bad right away<sup><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/pipes.yahoo.com\/pipes\/pipe.info?_id=b1f7827b1dfe342d3c7cc9be64d477ac#footnote\">*<\/a><\/sup> but was a bit busy at the meeting, so I couldn&rsquo;t attack it. <\/p><p>Happily, my pal Annalee Newitz at io9 did. <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/io9.com\/5585294\/methane-bubble-doomsday-story-debunked\">She talked to actual experts<\/a> and found out there simply isn&rsquo;t enough methane leaking from the oil plume to do much except to the local environment. In my humble opinion, this ecological disaster sucks enough without adding hysteria to it. <\/p><p><em>Tip o&rsquo; the top hat to <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/rob_sheridan\/status\/18385237288\">Rob Sheridan<\/a> and <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/aeontriad\/status\/18399651418\">aeontriad<\/a>.<\/em><\/p><p><a rel=\"nofollow\" name=\"footnote\"><\/a><\/p><hr width=\"30%\" align=\"left\"><em><sup>*<\/sup> Yes, I made a fart joke (<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/blogs.discovermagazine.com\/badastronomy\/2009\/01\/19\/mars-methane-media-mess\/\">it&rsquo;s not the first time<\/a>).
