The digitalisation of microscopy images opens up new possibilities.<\/strong><\/span><\/p><p><span>A consortium led by the Centre for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tissuepathology.com\/weblog\/2012\/05\/siimrbj-announce-winners-of-the-top-5-medical-imaging-it-projects-of-2012-.html\" rel=\"autointext\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"UPMC Digital Pathology Consult Portal Among Top 5 Medical Imaging IT Projects of 2012\">Medical Imaging<\/a> and Visualisation (CMIV) at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.liu.se\/\" rel=\"homepage\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Link&ouml;ping University\">Link&ouml;ping University<\/a> (LiU) has just been granted Vinnova (Sweden&rsquo;s Innovation Agency) funding for research and development in image-based pathology.&nbsp;The aim is to create new, efficient workflows and IT tools, partly through advances in image analysis and visualisation.<\/span><\/p><p><span><strong>In addition to CMIV, the consortium includes:<\/strong><\/span><\/p><ul><li><span>County councils in <a href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=58.4166666667,15.75&amp;spn=1.0,1.0&amp;q=58.4166666667,15.75%20(%C3%96sterg%C3%B6tland)&amp;t=h\" rel=\"geolocation\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"&Ouml;sterg&ouml;tland\">&Ouml;sterg&ouml;tland<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=57.7833333333,14.1666666667&amp;spn=0.1,0.1&amp;q=57.7833333333,14.1666666667%20(J%C3%B6nk%C3%B6ping)&amp;t=h\" rel=\"geolocation\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"J&ouml;nk&ouml;ping\">J&ouml;nk&ouml;ping<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=56.6666666667,16.3666666667&amp;spn=0.1,0.1&amp;q=56.6666666667,16.3666666667%20(Kalmar)&amp;t=h\" rel=\"geolocation\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Kalmar\">Kalmar<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?ll=60.780619,16.655273&amp;spn=1.0,1.0&amp;q=60.780619,16.655273%20(G%C3%A4vleborg%20County)&amp;t=h\" rel=\"geolocation\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"G&auml;vleborg County\">G&auml;vleborg<\/a><\/span><\/li><li><span>Swerea IVF Research Institute<\/span><\/li><li><span>Sectra, a medical technology firm<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span>The grant of just over <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Swedish_krona\" rel=\"wikipedia\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Swedish krona\">SEK<\/a> 9 million comes from Vinnova&rsquo;s call for &ldquo;Challenge-driven innovation&rdquo;, and the project is one of 30 granted funding in competition with projects from all over the country.<\/span><\/p><p>&nbsp;<\/p><\/div><div><a href=\"http:\/\/feeds.feedburner.com\/~ff\/DigitalPathologyBlog?a=kBJMV-sHSTY:ASHPngSOTZM:yIl2AUoC8zA\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.eugenesis.com\/wp-content\/plugins\/wp-o-matic\/cache\/35216_DigitalPathologyBlog?d=yIl2AUoC8zA\" border=\"0\" style=\"padding-left:10px;
