\n Gwen O\u2019Mahony, who has failed twice before to win an election
\n in the Chilliwack area, is trying again.\n <\/p>\n
\n The health-care advocate with training in biochemistry and
\n microbiology won the NDP\u2019s nomination in the Chilliwack-Hope
\n riding against Dennis Adamson and Kathleen Stephany on
\n Saturday.\n <\/p>\n
\n \u201cShe\u2019s an excellent candidate and she gave a superb speech,\u201d
\n said BC NDP Leader Adrian Dix after the vote, decided by just
\n 35 out of 84 riding members. \u201cShe raised our (the NDP\u2019s) vote
\n in the last election.\u201d\n <\/p>\n
\n Dix, who gave a speech to the 200 party faithful who gathered
\n for the nomination vote and raised $10,000 for her campaign,
\n noted the NDP hasn\u2019t won before in the riding but said
\n O\u2019Mahony\u2019s running to win.\n <\/p>\n
\n With criminology Prof. John Martin running for the B.C.
\n Conservatives and the Green Party sitting this one out, the
\n by-election will be a three-way race with votes splitting on
\n the right rather than the left.\n <\/p>\n
\n The seat is empty after Liberal Barry Penner resigned in
\n November after representing the riding for four terms.\n <\/p>\n
\n The Liberals have yet to name a candidate.\n <\/p>\n
\n O\u2019Mahony first ran for office in the 2009 B.C. election, losing
\n to Penner in the Chilliwack-Hope riding.\n <\/p>\n
\n And she ran unsuccessfully for the federal NDP in
\n Chilliwack\/Fraser Canyon in last year\u2019s federal election,
\n placing a distant second to Conservative Mark Strahl.\n <\/p>\n
\n She lives in Chilliwack, where she is raising two nieces, and
\n has in past served as president of the Abbotsford Rotaract, a
\n college and career extension of the Rotary Club, and been
\n involved in community environmental issues.\n <\/p>\n
\n Voters will also be asked to go to the polls this year in the
\n Port-Moody Coquitlam riding because Liberal MLA Iain Black also
\n resigned last year.\n <\/p>\n
\n The government has yet to set a date for either by-election.\n <\/p>\n
