{"id":1043270,"date":"2011-04-10T15:53:10","date_gmt":"2011-04-10T15:53:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.longevitymedicine.tv\/mitochondria-as-a-therapeutic-target-for-aging-and-neurodegeneration\/"},"modified":"2024-08-17T17:03:23","modified_gmt":"2024-08-17T21:03:23","slug":"mitochondria-as-a-therapeutic-target-for-aging-and-neurodegeneration-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.euvolution.com\/futurist-transhuman-news-blog\/longevity-medicine\/mitochondria-as-a-therapeutic-target-for-aging-and-neurodegeneration-2.php","title":{"rendered":"Mitochondria as a Therapeutic Target for Aging and Neurodegeneration"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It is good to see some of the larger and better funded life science research communities showing interest in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fightaging.org\/archives\/2008\/01\/targeting-mitochondria.php\">targeting mitochondria<\/a> - the more people working on this the better, as <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mitochondrion\">mitochondria<\/a> are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fightaging.org\/archives\/2006\/10\/how-age-damaged-mitochondria-cause-your-cells-to-damage-you.php\">important in degenerative aging<\/a>, but there is presently relatively little ongoing research into <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fightaging.org\/archives\/2010\/08\/taking-a-look-at-mitochondrial-repair-research.php\">the practical approaches to mitochondrial repair<\/a>: \"Mitochondria are <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cytoplasm\">cytoplasmic<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Organelle\">organelles<\/a> responsible for life and death. Extensive evidence from <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Animal_model\">animal models<\/a>, postmortem brain studies of and clinical studies of aging and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Neurodegenerative_disease\">neurodegenerative diseases<\/a> suggests that mitochondrial function is defective in aging and neurodegenerative diseases, such as <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alzheimer's_disease\">Alzheimer's disease<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Parkinson's_disease\">Parkinson's disease<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Huntington's_disease\">Huntington's disease<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Amyotrophic_lateral_sclerosis\">amyotrophic lateral sclerosis<\/a>. Several lines of research suggest that mitochondrial abnormalities, including defects in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Oxidative_phosphorylation\">oxidative phosphorylation<\/a>, increased <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fightaging.org\/archives\/2006\/10\/how-age-damaged-mitochondria-cause-your-cells-to-damage-you.php\">accumulation of mitochondrial DNA defects<\/a>, impaired calcium influx, accumulation of mutant proteins in mitochondria, and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mitochondrion#Outer_membrane\">mitochondrial membrane<\/a> potential dissipation are important cellular changes in both early and late-onset neurodegenerative diseases. Further, emerging evidence suggests that structural changes in mitochondria, including increased mitochondrial fragmentation and decreased <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fightaging.org\/archives\/2006\/04\/merging-mitocho.php\">mitochondrial fusion<\/a>, are critical factors associated with mitochondrial dysfunction and cell death in aging and neurodegenerative diseases. This paper discusses research that elucidates features of mitochondria that are associated with cellular dysfunction in aging and neurodegenerative diseases and discusses mitochondrial structural and functional changes, and abnormal mitochondrial dynamics in neurodegenerative diseases.
