{"id":1027650,"date":"2023-12-11T02:36:43","date_gmt":"2023-12-11T07:36:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.euvolution.com\/futurist-transhuman-news-blog\/uncategorized\/ex-openai-board-member-refuses-to-say-why-she-fired-sam-altman.php"},"modified":"2023-12-11T02:36:43","modified_gmt":"2023-12-11T07:36:43","slug":"ex-openai-board-member-refuses-to-say-why-she-fired-sam-altman","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.euvolution.com\/futurist-transhuman-news-blog\/futurism\/ex-openai-board-member-refuses-to-say-why-she-fired-sam-altman.php","title":{"rendered":"Ex-OpenAI Board Member Refuses to Say Why She Fired Sam Altman"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p><div><img width=\"300\" height=\"158\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-assets.futurism.com\/2023\/12\/openai-board-member-fired-altman-300x158.jpg\" class=\"attachment-medium size-medium wp-post-image\" alt=\"The now-former OpenAI board member who was instrumental in the firing of Sam Altman has spoken &mdash; but she's still staying mum where it matters.\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" style=\"padding-left:10px; padding-right: 10px;\"><\/div><h2>Mum's The Word<\/h2><p>The now-former OpenAI board member who was instrumental in the initial firing of CEO Sam Altman has spoken &mdash; but she's still staying mum on why she pushed him out in the first place.<\/p><p>In an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/tech\/ai\/helen-toner-openai-board-2e4031ef\">interview with the&nbsp;<em>Wall Street Journal<\/em><\/a>, 31-year-old Georgetown machine learning researcher and erstwhile OpenAI board member Helen Toner was fairly open with her responses about the logistics of the <a href=\"https:\/\/futurism.com\/the-byte\/sam-altman-leaving-openai\">failed coup<\/a> at the company, but terse when it came to the <a href=\"https:\/\/futurism.com\/the-byte\/reason-openai-fired-sam-altman\">reasoning behind it<\/a>.<\/p><p>\"Our goal in firing Sam was to strengthen OpenAI and make it more able to achieve its mission,\" the Australian-born researcher said as her only explanation of the headline-grabbing chain of events.<\/p><p>As the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/11\/21\/technology\/openai-altman-board-fight.html\"><em>New York Times<\/em> reported<\/a> in the midst of the <a href=\"https:\/\/futurism.com\/the-byte\/microsoft-openai-drama-name\">Thanksgiving hubbub<\/a>, Toner and Altman butted heads the month prior because she <a href=\"https:\/\/cset.georgetown.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/CSET-Decoding-Intentions.pdf\">published a paper<\/a> critical of the firm's safety protocols (or lack thereof) and laudatory of those undertaken by Anthropic, which was created by former OpenAI employees who <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/tech-policy\/2023\/11\/report-openai-tried-and-failed-to-hire-anthropic-ceo-to-replace-sam-altman\/\">left over similar concerns<\/a>.<\/p><p>Altman reportedly confronted Toner during their meeting and because he believed, per emails viewed by the <em>NYT<\/em>, that \"any amount of criticism from a board member carries a lot of weight.\"<\/p><p>After the tense exchange, the CEO brought his concerns about Toner's criticisms up with other board members, which ended up reinforcing those board members' own doubts about his leadership, the&nbsp;<em>WSJ<\/em> reports.
