{"id":1041741,"date":"2010-06-19T08:14:57","date_gmt":"2010-06-19T08:14:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.immortalitymedicine.tv\/novel-immune-cells-kill-cancer\/"},"modified":"2024-08-17T16:51:23","modified_gmt":"2024-08-17T20:51:23","slug":"novel-immune-cells-kill-cancer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.euvolution.com\/futurist-transhuman-news-blog\/longevity-medicine\/novel-immune-cells-kill-cancer.php","title":{"rendered":"Novel Immune Cells Kill Cancer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Via <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eurekalert.org\/pub_releases\/2010-06\/wtsi-mck061010.php\">EurekAlert!<\/a>: &#8220;A team of researchers has developed a method to produce cells that kill tumour cells in the lab and prevent tumours forming in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Animal_model\">mouse models<\/a> of cancer. &#8230; In this research, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/T_cell\">T cells<\/a> were transformed into cells similar to another type, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Natural_killer_cell\">Natural Killer (NK) cells<\/a>, which commonly act against viruses and cancer cells. &#8230; We had shown that a gene called <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/BCL11B\">Bcl11b<\/a> was essential for normal development of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Immune_system\">immune system<\/a> cells &#8211; and of particular interest in the development of T cells. Here we can see the fruits of that work: we show, for the first time, that we can modify the developmental fate of immune system cells to produce a novel type that &#8211; if we can see the same effect in humans &#8211; could be of enormous value in cancer treatment. &#8230; the Bcl11b gene was active only in T cells in the immune system and that its activity was needed at the earliest stages of production of T cells. When the team knocked out the Bcl11b gene, the mice produced no T cells. &#8230; Remarkably, the mice lacking the Bcl11b gene produced a new type of immune system cell &#8211; the Induced T to Natural Killer cells.
