Here, researchers suggest that an AGE precursor chemical is also problematic: \"<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Oxidative_stress\">Oxidative stress<\/a> is believed to be a very important factor in causing aging and age-related diseases. Oxidative stress is caused by an imbalance between oxidants such as <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Reactive_oxygen_species\">reactive oxygen species (ROS)<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Antioxidant\">antioxidants<\/a>. ROS are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fightaging.org\/archives\/2006\/10\/how-age-damaged-mitochondria-cause-your-cells-to-damage-you.php\">produced from the mitochondrial electron transport chain<\/a> and many oxidative reactions. <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Methylglyoxal\">Methylglyoxal (MG)<\/a> is a highly reactive dicarbonyl <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Metabolite\">metabolite<\/a> formed during glucose, protein and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fatty_acid_metabolism\">fatty acid metabolism<\/a>. MG levels are elevated in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hyperglycemia\">hyperglycemia<\/a> and other conditions. An excess of MG formation can increase ROS production and cause oxidative stress. MG reacts with proteins, DNA and other biomolecules, and is a major precursor of advanced glycation end products (AGEs). AGEs are also associated with the aging process and age-related diseases such as cardiovascular complications of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Type_2_diabetes\">diabetes<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Neurodegenerative_disease\">neurodegenerative diseases<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Connective_tissue_disease\">connective tissue disorders<\/a>. AGEs also increase oxidative stress. In this review we discuss the potential role of MG in the aging process through increasing oxidative stress besides causing AGEs formation.
