ESTEEMED Frankston doctor Clive Bennetts prescribes two things for longevity: pick the right parents and don\u2019t smoke. <\/p>\n
The Beach St GP - who established his practice in 1962 - is celebrating 50 years of service. <\/p>\n
And the vivacious 76-year-old said he had no plans to retire soon. <\/p>\n
\u201cAs long as your brain is working, you keep up to date with technology and continue medical education, there\u2019s nothing stopping you,\u201d Dr Bennetts said. <\/p>\n
\u201cI promised myself three things: I must be in good health, feel wanted and enjoy my job. <\/p>\n
\u201cThere\u2019s no point doing it any more otherwise.\u201d <\/p>\n
Born in Bendigo and raised in Williamstown, Dr Bennetts spent 15 years in obstetrics, delivering more than 1000 babies. <\/p>\n
\u201cGod has been delivering babies longer than I have; I just sit back and catch them,\u201d he joked. <\/p>\n
But, he said, he always knew his passion was to be a family doctor. <\/p>\n
After graduating from Melbourne University, he began searching for the perfect location to open a practice. <\/p>\n
Enter Frankston. <\/p>\n
\u201cI read an article about AV Jennings opening a sub-division in Karingal and I thought, \u2018That\u2019s where I\u2019ll go\u2019,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n
\u201cI wanted to have a life other than medicine and Frankston was a beautiful little boutique town back in the \u201860s. <\/p>\n
\u201cI didn\u2019t want them to build a shopping centre here, it has lost its charm.\u201d <\/p>\n
A grandfather of six, Dr Bennetts said that despite being disappointed in some of the city\u2019s changes, he loves his town. <\/p>\n
\u201cWe have an excellent locum service and a first-class ambulance service. <\/p>\n
\u201cI also think Frankston Hospital is fantastic.\u201d <\/p>\n
Dr Bennetts will be holding a dinner with friends, family and patients in February to celebrate. <\/p>\n
\u201cDoctors used to say if you take off your tie it means retirement is near. <\/p>\n
\u201cI took my tie off at 65 and I\u2019m not ready to give up yet.\u201d <\/p>\n<\/p>\n
