One man was shot dead by police just outside Medicine Hat Saturday as authorities followed up on a missing persons investigation. <\/p>\n
A missing person was reported to city police Friday evening with the investigation leading an MHPS officer to a vehicle located on a rural property just south of South Boundary Road on Range Road 60 at 1:30 p.m. Saturday. <\/p>\n
The officer was confronted by an armed individual at that time. <\/p>\n
A standoff involving heavily armed officers some with sniper rifles ensued during the afternoon. Police confirmed the man was shot dead when he attempted to leave the area. A news release from the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) released Sunday afternoon says a Medicine Hat police officer fired one shot, which hit the male, who later died from his injuries. <\/p>\n
There is belief criminal activity occurred on the property prior to police arrival and the RCMP Major Crime Division will be investigating all criminal activities, including the confrontation with the firearm, said RCMP Insp. Joe McGeough during a joint RCMP, city police conference Saturday evening. <\/p>\n
The age of the dead man, his link to the missing persons investigation and exact time he was shot is not being released at this time as ASIRT has taken over investigating the situation. <\/p>\n
