You are one of the<br \/>\n    most respected players on tour,\" Djokovic said.\n  <\/p>\n<p>\n    \"We made history tonight. Unfortunately, there couldn&#039;t be two<br \/>\n    winners tonight.\"\n  <\/p>\n<p>\n    Nadal was gracious in gut-wrenching defeat.\n  <\/p>\n<p>\n    \"Congratulations to Novak and his team; they deserve it. They<br \/>\n    are something fantastic,\" the world No.2 said.\n  <\/p>\n<p>\n    \"I will never, ever will forget this match. Even if I lost, it<br \/>\n    was very, very special to me.\"\n  <\/p>\n<p>\n    Djokovic&#039;s epic triumph from a service break down in the fifth<br \/>\n    and deciding set placed the 24-year-old alongside his<br \/>\n    vanquished Spanish foe and fellow all-time greats Roger<br \/>\n    Federer, Pete Sampras and Rod Laver as only the fifth man in<br \/>\n    the 45-year open era to win three consecutive majors.\n  <\/p>\n<p>\n    Djokovic will now head to the French Open in May bidding to<br \/>\n    join the legendary Laver in an exclusive club of just two<br \/>\n    players to have held all four grand slam men&#039;s singles trophies<br \/>\n    simultaneously.\n  <\/p>\n<p>\n    And after thwarting Nadal for a seventh straight time in nine<br \/>\n    phenomenal months, Djokovic will arrive at Roland Garros also<br \/>\n    striving to become the first man since Donald Budge in 1937-38<br \/>\n    to complete a non-calendar-year grand slam sweep.\n  <\/p>\n<p>\n    For Nadal, the misery continues with Djokovic maintaining a<br \/>\n    potent mental edge over the Spaniard in much the same way as<br \/>\n    Nadal seemingly lives rent-free inside Federer&#039;s head.\n  <\/p>\n<p>\n    Nadal could see the finish line when he led the Serb 4-2 in a<br \/>\n    fifth set full of twists and turns.\n  <\/p>\n<p>\n    But the Spaniard dropped serve twice as Djokovic rallied to win<br \/>\n    five of the last six games to take the match.\n  <\/p>\n<p>\n    Nadal had been hoping to climb to equal fourth place alongside<br \/>\n    Laver and Bjorn Borg on the all-time grand slam leaderboard<br \/>\n    with an 11th career major, but instead departed Melbourne Park<br \/>\n    with a somewhat dubious, if undeserving, place in history.\n  <\/p>\n<p>\n    The 25-year-old Majorcan is now the only man in the open era to<br \/>\n    lose three successive grand slam finals after his latest<br \/>\n    disappointment followed four-set defeats to Djokovic at<br \/>\n    Wimbledon and the US Open last year.\n  <\/p>\n<p>\n    But while Djokovic converted two-sets-to-love leads in London<br \/>\n    and New York, he had to fight tooth and nail to win the 30th<br \/>\n    instalment of their enthralling series.\n  <\/p>\n<p>\n    Apart from the nigh-indestructible Nadal, Djokovic had to<br \/>\n    overcome an untimely nine-minute rain delay to close the roof<br \/>\n    at Rod Laver Arena and then climb off the canvas in the fifth.\n  <\/p>\n<p>\n    Nadal had just played a miraculous game to hold serve from<br \/>\n    love-40 for 4-4 in the fourth set when the roof was shut, at<br \/>\n    the Spaniard&#039;s behest, after four hours of riveting action.\n  <\/p>\n<p>\n    But when play resumed, the Serb held his serve and nerve to go<br \/>\n    up 5-4 before the set was decided in a tense tiebreaker.\n  <\/p>\n<p>\n    Djokovic stood on the brink of victory at 5-3, only to commit<br \/>\n    two unforced errors and helplessly watch Nadal bring up set<br \/>\n    point with a booming unreturnable serve.\n  <\/p>\n<p>\n    Djokovic sent the capacity crowd into a frenzy when he pulled a<br \/>\n    forehand wide to ensure a fifth and deciding set.\n  <\/p>\n<p>\n    Re-energised after drawing level, Nadal seized the advantage in<br \/>\n    the fifth set with a break to go 4-2 up, but was unable to<br \/>\n    consolidate as Djokovic - against all odds - roared back.\n  <\/p>\n<p>\n    Showing no signs of the fatigue and breathing problems he<br \/>\n    suffered in his near-five-hour, five-set semi-final win over<br \/>\n    Andy Murray on Friday night, Djokovic continued to club winners<br \/>\n    from all parts of the court.\n  <\/p>\n<p>\n    When he finally prevailed, the Serb fell on his back in<br \/>\n    jubilation before ripping his shirt off liked a prized<br \/>\n    heavyweight boxer to celebrate his third Open crown to go with<br \/>\n    his 2008 and 2011 titles.\n  <\/p>\n<p>\n    Djokovic&#039;s fifth career major elevated him above the likes of<br \/>\n    Jim Courier, Guillermo Vilas and Australia&#039;s 1950s legend Lew<br \/>\n    Hoad.\n  <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>View original post here:<br \/>\n<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/news.smh.com.au\/breaking-news-sport\/djokovic-closes-in-on-sporting-immortality-20120130-1qoe1.html\" title=\"Djokovic closes in on sporting immortality\" rel=\"noopener\">Djokovic closes in on sporting immortality<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p> AAP All-conquering world No.1 Novak Djokovic is eyeing sporting immortality after denying Rafael Nadal once again to dramatically defend his Australian Open crown at Melbourne Park.
