Researchers examined the association between <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Body_mass_index\">Body Mass Index (BMI)<\/a>, waist circumference, waist to hip ratio, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/X-ray_computed_tomography\">CT-based<\/a> measures of abdominal fat, with <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Magnetic_resonance_imaging\">MRI<\/a> measures of total brain volume (TCBV), <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lateral_ventricles\">temporal horn<\/a> volume (THV), <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ucop.edu\/sciencetoday\/article\/16621\">white matter hyperintensity<\/a> volume (WMHV) and brain <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Infarction\">infarcts<\/a> in the middle-aged participants.  ... Our results confirm the inverse association of increasing BMI with lower brain volumes in older adults and with younger, middle-aged adults and extends the findings to a much larger study sample. ... Prior studies were conducted in cohorts with less than 300 participants and the current study includes over 700 individuals. ... More importantly our data suggests a stronger connection between central obesity, particularly the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fightaging.org\/archives\/2008\/03\/lose-the-visceral-fat.php\">visceral fat component<\/a> of abdominal obesity, and risk of dementia and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alzheimer's_disease\">Alzheimer's disease<\/a> ... the association between VAT and TCBV was most robust and was also independent of BMI and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Insulin_resistance\">insulin resistance<\/a>.
