The Tris Belford Realty Group U16 girls Belleville Comets played it cool at the 2017 Nepean Hotspurs Friendship soccer tournament last weekend in Ottawa. <\/p>\n
Comets complied a perfect 4-and-0 slate, including a 1-0 win over the Russell Raiders in the gold medal match. Heidi LaCosta netted the tournament-winning goal. <\/p>\n
Earlier, Comets overpowered OSU Power 7-1 on goals by LaCosta, with four, Anna Noronha, Peyton Barnabi and Morgan Hawley. In a 3-1 win over Ottawa City Blue, local snipers were Hawley, LaCosta and Noronha. Victoria Lippitt posted the clean sheet for Belleville in a scoreless draw with the West Ottawa Warriors. <\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Comets continued to spread the message of the dangers of unanchored soccer goalposts at the tournament, which is fast becoming a trademark of their 2017 season. Together with competitors from other clubs at the Hotspurs tourney, Comets players marked goalposts with checkered tape in honour of #anchored4garrett. <\/p>\n
Garrett Mills of Napanee was killed on May 12 when an unsecured soccer net collapsed on him while he was hanging out with friends at a local soccer field. He was 15. <\/p>\n
Since then, Mills' father Dave Mills (a Quinte Broadcasting radio personality known as Buzz Collins) told Postmedia Network: I will make every effort in the days, weeks, months and years to come to ensure that this death was not in vain. It didn't have to happen. <\/p>\n
Mills is working to raise awareness of the dangers of unanchored soccer goalposts and why they need to be secured at all times. <\/p>\n
