{"id":1052970,"date":"2010-10-11T10:14:50","date_gmt":"2010-10-11T10:14:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.immortalitymedicine.tv\/metformin-increases-risk-of-vitamin-b-12-deficiency\/"},"modified":"2024-08-17T18:47:13","modified_gmt":"2024-08-17T22:47:13","slug":"metformin-increases-risk-of-vitamin-b-12-deficiency","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.euvolution.com\/futurist-transhuman-news-blog\/neurology\/metformin-increases-risk-of-vitamin-b-12-deficiency.php","title":{"rendered":"Metformin increases risk of vitamin B-12 deficiency"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.immortalitymedicine.tv\/wp-content\/plugins\/wp-o-matic\/cache\/25c5f_200px-Metformin-from-xtal-3D-balls.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"padding-left:10px; padding-right: 10px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.immortalitymedicine.tv\/wp-content\/plugins\/wp-o-matic\/cache\/25c5f_200px-Metformin-from-xtal-3D-balls.png\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\"><\/a>As many as 22% of people with type 2 diabetes could have vitamin B-12 deficiency.<\/p><p>This BMJ study evaluated the effects of metformin on the incidence of vitamin B-12 deficiency (lower than 150 pmol\/l), low concentrations of vitamin B-12 (150-220 pmol\/l), and folate and homocysteine concentrations in patients with type 2 diabetes receiving treatment with insulin.<\/p><p>Compared with placebo, metformin treatment was associated with a decrease in vitamin B-12 concentration of -19%.<\/p><p>The absolute risk of vitamin B-12 deficiency (lower than 150 pmol\/l) at study end was 7.2 percentage points higher in the metformin group than in the placebo group with a number needed to harm of 13.8 per 4.3 years.<\/p><p>Long term treatment with metformin may increase the risk of vitamin B-12 deficiency, which results in raised homocysteine concentrations.
