Wow, the WISE spacecraft launched from Vandenberg AFB this morning.\u00a0 I posted the video in case anybody who wanted to see it could.\u00a0 I was busy trying to solve some stupid \u201ccrises\u201d at work and missed it completely \u2013 the so called \u201ccrises\u201d was some billing error that turned out to be nothing to do with me.<\/p>\n

The launch was just the first mile stone for WISE, the second occurred\u00a0 shortly after the spacecraft separated from rocket, it oriented itself so the solar panels could soak up the sunlight it will need for power.\u00a0 Once that was complete, another 17 minutes passed and valves on the cryostat opened so the WISE instrument can cool down.<\/p>\n

The WISE instrument must be colder than the objects it is observing and some of them can be very cold.\u00a0 So they use\u2026.get this\u2026hydrogen ICE (!!!) for the cooling.\u00a0 Oh dear, we are looking at \u2013 447 o<\/sup>F.\u00a0 WOW!<\/p>\n

On another note, did anybody get to see the meteor shower?\u00a0 I am hearing it was very good.\u00a0 It was raining here, yeah rain.\u00a0 When the rain started the thermometer read 32 o<\/sup>F, not good, however we climbed to near 40 and right here so I am glad about that.\u00a0 I am going to try and watch tonight, but I’m not real hopeful.<\/p>\n

Those hoping to read Marian\u2019s response to the riddle, you need only to wait a bit longer.\u00a0 Don\u2019t worry, it\u2019s coming.<\/p>\n
