NASA news: Incredible Space Station pictures reveal auroras glowing in Earth’s atmosphere – Express.co.uk

Auroras are the direct result of charged particles from the Sun striking our atmosphere at high speeds.

The charged particles or solar winds, excite atoms of oxygen and nitrogen in the air.

When these atoms are hit with solar particles, they gain or drop an energy level by ganging or losing electrons.

As a result of this interaction, the atoms of gas give off colourful photons of light.
