Workington Comets bid for Premier League glory came to a crushing end at the hands of the vastly superior Edinburgh Monarchs. <\/p>\n

Having lost 60-34 away at Edinburgh on Friday night, Workington needed a maximum of three points in the return fixture at Derwent Park on Saturday to keep their hopes alive. <\/p>\n
But Monarchs, who have been leaps and bounds ahead of most Premier League teams this season, came away from west Cumbria with four away points in a 50-40 victory. <\/p>\n
Monarchs will now contest the play-off grand final against either Scunthorpe, Somerset or Ipswich. <\/p>\n
Saturdays clash was a tight affair for most of the meeting, but following a 5-1 in heat 11, Monarchs pulled away to clinch a comfortable victory. <\/p>\n
Comets recorded just two wins all night, with Ricky Wells (10 points) the highest scorer for the Cumbrian club. Sam Masters (12 points) was the most impressive Edinburgh rider on the night. <\/p>\n
Tony Jackson, Comets team manager, was gracious in defeat. He said: Edinburgh has been by far and wide the standout team this season. <\/p>\n
We knew we would be up against it. We were glad to get seven riders on the track, but it wasnt our full team. <\/p>\n
