Hall<\/a>&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.fiercehealthit.com\/story\/natural-language-processing-tool-flags-breast-prostate-cancer\/2012-08-03#ixzz22jOsB2kk%20\" target=\"_blank\">FierceHealthIT<\/a><\/span><\/p><div><div><div><div><div><div><div><span>Researchers claimed success using an SAS-based natural-language processing (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.tissuepathology.com\/weblog\/2012\/07\/jpmorgan-chase-unit-to-acquire-m-modal-in-11-billion-transaction.html\" rel=\"autointext\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"JPMorgan Chase unit to acquire M-Modal in  (.1 billion transaction\">NLP<\/a>) tool to detect breast and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tissuepathology.com\/weblog\/2012\/08\/what-would-happen-without-psa-testing.html\" rel=\"autointext\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"What Would Happen Without PSA Testing?\">prostate cancers<\/a> from pathology reports, according to a&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/jamia.bmj.com\/content\/early\/2012\/08\/02\/amiajnl-2012-000928.full\" target=\"_blank\">study<\/a>&nbsp;published this week in the&nbsp;<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jamia.org\/\" rel=\"homepage\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association\">Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association<\/a>.<\/em><\/span><\/div><\/div><div><p><span>Results from the SAS-based coding, extraction, and nomenclature tool (SCENT) were compared with a random sample of 400 breast and 400 prostate <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tissuepathology.com\/weblog\/2012\/08\/what-would-happen-without-psa-testing.html\" rel=\"autointext\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"What Would Happen Without PSA Testing?\">cancer patients<\/a> diagnosed at <a href=\"http:\/\/kp.org\/\" rel=\"homepage\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Kaiser Permanente\">Kaiser Permanente<\/a> Southern California whose results were classified manually.<\/span><\/p><p><span>SCENT successfully identified 51 of 54 primary and 60 of 61 recurrent cancers. It flagged only three false positives from 793 known benign results. Despite positive results related to EMR usage, questions remain. How can physician practices best use <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Emergency_Medical_Retrieval_Service\" rel=\"wikipedia\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Emergency Medical Retrieval Service\">EMRs<\/a> to focus business and clinical operations, improve outcomes and engage patients in healthcare decision making?&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.fiercepracticemanagement.com\/offer\/ge_whitepaper_2012?source=drawer\">Learn more<\/a>.<\/span><\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><p><span>The authors noted that previous research has found natural language processing tools useful in coding and extracting information from clinical text. Indeed a recent paper published in&nbsp;<em>Radiology&nbsp;<\/em>cited success with a tool to parse data from records to build a repository of&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.fiercehealthit.com\/story\/studies-show-data-minings-promise-radiology-dose-monitoring\/2012-07-27\" target=\"_blank\">data to improve dosing recommendations<\/a>.<\/span><\/p><p><span>They attributed the slow rate of adoption, however, to difficulty in integration with clinical data systems, technical complexity, and habitual use of medical claims data.<\/span><\/p><p><span>Creating a common dictionary of terms can be painstaking work as illustrated in a study on the use of NLP in breast cancer research&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.jpathinformatics.org\/article.asp?issn=2153-3539;year=2012;volume=3;issue=1;spage=23;epage=23;aulast=Buckley\" target=\"_blank\">published<\/a>&nbsp;recently in the<em>Journal of Pathology Informatics<\/em>.
