Nor are his teammates.

Its not good enough for the Comets, though, who closed last year by winning 10 of their last 11 games, and have opened 2014-2015 by winning nine of their first 10. Add it up and it is 19 of 21, a run most teams would be thrilled with.

The one problem is the two losses came in succession to the same team Philip. The Scotties ended the Comets season last year in the first round of the District 14B tournament, and wouldnt you know it, the two teams opened this season with Philip winning 74-63.

Other than that, it's all good for Rapid City Christian.

Weve spent the last few years working hard and looking forward to this, said Stahlecker, as Rapid City Christian hosts Edgemont tonight at Hart Ranch. Were not surprised to be where we are at now, but were still looking forward, knowing that we have to get better.

First-year head coach Kyle Courtney credits much of their early success to the hard work put forth by the team and last years coaching staff then head coach Jerry Wheeler and assistant Andre Truitt for laying the groundwork. The Comets were 13-6 last season.

Things had started to turn; they had some success last year, said Courtney, an Iowa native who had coaching stints at Christian schools in Alabama and California before taking over the Comets this season. What we have done, this group of boys have committed to the aspect of, there is no short cut to success. It comes in the offseason, putting time in and every day in practice.

The Comets still have a few stumbling blocks to overcome, namely getting past district and regional foes Philip, New Underwood and even White River.

Junior point guard Paul McLaughlin said they started out of the gates against Philip a little slow this season, but they werent family yet. He said they are still not where they need to be, but they are getting there.

Our coach is pointing us in the right area, so we have had some success lately, McLaughlin said.

Continue reading here:

High school basketball: Comets off to fast start, but want more

Rapid City Christian senior post Curtis Stahlecker isnt surprised with his teams fast start, coming off of last seasons strong finish. Continue reading →

[182498

post-178046","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-comets-2
