Here, we tested the therapeutic benefits of AFS cells in a rodent model of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ischemia\">ischemic<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stroke\">stroke<\/a>. Adult male <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Laboratory_rat#Sprague_Dawley_rat\">Sprague-Dawley rats<\/a> received a 60-minute <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Middle_cerebral_artery#Occlusion\">middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAo)<\/a>. Thirty-five days later, animals exhibiting significant motor deficits received intravenous transplants of rat AFS cells or vehicle. At days 60-63 post-MCAo, significant recovery of motor and cognitive function was seen in stroke animals transplanted with AFS cells compared to vehicle-infused stroke animals. <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Infarction\">Infarct<\/a> volume [was] significantly reduced, coupled with significant increments in the cell proliferation marker, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ki-67_(protein)\">Ki67<\/a>, and the neuronal marker, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/MAP2\">MAP2<\/a>, in the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dentate_gyrus\">dentate gyrus (DG)<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Subventricular_zone\">subventricular zone (SVZ)<\/a> of AFS cell-transplanted stroke animals compared to vehicle-infused stroke animals. ...
