PALM COAST Palm Coast Gymnastics is bending over backward to raise money by attempting to set a Guinness World Record for longest line of people doing the splits near the Flagler Beach Pier on Saturday. <\/p>\n
To earn the title in this new record category, the line must be at least 1,640 feet long, according to Sara Wilcox, a representative for Guinness World Records. <\/p>\n
For all new mass-participation record categories, like this one, the minimum amount of people needed for the record to count is 250, she said in an email. <\/p>\n
But the gymnastics organization is planning on rolling out a lot more participants than that. <\/p>\n
We actually kind of averaged out everybody as 4 feet and if every person who is 4 feet came wed need 410, said Kenny Rosa, president of the Palm Coast Gymnastics parents association, which submitted the application for the new category to create a fundraiser. <\/p>\n
Me and my wife were just trying to find different ideas that we could do to raise money to do something special for gymnastics and Palm Coast in general and we started looking for things, he said. <\/p>\n
By donating $5, which will go toward things like travel, private lessons and a banquet, anyone who can hold a 180-degree split for two minutes can participate, according to Kelly Hesbeens, owner of Palm Coast Gymnastics. <\/p>\n
Were obviously trying to go for more than (1,640 feet) so I offered it to as many dance schools and gymnastics places that are in the community, as well as Jacksonville all the way to Tampa, Hesbeens said. I dont know how many are coming here, but Ive had gyms call and say Oh, were bringing 30 kids, or Oh, were bringing 10 kids. <\/p>\n
Palm Coast Gymnastics alone will take about 200 participants, but Rosa thinks they have only a 50\/50 chance of sticking their goal. <\/p>\n
