{"id":1053080,"date":"2011-04-10T15:49:41","date_gmt":"2011-04-10T15:49:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.immortalitymedicine.tv\/decompression-illness-lancet-review\/"},"modified":"2024-08-17T18:48:00","modified_gmt":"2024-08-17T22:48:00","slug":"decompression-illness-lancet-review","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.euvolution.com\/futurist-transhuman-news-blog\/neurology\/decompression-illness-lancet-review.php","title":{"rendered":"Decompression illness &#8211; Lancet review"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.immortalitymedicine.tv\/wp-content\/plugins\/wp-o-matic\/cache\/19fd1_Diver.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"padding-left:10px; padding-right: 10px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.immortalitymedicine.tv\/wp-content\/plugins\/wp-o-matic\/cache\/19fd1_Diver.png\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\"><\/a>Decompression illness is caused by intravascular or extravascular bubbles that are formed as a result of reduction in environmental pressure (decompression).<\/p><p><b>Types of decompression illness<\/b><\/p><p>The term decompression illness covers <b>2 entities<\/b>:<\/p><p>- <b>arterial gas embolism<\/b>, in which alveolar gas or venous gas <b>emboli<\/b> (via cardiac shunts or via pulmonary vessels) are introduced into the arterial circulation<\/p><p>- <b>decompression sickness<\/b>, which is caused by <b>in-situ<\/b> bubble formation from dissolved inert gas<\/p><p>Both syndromes can occur in divers, compressed air workers, aviators, and astronauts, but arterial gas embolism also arises from iatrogenic causes unrelated to decompression.<\/p><p>Risk of decompression illness is affected by immersion, exercise, and heat or cold.<\/p><p><b>Clinical features of decompression illness<\/b><\/p><p>Manifestations of this condition include a wide range of symptoms and signs:<\/p><div><\/div><div>- itching and minor pain<\/div><div>- neurological symptoms<\/div><div>- cardiac collapse<\/div><div>- death<p><b>Treatment of decompression illness<\/b><\/p><p>First-aid treatment is 100% oxygen. Definitive treatment is recompression to increased pressure, breathing 100% oxygen.<\/p><p>Adjunctive treatments include fluid administration and prophylaxis against venous thromboembolism in paralysed patients.<\/p><p><b>Prognosis of decompression illness<\/b><\/p><p>Treatment is effective in most cases although residual deficits can remain in serious cases, even after several recompressions.<\/p><p>References:<br><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/lancet\/article\/PIIS0140-6736(10)61085-9\/abstract?rss=yes\">Decompression illness<\/a>.
