{"id":1063511,"date":"2013-07-10T20:26:00","date_gmt":"2013-07-11T00:26:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.immortalitymedicine.tv\/stem-cell-therapy\/pay-for-eggs-legislation-strange-bedfellows-and-existential-questions.php"},"modified":"2024-08-17T20:30:04","modified_gmt":"2024-08-18T00:30:04","slug":"pay-for-eggs-legislation-strange-bedfellows-and-existential-questions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.euvolution.com\/futurist-transhuman-news-blog\/stem-cell-therapy\/pay-for-eggs-legislation-strange-bedfellows-and-existential-questions.php","title":{"rendered":"Pay-for-Eggs Legislation: Strange Bedfellows and Existential Questions"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>&nbsp;The <a href=\"http:\/\/californiastemcellreport.blogspot.com\/2013\/07\/california-legislation-human-egg-sales.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">California pay-for-eggs bill<\/a><br>today generated a feature article that said the legislation has<br>&ldquo;sparked an unusual lineup of partisans on both sides and resonates<br>far beyond&rdquo; the Golden State.<\/div><div><\/div><div><a href=\"http:\/\/capitolweekly.net\/article.php?_c=11ke1x29yfa1r6v&amp;xid=11kdkqvnmb21t5p&amp;done=.11ke3ha6p4fd5dl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The piece<\/a> by <b>Alex Mathews<\/b> on <b>Capitol<br>Weekly<\/b>, a news service specializing in California government and<br>political coverage, said,<\/div><blockquote><p>&ldquo;(C)omplicating the issue is<br>California&rsquo;s role as a national leader in stem cell research, the<br>existential question of who or what constitutes a research subject,<br>and finally, the fact that compensation for fertility purposes is and<br>has been legal for years in California.&rdquo;<\/p><\/blockquote><div>Mathews was writing about the measure<br><b>(AB926) <\/b>by Assemblywoman <b>Susan Bonilla<\/b>, D-Concord, that removes a ban<br>in California on paying women for eggs for scientific research.<br>Currently women can be paid in California for providing eggs for IVF.<br>The measure would not alter a ban on compensation for eggs in<br>research financed by the $3 billion California stem cell agency.<br>However, later this month, the agency will <a href=\"http:\/\/californiastemcellreport.blogspot.com\/2013\/07\/eggs-and-cash-stem-cell-agency.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">consider modifying its position somewhat.<\/a><\/div><div><\/div><div>The bill has passed the legislature and<br>is on its way to Gov. <b>Jerry Brown<\/b>. The industry association<br>sponsoring the bill expects the governor to sign it later this month<br>although the governor, as a general rule, does not make public<br>commitments on legislation.<\/div><div><\/div><div>Mathews' article covered the background<br>and arguments on the bill and noted that it has received little<br>mainstream media attention.<\/div><div><\/div><table cellpadding=\"0\" cellspacing=\"0\"><tbody><tr><td><a href=\"https:\/\/www.immortalitymedicine.tv\/wp-content\/plugins\/wp-o-matic\/cache\/5d8607364b_Ikemoto--Lisa-uc-davis-photo.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/www.immortalitymedicine.tv\/wp-content\/plugins\/wp-o-matic\/cache\/5d8607364b_Ikemoto--Lisa-uc-davis-photo.jpg\" style=\"padding-left:10px; padding-right: 10px;\"><\/a><\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Lisa Ikemoto<br>UC Davis photo<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><div>She also quoted<b> Lisa<\/b> <b>Ikemoto<\/b>, a law<br>professor and bioethicist at <b>UC Davis,<\/b> on the sensitive nature of the<br>issue.  Ikemoto said,<\/div><blockquote><p>&ldquo;On the fertility side, it&rsquo;s<br>politically hard to touch because it&rsquo;s all around family formation.<br>Nobody wants to restrict family formation. On the research side, when<br>the issue of payment for eggs came up, it was connected with human<br>embryonic stem cell research, and human embryonic stem cell research<br>was politicized from the outset.&rdquo;<\/p><\/blockquote><div>Mathews also wrote about the strange<br>bedfellows opposing the bill.
