Although the mechanisms of aging are not yet fully understood, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fightaging.org\/archives\/2008\/02\/inflammation-and-the-damage-of-aging.php\">inflammation<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Oxidative_stress\">oxidative damage<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fightaging.org\/archives\/2006\/10\/how-age-damaged-mitochondria-cause-your-cells-to-damage-you.php\">mitochondrial dysfunction<\/a>, functional alterations in specific neuronal circuits and a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fightaging.org\/archives\/2008\/06\/why-do-we-accumulate-senescent-cells-anyway.php\">restricted degree of apoptosis<\/a> are involved. Physical exercise improves the efficiency of the capillary system and increases the oxygen supply to the brain, thus enhancing metabolic activity and oxygen intake in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Neuron\">neurons<\/a>, and increases <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Neurotrophin\">neurotrophin<\/a> levels and resistance to stress. Regular exercise and an active lifestyle during adulthood have been associated with reduced risk and protective effects for mild cognitive impairment and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alzheimer's_disease\">Alzheimer's disease<\/a>. Similarly, studies in animal models show that physical activity has positive physiological and cognitive effects that correlate with changes in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Transcription_(genetics)\">transcriptional profiles<\/a>. According to numerous studies, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Epigenetics\">epigenetic events<\/a> that include changes in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/DNA_methylation\">DNA methylation<\/a> patterns, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Histone\">histone<\/a> modification and alterations in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/MicroRNA\">microRNA<\/a> profiles seem to be a signature of aging.
