LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) A surgical robot built by a Lincoln company got a glimpse of the stars Tuesday. <\/p>\n
The robot along with other experiments, supplies and equipment was launched into space from Cape Canaveral, Florida. <\/p>\n
Virtual Incision, a startup company based at Nebraska Innovation Campus, created the miniaturized in vivo robotic assistant, also known as MIRA. <\/p>\n
MIRA can perform abdominal surgeries in a minimally invasive manner, officials said. <\/p>\n
Surgeons could also use the technology to perform procedures remotely. <\/p>\n
NASA took an interest in the robot last year. <\/p>\n
The robot is heading to the International Space Station, where it will help test remote surgery tasks. <\/p>\n
Shane Farritor, Virtual Incisions co-founder, said the research will be a huge step toward what he calls telesurgery. <\/p>\n
Well start by having the robot do a little bit by itself, but then later in the mission, were going to try and control it from Lincoln, Farritor said. <\/p>\n
MIRA will collect data for Farritors team before it returns to Earth in the spring. <\/p>\n
