Around the Refuge <\/p>\n
There are activities year-round at Ohio River Islands National Wildlife Refuge including wildlife viewing, photography, fishing and hunting. Learn more on our Visitor Activities page. <\/p>\n
The refuge is a natural area. Be mindful of poison ivy, thorny plants, ticks, bees, and mosquitoes. Observe wildlife from a safe and respectful distance. Forty species of native freshwater mussels live within the refuge waters on the Ohio River. This includes six federally endangered mussel species: fanshell, pink mucket, sheepnose, spectaclecase, snuffbox, and rayed bean. Mussels are important to the health of a river ecosystem. They are filter feeders, which helps reduce silt, sediment, and pollutants in the water. <\/p>\n
