Our undergraduate and graduate degree programs are designed to provide students with an engaging and challenging academic experience. Our Department is small enough to offer personal attention to students, yet large enough to provide opportunities for students in the areas of research, teaching, and service. Undergraduate and graduate students work alongside faculty to conduct original research, often presenting their work at academic conferences and co-authoring scholarly publications.

Undergraduate students, Sadia Akram (left) and Johnny Avants experiment with non-Newtonian fluids and liquid nitrogen at the Chemistry Privateer Plunge Event.

Many graduate students are offered teaching assistant positions and exceptional undergraduate students can serve as lab teaching assistants or tutors. Our Chemistry Learning Center offers free walk-in tutoring five days per week and is available to students for group meetings and study sessions.

Through the Chemistry Club and Graduate Chemical Society students can participate in science related community service through our outreach initiatives with the Louisiana Children's Museum and local schools. Student engagement is one of our priorities and each week during the Department's seminar, visiting academic or industrial speakers spend the day talking with faculty and students about research, current developments, and employment opportunities in chemistry.

Visit the undergraduate, graduate, and organizations pages to learn about our programs. Our faculty have distinguished themselves in a wide variety of areas including analytical, inorganic, materials, organic, and physical chemistry as well as biochemistry. Inquiries to individual faculty members about their research are always welcome. Faculty contact information can be found on the Directory page.

The Department of Chemistry will award several scholarships to continuing chemistry majors. Students must currently be a BS chemistry major (students with more than one major must have a BS chemistry as one of them). Awards of up to $2000 will be made in January 2016. Students graduating in December 2015 are not eligible. The deadline for application is November 15, 2015 (11:59 pm). applications must be made via the link provided below.

See original here:
Department of Chemistry | University of New Orleans

Welcome to the Chemistry Department at the University of New Orleans!
