If metastasis could be blocked many forms of cancer would become tractable and far less threatening, which is a fair-sized step towards a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fightaging.org\/archives\/2007\/01\/to-what-degree-is-a-robust-cancer-cure-sufficent.php\">robust cure for cancer<\/a> - very much needed as a part of any package of biotechnologies aimed at greatly extending healthy human life. Thus it is promising to see signs of early progress along these lines:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i>In laboratory experiments, scientists have eliminated metastasis, the spread of cancer from the original tumor to other parts of the body, in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Melanoma\">melanoma<\/a> by inhibiting a protein known as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22201728\">melanoma differentiation associated gene-9 (mda-9)\/syntenin<\/a>. ... With further research, the approach used by the scientists could lead to targeted therapies that stop metastasis in melanoma and potentially a broad range of additional cancers.<\/p>\n<p>[Researchers]  found that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/15327891\">Raf kinase inhibitor protein (RKIP)<\/a> interacted with and suppressed mda-9\/syntenin. Mda-9\/syntenin [was] shown in previous studies to interact with another protein, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Src_(gene)\">c-Src<\/a>, to start a series of chemical reactions that lead to increased metastasis. ...
