In today's digital age, we have grown increasingly accustomed to understanding the world through fragmented information presented on screens. Rapid developments in transportation, communication, and media have also exacerbated the fracturing and destabilising of society. Zygmunt Bauman used the term "liquid society" to describe the current volatile state of our society. As social structures dissolve, seemingly from solid to liquid, and periodic reforms accelerate to constant change, instability permeates all levels of our lives.

Moreover, global capitalism continues to consume us, labelling materials and things with trademarks and prices to produce commodities. The relationship binding humans to things has become increasingly tenuous, and the ontological status of things are reduced to either pure sensory stimulation or hallucinations on identity. The alienation and commodification of people have also resulted from this. Whether we are rethinking old materialist views of the separation between human and nature, material and consciousness, examining the dynamism of things in the production of relationships, or immersed in the nostalgia for lost objects and skills, it is not enough to merely mend the modern by stitching up ruptures in society due to the relentless expansions of symbols and vantage points. Perhaps a better way is to withdraw from the vortex of fetishisation and to coexist with things through a new methodnamely, the Study of Things. To investigate the phenomena of things in order to understand their nature.

Furthermore, since the beginning of the twenty-first century, the ecological crisis has become increasingly severe and irreversible. The structure of populations, geopolitics, and political economy have all changed drastically. The development of science and technology has left biopolitics and ethics in urgent need of discussion. Therefore, the human being, which has served as the measure all things since the age of Enlightenment, has become increasingly suspect. Our understanding of today's world is challenged. Theories and words have abandoned anthropocentric discourse and turned to matter. Bruno Latour's Actor-Network Theory and American scholar Jane Bennett's Vital Materialism provided the inspiration for the current exhibition. The former holds that both humans and nonhumans are actants, and that the network of connections and interactions between these actants serve as drivers of social and natural development. The latter emphasises that objects have lives and are alive. A They are alive in a non-biological sense, owing to the existence of interaction, entanglement, and action-oriented relationships that form open variables among things. At the same time, things have acquired political significance, not simply to conjure material contexts or material ends to political subjects, but to participate in the political process as active subjects akin to people.

Art as an activity of production maintains a strong interest in materials. It also faces a posthuman dilemma under the dual pressures of technological acceleration and global neoliberalism. Resuming the discussion of material and materiality under the wave of material turns across disciplines and geographic restrictions, what kind of revelation can we bring to the artist's work and practice beyond thought and theory? What cognitive perspectives appear when we no longer look at a specific thing in isolation, but place it in a dynamic network of relationships?

Proceeding from this, the exhibition will return to the intersection of material and imagination, gathering eleven artists' fetishistic longings and thoughts on the Study of Things. They focus on things that are within our reach, tracking their vitality and materiality, and follow the flow of things that transgress borders of time, history, and nationstate. Here, the flow of things is the process of their discovery, mining, production, distribution, and consumption; it can also be regarded as the flow of transregional society and culture, even that of the geological age. After examining an object's symbolic meaning, we go back to the formation process of its value. We question the current value system: How does the active nature of material function as a resource shaping behavioural tendencies in the development of modern humanity? Behind the trajectory of these things, how do we gain insight into the more complex social mechanisms, power structures, interests, and the cause and effect of internal power relations present in objects?

We attempt to stage things as the protagonist to tell a series of stories that are parallel and intertwined.

Allen Iverson: NBA’s greatest of all time is LeBron James, not Jordan – Insider – INSIDER

Another league legend has weighed in on the contentious NBA greatest of all time or GOAT debate.

Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Famer and 11-time NBA All-Star Allen Iverson is riding with Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James as the best player in the history of professional basketball.

In an interview on the Fat Joe show, The Answer said that as much as he loves Michael Jordan, he views Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James as "the one."

"As much as I love Michael Jordan, man, LeBron James is the one," Iverson said. "He's the one, man. That motherf----- is the one."

A.I. is well-positioned to make a call between Jordan and James both of whom are universally regarded as two of the best players the NBA has ever seen after playing against both throughout his illustrious 17-year career. He faced Jordan 13 times between 1997 and 2003 the years in which their careers overlapped and recorded six wins. In the latter half of his time in the NBA, Iverson played against James 18 times and owned a 10-8 record.

Iverson is not the first NBA icon to pick LeBron over Jordan in the age-old GOAT debate. Late last year, Magic legendary Los Angeles Lakers point guard Magic Johnson said James will probably be "the greatest that's ever played"if he wins a few more championships.

"For him to really catch Michael, it's that next two or three championships," Johnson said at the 29th Annual Achilles Gala in New York City. "If he could get a couple more championships, then he'll be probably the greatest that's ever played."

James is currently in the midst of his 17th year in the NBA, and the four-time NBA MVP is"playing as well as I've ever seen him play," according to Johnson. He, Anthony Davis, and the rest of the 2019-2020 Lakers clinched first place in the Western Conference with a 51-15 record, good for second-best in the league. James will pursue his fourth career NBA championship his first with the purple and gold from the NBA bubble in Orlando, Florida.

Inspired by Kobe and Jordan, Von vows to lead differently – The Denver Channel

DENVER -- Through reflection, Von Miller found motivation.

To understand his path of discovery, you have to first go the Pro Bowl on Jan. 26 at Camping World Stadium in Orlando, Fla., before it became a bubble sanctuary for professional sports. Miller prepared for another enjoyable game, smiling, laughing, rushing, while not worrying about tackling.

Then the news clobbered the players. Kobe Bryant was dead at age 41, perishing in a helicopter accident in southern California.

"It kind of struck me hard. That started it for me," Miller said. "It was hard to believe it was real."

The fragility of life on his mind, Miller tested positive for COVID-19. It scared him, and affected his lifestyle. With the pandemic gripping the country and Miller recovering, there were no trips to the Kentucky Derby and Coachella, no filming of commercials.

"I really just thought about what can I do with all of this time? Man, I am going to train everyday as much as I possibly can. That's what I did," Miller said. "I kind of got lost in that."

His body changing physically -- he has added muscle in his upper body -- his mental focus followed after watching "The Last Dance" documentary on the Chicago Bulls and Michael Jordan. It forced a personal audit of last season, and Miller was not satisfied with the numbers.

"I asked myself, 'Hey, Michael Jordan was the best that ever played. Was I really making that commitment to the game? Was I really doing the same stuff he did?" Miller said Tuesday. "Kobe was one of the best to ever play. Was I doing the same things that Kobe was doing? Was I demanding more out of my teammates? Was I demanding more out of myself? I looked in the mirror, and I said I wasn't. I have just tried to change that."

It is a startling epiphany for a player entering his 10th season. At 31, years old, Miller boasts the type of resume that will land him in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. When you are as good as him, seasons are measured in All-Pro honors and Super Bowl berths. Neither came last year as the Broncos suffered their third straight losing season for the first time since drought of 1963-72. Miller finished with eight sacks, his lowest total since 2013.

Broncos coach Vic Fangio mentioned last week that Miller was "hungrier" than in years past.

Miller's offseason provided a road map to his goals. Von read Bryant's book, "The Mamba Mentality: How I Play." He dissected Jordan's relentlessness.

"They would never ask their teammates to do something they wouldn't do themselves," Miller said. "I want my teammates to say things about me that they said about them."

These are legacy players who possessed the type of drive that danced between unhealthy and obsession. Miller has rolled up his sleeves in the past, his Quadzilla legs a testament to his training. But he's never dug deep into his own psyche or his way of interacting with teammates. Miller has always acted as caulking in the locker room, connecting guys at all positions with his outgoing personality.

This sits in juxtaposition to Kobe and Jordan, who were not remembered for making friends and keeping peace.

I asked Von if it was realistic to believe he could lead in this fashion, challenging players until they are uncomfortable.

"I might be 31 years old and year 10, but it's never too late to change. I have identified the leader I was before wasn't getting it done. It wasn't leading us to the right direction where we needed to be fast enough," Miller said. "I have to change, I have to demand more out of my teammates. But at the same time, I have to love on my teammates and let them know I appreciate them."

Therein lies the balance. Demanding respect while not losing yourself. Miller plans to talk with DeMarcus Ware and Peyton Manning, seeking advice. This is a crossroads season for Von, who has a club option for 2021, the last season of the contract he signed following his Super Bowl 50 MVP performance.

"I felt like I was a great leader before, but I shied away from being the No. 1 leader. Pressure is privilege," Miller said, explaining how his position has evolved. "To have that pressure to lead us to dominance, to lead us to Super Bowls, I want that pressure."

49ers free agency: 49ers are expected to sign pass rusher Dion Jordan – Niners Nation

Kyles update, 9:50 a.m.: Its official

The San Francisco 49ers today announced they had signed DL Dion Jordan to a one-year deal.

The Miami Dolphins originally drafted Jordan (6-6, 275) in the first round (third overall) of the 2013 NFL Draft. Throughout his seven-year career with Miami (2013-16), the Seattle Seahawks (2017-18) and Oakland Raiders (2019), he has appeared in 50 games (four starts) and registered 82 tackles, 10.5 sacks, two forced fumbles, and five passes defended. Last season with Oakland, he appeared in seven games and finished with five tackles, 2.0 sacks, and one pass defensed.

A 30-year-old native of Chandler, AZ, Jordan spent five years (2008-12) at the University of Oregon. He appeared in 45 games (25 starts) at Oregon, where he transitioned from tight end to defensive end and finished his career with 121 tackles, 14.5 sacks, four forced fumbles, and two passes defended. As a senior in 2012, Jordan made 12 starts and registered 44 tackles, 5.0 sacks, three forced fumbles, and one pass defensed while earning First-Team All-Pac-12 honors.

On Tuesday, the San Francisco 49ers hosted two pass rushers. One, Ziggy Ansah, was familiar with defensive line coach Kris Kocurek. Usually, fans will want to sign the bigger name. The other pass rusher, Dion Jordan, was more productive in 2019 on a smaller sample size. Wednesday morning, NFL Networks Ian Rapoport reported that the San Francisco 49ers are expected to sign Jordan, who finished with a couple of sacks last season and 13 pressures on 125 snaps. Jordans pass-rush productivity was 7.1 compared to Ansahs 4.8. Jordan ranked 45th out of 123 edge rushers in PFFs PRP rating.

After Nick Bosa, Arik Armstead, and Dee Ford, the 49ers didnt have any established pass rushers behind the trio. The production fell off a cliff once both Ronald Blair and Damontre Moore went down with season-ending injuries last season, so bringing in someone who has experience in the league and as a productive pass rusher made sense for San Francisco. Id expect Jordan to play more than 145 snaps, the amount he played with the Raiders last season, in 2019. The team will want to monitor Fords snap count as the season goes along to ensure hes healthy for the playoffs. With Blair on the PUP list, there was no reliable threat to get after the quarterback that was on the bench. Jordan is a quality depth signing. The Athletics Dave Lombardi tweeted that the 49ers dropped one sack per game without Blair or Moore available in 2019. Thats significant and gives the Niners even more of a reason to bring in someone with experience.

Jordan has battled some personal demons. As recently as last year, Jordan had to sit out 10 games for violating the PED policy. Jordan took Adderalla drug he was previously approved forbut admitted that his most recent suspension was different than his first three. Jordan, who has been sober for three years, also said his injury history is a thing of the past as well in the article. Hes 66, 273 pounds with eight percent body fat. This could turn out to be one of those low-risk, high reward depth signings that look great in a few months.

Air Jordan 14 Black/Particle Grey Is Scheduled To Arrive In Summer 2021 – Sneaker News

Before officially launching in a new Royal colorway next month, the Air Jordan 14 is already thinking about its plans of action for the year 2021. Approximately one year from now in the Summertime, the Tinker-designed silhouette will deliver a brand new colorway that mingles together that of both neutral and multi-colored elements.

Based off of this mock-up by @zsneakerheadz, it appears that a majority of its look will be dependent on darker bases that integrate Particle Grey bases with stark black overlays along the rear and forefoot. The mid-foot plate is where the multi-toned accents could be present, perhaps offering a shimmery iridescent look and feel similar to that of the Doernbecher 14s from 2019. Are there too many red herrings in the ‘Perry Mason’ reboot? – TimesLIVE

The beloved pop-culture character returns to our screens, but this time he's a conflicted private eye rather than an eagle-eyed attorney

09 August 2020 - 00:00 By

Perry Mason has had an enviably long life as a character in US popular culture since being introduced to the world in the novels of Erle Stanley Gardner in the 1930s. A criminal defence lawyer with a knack for proving the innocence of his clients by implicating the real culprits, Mason went on to feature first as the star of a popular radio drama and then in the 1950s as a television stalwart, in one of the US's longest-running TV dramas.

The titular character was played by Raymond Burr in the show, and then in a short-lived 1970s reboot and a series of 30 television films that he starred in before his death in 1993...

Black Lives Matter Co-Founders: Marxist, Radical and Soros …

In a previous article, we examined the origins of Black Lives Matter and how the movement ties into Liberation Theology and Black Liberation Theology.

In the earlier article, it was noted that the three women who take credit for starting Black Lives Matter openly state that this movement is about reviving Black Liberation Theology. We also examined how Black Lives Matter has inserted their own platform of elevating illegal aliens, black women and in particular gay and transgender blacks.

The founders of a hashtag that set a country on fire are Alicia Garza, Opal Tometi, and Patrisse Cullors. But who are these women and what do they stand for?

Three Co-Founders of Black Lives Matter movement, Opal Tometi (Left) Alicia Garza (Center) and Patrisse Cullors (Right). Photo courtesy of Patrisse Cullors website under fair use.

These three women who founded Black Lives Matter are not your average Americans. All of them are radicals of varying degrees, all three share a Marxist ideology and all three appear to be taking their hashtag and their activism to the bank.

About Alicia Garza

Alicia Garza was born in 1981 and currently resides in Oakland, California and has described herself as a queer Social Justice activist and an editorial writer. One of her heroes is Assata Shakur. Garza lauds Shakurs contributions to the Black Liberation Movement.

For those unfamiliar with that name, Shakur is a Marxist revolutionary, a member of the Black Liberation Army, and a former Black Panther. In 1972, Shakur and an associate shot and killed a New Jersey State Trooper and injured another. In 1977, Shakur was convicted of seven felonies, including the murder of the State Trooper. In 1979, Shakur escaped prison and fled to Cuba in 1984, where she sought political asylum. New Jersey Governor Chris Christie called for her extradition earlier in 2016.

Garzas view is that Black Lives Matter is about reviving the Black Liberation Movement and subsequent theology. Garza sees Black Lives Matter as a vehicle for the promotion of Black queer and trans folks. Garzas rationale is that these groups, bear a unique burden in a hetero-patriarchal society that disposes of us like garbage and simultaneously fetishizes us and profits off of us.

Speaking of profits, Garza directs the Special Project at the National Domestic Workers Alliance, which is a coalition of, nannies, housekeepers and care workers. This organization is a 501(c)3 which has received over $50,000 from George Soros Tides Foundation, who has also been a major funding source for Black Lives Matter. The group received $10,000 in 2013 and $40,804 in 2014.

Garza is also noted to be the on the Board for People Organized to Win Employment Rights (POWER), a Board member of the School of Unity and Liberation (SOUL) and she was the Board Chair in 2011 for the Right to the City Alliance (RTCA). All of these organizations are well-funded and appear have over-lapping partnerships, funding sources, and alliances.

About Opal Tometi

Born in 1984 and raised in Phoenix, Arizona, Opal Tometi is the daughter of two Nigerian immigrants who are alleged to have entered the United States illegally. She attended the University of Arizona, where she graduated with a BA in history and an MA in communications & advocacy. Tometi now resides in Brooklyn, New York. While her two other co-founding partners are gay, Tometi is straight.

Tometi currently is the Executive Director a Black Alliance for Just Immigration (BAJI), which is a 501(c)3 non-profit based in Oakland, California. Tometi has been involved with BAJI since 2011. Tometis bio at BAJI says she is a Black feminist writer, communications strategist and cultural organizer.

BAJI is a documented front group for the socialist and Marxist-Leninist group, the Freedom Road Socialist Organization (FRSO).

BAJI has received funding from George Soros Tides Foundation and from NEO Philanthropy, a Left-leaning group whose mission is, to increase funding for cutting-edge strategies that advance social change.

Supplementing her role at BAJI, Tometi is also involved with a network called Black Organizing for Leadership and Dignity (BOLD). This organization primarily teaches black activists how to build a social justice infrastructure. and organize black communities more effectively.

BOLD appears to be aligned with The Praxis Project, which is a, a nonprofit movement support intermediary that helps to build power in communities to improve health justice across the United States. According to 2013 IRS filings, The Praxis Project pulled in $2,175,451 in total revenue with only just over $67,000 of that being from grants.

Tometi has a local connection to North Carolina. She serves at BOLD with Durham Black Lives Matter organizers and former Durham School Board member, Sendolo Diaminah. Diaminah resigned from the Durham School Board earlier this year after missing more than two-thirds of the meetings due to his activist roles and travel.

Tometi is also a board member of the Puente Human Rights Movement, a group whose main purpose appears to be opposing any efforts that might stagnate the flow of illegal immigrants into the country.

Formed in 2007, the Puente Human Rights Movement website stated that, Our membership and leadership has always been comprised of those most impacted by anti-immigrant policies and laws: currently and formerly undocumented people, those in mixed-status families, and people of color affected by rampant racial profiling.

About Patrisse Cullors

Cullors was born in Los Angeles, California in 1984 describes herself on her website as an artist, organizer, and freedom fighter and also a self-described wife of Harriet Tubman. She holds a degree in Philosophy and Religion from UCLA and was a Fulbright Scholar. Cullors also says she is a performance artist.

Cullors is also extremelypro-Palestine, signing the 2015 Black Solidarity Statement with Palestine, which portrayed Palestine as a victim while demonizing any actions taken by Israel and likened the detention of Palestinians to the incarceration of blacks in the United States. Cullors also traveled toPalestine under the Black Lives Matter banner to meeting in solidarity with those that Cullors says are under occupation by Israel.

Patrisse Cullors and BLM members in Nazareth. Courtesy of Patrisse Cullors website under fair use.

Cullors is gay and in an MSNBC documentary recounted a story of leaving her home at the age of sixteen when she came out to her family. Cullors repeats this information on her website as well as a long list of awards, grants, and accomplishments such as being named a Civil Rights Leader for the 21st Century by the Los Angeles Times.

Cullors activism and organizing began in her late teens when she joined the Bus Riders Union, a transportation advocacy group that claims to ride the bus is a human right. The Bus Riders Union still exists and is run by the Labor /Community Strategies Center.

Cullors has the distinction of being trained as an activist by Eric Mann of the domestic terrorist group, Weather Underground Organization which bombed a building in Greenwich, NY, the U.S. Capitol building, The U.S. State Department building and the Pentagon during the late 1960s and early 1970s. Mann also runs the Labor/ Community Strategies Center.

Sometime in or around 2012, Cullors formed a group called Dignity and Power Now (DPN). Their website states DPN is a grassroots organization based in Los Angeles that fights for the dignity and power of incarcerated people, their families, and communities. Cullors has made statements over time that show her main driver is the decriminalization of black lives.

DPN, like BAJI, is also a front group for the Freedom Road Socialist Organization (FRSO). DPNs website says they are a Community Partners Project, which is a 501(c)3 with over $35 million in assets. Community Partners basically acts as a business manager for non-profit organizations and handles donations and grants. Its an easy and legal way for outfits like DPN to obscure their donation levels from the public.

This has been a basic overview of these women, with key points about who they are and what drives them.

All three of these women work for groups that are fronts for The Freedom Road Socialist Organization, one of the largest radical Left organizations in the country. In fact,it is this organization that likely guides Black Lives Matter as evidenced byinserting itselfinto the situation in Ferguson.

Now that weve explored Black Lives Matter on a national level, its time to zoom in on the local level. The Freedom Road Socialist Organization needs more exploring, however, as well as some of itslocal Tar Heel state connections.

Black Lives Matter group offers rural people ‘insight into prejudice’ – The Guardian

Black Lives Matter activists have launched a toolkit designed to help rural communities across the UK to fight racism in their local area.

Their campaign, BLM in the Stix, is aimed at building on the momentum of June and July, when more than 260 towns and cities held anti-racism protests, from Monmouth in south Wales to Shetland in Scotland. It offers rural communities support to take a stand against racism at a local level.

The online toolkit was launched on Saturday with a protest along the banks of the River Colne in Essex.

This toolkit is about getting people who are not racist to become anti-racist, especially for people who live in rural areas who might be thinking we dont have that much racism around here, said Gurpreet Sidhu, founder of the Wivenhoe Black Lives Matter group and co-organiser of the protest.

Racism is everywhere and there are people in your community who often suffer in silence.

The toolkit, developed by Wivenhoe BLM supporters with help from Stand up to Racism Colchester and the Local Equality Commission, provides resources on how to start a campaign in a rural setting, describing some of the key challenges as well as ways to overcome this. It is targeted at white people in rural areas who want to stand up against racism but might not know where to start.

It includes information on how to hold a protest, run educational events and create action plans.

Having organised a BLM demonstration in rural Gloucestershire during the pandemic, Khady Gueye, from the Forest of Dean, was able to support Sidhu in creating a resource for people to share experiences and ask questions.

In rural areas like mine, there is this idea that we dont need things like this because there isnt a big ethnic minority population, but there is a lot of covert racism, she said.

People need a platform to share their experiences of racism and prejudice in these areas, where youre in a much more extreme minority than in bigger cities, and people who dont really understand need a place to start in trying to engage with and tackle these problems.

Gueye, 24, said having an open dialogue and sharing resources help to create change. Especially in places where theres little to no exposure to people of different ethnicities and cultures, people need a platform where they can ask questions, have those difficult conversations, and be pointed towards books, articles, films, podcasts whatever it is to give them an insight into racial injustice and prejudice. They need somewhere to begin.

Black Lives Matter: Making sense of the hashtag, movement and protests – Deseret News

SALT LAKE CITY The Black Lives Matter movement has drawn tens of millions into the streets to participate in protests taking place every day since May. The #BlackLivesMatter hashtag has been used by millions of social media users to call attention to cases of police brutality since 2013, and hundreds of groups bearing the name have materialized in nearly every major city in the United States. But if you look for a headquarters, a national spokesperson or a unified mission for the cause, you wont find anything.

The decentralized nature of Black Lives Matter has caused confusion over what it actually stands for, said Stefahn Rich, 30, the owner of Stefs Place, a barbershop in Salt Lake City.

Theres this misconception that its a particular organization, said Rich. Or, it gets portrayed as a cause of a small group of people, when its all of these communities, all of these people and organizations fighting together.

Customers at Stefs Place who donate $100 to Black Lives Matter receive a $150 gift card to use toward haircuts, shaves and other services. But since there is no centralized Black Lives Matter organization, Rich lets patrons choose between three institutions that accept donations: Utahs chapter of the ACLU, the NAACP legal defense fund and Campaign Zero, a nonprofit dedicated to ending police violence.

To me, it means they support the movement that Black lives actually do matter and they are very much endangered and threatened, not just by police and government, but every day by people around them, said Rich.

Some recoil from Black Lives Matter because Patrisse Cullors, one of the women credited with starting the movement, described herself and her co-founders as trained Marxists. Others are apprehensive about the stance on the family held by one of the most visible organizations, the Black Lives Matter Global Network. Their website, BlackLivesMatter.com, says they are queer-affirming and seek to disrupt the Western-prescribed nuclear family structure requirement. Still others think they cant say they support Black Lives Matter unless they agree with abolishing the police.

But according to Alvin Tillery, professor of political science and director of the Center for the Study of Diversity and Democracy at Northwestern University, none of these ideas are foundational to the movement as a whole. With hundreds of locally organized groups, the movement does not have a singular identity, and there are no solutions to discrimination and policing that everyone agrees on, he said.

That fractured nature can make it difficult for media to represent the movement in an authentic way. While journalists tend to look for a spokesperson, a website and a number to contact, many of the grassroots groups organizing demonstrations have none of the above.

The fact that the movement has no leader could ultimately be its downfall, said Tillery. But in many ways, its a strength. Because there is no centralized leadership, there is a place within the movement for everyone who believes there is a problem with race and policing no matter their own race, age or political party, Tillery said.

If you support Black Lives Matter, it means you understand theres a need for police reform, that you recognize there are systemic inequalities around race, and you support any range of solutions, from diversity training, to defunding, to abolition.

Three women, Alicia Garza, Opal Tometi and Patrisse Cullors, are responsible for coining the phrase Black Lives Matter and mobilizing demonstrators following the 2013 acquittal of the man who killed Trayvon Martin. According to USA Today, Cullors created the #BlackLivesMatter hashtag after Garza first used the phrase in a Facebook post.

The hashtag has been instrumental in raising awareness and spreading information, said Simon Howard, a professor of psychology at Marquette University in Milwaukee who specializes in prejudice and discrimination.

Its basically cyberactivism. Everyone can play a role because not everyone feels comfortable protesting or being in the streets, said Howard. Its not the end all, but we see how monumental it is when people all over the world are tweeting #BlackLivesMatter and protesting anti-Black police violence in counties like South Africa and France.

Cullors and her co-founders wanted the movement to be decentralized so that people would be motivated to step up locally to fight for change in their own communities, Howard said. But the lack of formal structure makes it difficult to find reliable information about the movement as a whole because each community leader may have a different point of view.

BlackLivesMatter.org is a WordPress site with links to a handful of articles and a couple tweets. Many news sources reference BlackLivesMatter.com, the website for a group called the Black Lives Matter Global Network, which is not a formal nonprofit. Registered 501(c)(3) Thousand Currents partners with the organization to provide the legal and administrative framework to enable BLM to fulfill its mission, according to its website.

The Black Lives Matter Global Network did not respond to the Deseret News requests for comment.

While the Black Lives Matter Global Network has 16 affiliate chapters in cities such as Boston, Chicago and Los Angeles, there are hundreds of other local Black Lives Matters groups across the country that dont associate with the network, including several Utah-based Black Lives Matter chapters.

The leaders of several Black Lives Matter groups in Utah say they are frustrated that most people assume there is a single organization. While Lex Scott, the founder of Black Lives Matter Utah, works closely with the leaders of Northern Utah and Southern Utah chapters, a different group called Black Lives Matter Salt Lake City has separated themselves from Scott and the events she leads.

Ashley Finley, one of the founding members of Black Lives Matter Salt Lake City, said she used to organize with Scotts group, but she saw a need in the community for a chapter that would call for the eventual abolition of police as well as focus more on queer and trans-affirming work. She and her fellow organizers started the group in June and their Instagram page already has more than 12,000 followers. However, Finley said the main thing that distinguishes her group from others in Utah is that they intend to join the Global Network.

Blackness is not a monolith, neither is activism, said Finley. If one group doesnt fit your personal ideals, there are many different groups you can explore.

Scott said she doesnt want to bash the Global Network. She acknowledges they have done good things, but she doesnt think she should have to report to their authority.

I feel more comfortable running independently because I have control over what our chapter does, said Scott, who made it clear that her group has no political affiliations, is not involved in advocacy related to family structures and does not promote any kind of economic theory, such as Marxism.

We may have some different ideals that dont necessarily match with them. That doesnt make them bad people, but we have some different ideologies.

Jacarri Kelley, who lives in Roy, runs the Northern Utah chapter of Black Lives Matter and does not affiliate with the Global Network either. Kelley said there is a lot of confusion about the name, but she has chosen to stick with it because the message of Black Lives Matter is powerful.

I cant stand how people are using the movement now, how theyre using Black Lives Matter when they are looting or destroying public property, said Kelley. At the end of the day, we shouldnt have to change the name. For Black people, its empowering. Whenever I have a youth event and they say, Black Lives Matter, just seeing the pride in their eyes, thats what I live for.

Howard believes that misconceptions about the movement ultimately stem from a lack of information.

People are fearful of Black Lives Matter, largely because of the word Black, said Howard. In an American context, the word Black typically has a negative connotation, like when someone says Black music or Black neighborhoods, Howard said.

If Im ignorant, if I dont know or have knowledge about a particular person or organization, whats filling those gaps is the negative stereotypes associated with blackness, said Howard.

The Black Lives Matter Foundation, created by R. Ray Barnes, a 67-year-old music producer who lives in Santa Clarita, California, has been another flashpoint for controversy surrounding the Black Lives Matter name. Barnes started the foundation 2015, after his wifes ex-husband was killed by Los Angeles police. He said that the foundation has raised a few hundred thousand dollars over the past five years, and its main activity has been supporting and telling the stories of Black veterans through the Peaceful Warriors Foundation. Recently, Barnes independent foundation has made headlines because corporate donors have allegedly confused it with the Black Lives Matter Global Network, which also calls itself Black Lives Matter Foundation, Inc. on its website, even though Barnes owns all URLs related to the name.

Barnes said he is cooperating with the Charitable Trust of California on an investigation to sort out discrepancies. In addition, Barnes said he has received cease and desist orders from the states of New York and Florida, despite his claims that he has never solicited donations in those states.

Its a whole lot of confusion, said Barnes.

While Barnes said the ultimate goal for his foundation is to help create unity between the police and the community, he has no connection with any other Black Lives Matter groups. He does not organize marches, and he does not agree with defunding the police. While he expressed frustration over the confusion between his organization and others, he said there is not necessarily any animosity between them.

To be in a feud, you have to be in touch with someone. Ive never spoken with anyone from those organizations, said Barnes.

Tillery said splintering is normal in a movement. Black Lives Matter can be compared to other social movements seen in the U.S. and Europe since the 1980s, like the Green Power movement and Occupy Wall Street, which also had a horizontal membership and leadership structure, he said. These movements stand in contrast to the African American civil rights movement, which was led by people like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Without a central figure who can act as a strong negotiator, its hard to create lasting change on a national level, Tillery said.

Im worried that were going to have this mass wave of protests and a lot of people who want to make reforms, but no one with the moral authority to carry this movement to victory, said Tillery. Theres all of these steps beyond getting people to go and march and demand the arrest of officers, and it doesnt seem like BLM has that stuff figured out. And thats very consistent with other movements.

At the same time, Tillery is impressed by the sheer number of people, especially millennials and members of Generation Z, that the Black Lives Matter movement has mobilized.

This is an exciting time in America, said Tillery. Theres tremendous opportunity, but movements are messy.

Rich agrees that this is an exciting time for the country. He says his barbershop is a place of community and conversation, and over the past few months, hes had many opportunities to discuss racial issues with his customers.

Theres not really a cut and dry way around it. People just need to keep fighting, keep their foot on the gas said Rich. Everybody has a different opinion and different outcomes that they would like to see, but I dont think that that detracts from the movement.

American Catholics and the Black Lives Matter Movement – The New York Times

Someone argues gun rights are important. You know everybody gets one single bolt action rifle. Now you go hard to reload. Cant do a whole lot of damage with that, unless youre very well trained. Nobody gets handguns semiautomatic weapons, et cetera, et cetera. We make that deal down. People need to be able to deal with vermin I suppose in rural areas. But obviously, we have a problem too. The countries have with guns indeed feral hogs. They surround your kids. The only thing the Catholic church concerned with is the communist pope that it has. Other than that buddy I wish we had a communist pope shouldnt we disarm the police before we disarm ourselves or with those happen at the same time, you know I mean, the police should definitely need your help. So for instance, the Dallas cops who used a bomb removal robot to actually carry a bomb to a wounded criminal who was lying in a parking garage bleeding to death and then blew him up despite the fact that he was shortly going to be unconscious from blood loss. I mean, I dont think cops should have execution robots right. I think that there are some squads that obviously need to be armed. Thats how it is in the UK in the UK when you would see cops dealing with like you know bicycle altercations as I saw outside my house one time. They usually werent like pulling guns on people. They didnt have guns on them. Indeed They were dealing with bicycle altercations. So you know, I think that you can make those kinds of distinctions. Does the Roman Catholic church have any Im sorry. And is that thoughts on the accusations by moralist catholics that we shouldnt support Black Lives Matter because its marxist. I never know what people mean when they say marxist. I think probably a good 50% of people who have marxist in their Twitter bios dont know what they mean when they say theyre marxist. The term has become so vast its called calm says concept creep. Right critique drift. I have no idea what people mean when they say its Marx as they say its atheistic. I would say this at the March for Life there are atheists there are atheists who come for the March for Life and make a big deal of being atheists and catholics embrace them. There are Mormons at the March for Life. Right There are evangelicals at the March for Life. There are all kinds of people at the March for Life and the catholics. They have no problem with it because theyre like, look, this is a cause right. And the cause is this particular thing were focusing on here. So if you can link arms with people who are secular or people of different faiths for a cause which it seems we can because it happens every year in January at the March for Life then I dont understand why you cant at least identify that this organization, whatever else its intentions or its agenda is the agenda that you know, police should not be killing black people. You know in the street ally George Floyd Orlando Castile and I think you know you can agree on that. And that can be an issue of shared advocacy. Its not just me. This has this has come up again and again from officials in in the church right. This is actually the view of the hierarchy itself. So if you go and read the letter that we have posted on Catholic social action a letter to all of the United States bishops you can see all of the church figures who we have quoted in favor of this very idea. Right So you know go check it out. Go to Catholic social action see whats up. Im not asking you to affirm everything that every organization that is involved in this effort believes. Im just asking you to affirm this one thing. And I think we can reasonably do that. Yeah police are not allowed to execute criminals. Thats where I kind of disagree with rod Dreher a little bit is just because youre resisting arrest doesnt mean the police can execute. You on the spot. Normally we have a trial for that kind of thing. And we put people to death with you know Chinese horse tranquilizers instead of shooting them in the back of the head or whatever crushing their necks and says, how we do things around here arent trials overrated. I mean trials have problems you know. But I think that, you know in absence of a better solution youve got to render the punishment after the trial would be my perspective. And I dont think thats too crazy. I like Coke. I dont know why people in Texas. Usually like Dr. pepper. Its not bad. Ill drink it. But I also call every brown soda Coke. Do you think the left has a problem with tactical unity with other culture factions. Yes well Space Jam to be good while space down line was pretty good. I really, really like Space Jam. Ill still watch Space Jam. Have I ever tried meditation. Yes, I do every day. Yeah dude, what the hell is up with that Dreyer post. That guy was practically salivating for death. I would recommend reading Alan Jacobs response on his blog. Snakes and ladders a.j. he had a very good kind of you know temperate but I think reasonably alarmed response and you know since then rudd has done a few edits where he expands on you know feeling a little less comfortable with what he originally said than he did at the time. Any words of wisdom on this anniversary of the atomic bombing. Yeah, it was a sin and a crime. All right incinerating thousands and thousands of innocent civilians and also poisoning the ground and many, many people who survived including unborn children in such a way that they would be disabled and maimed for the rest of their lives in the very earth itself would be poisonous. Seems like something thats pretty diabolical in nature. I did see a guy on Twitter yesterday say that the atomic bombs arent real that it was just like a fake like we used conventional bombs in Hiroshima and Nagasaki and somehow faked everyone out into believing we had nukes and then everyone else also started pretending to have nukes. Thats a conspiracy theory thats obviously wrong, but its one Im going to dig deeper into because its kind of amusing and considering the existence of actual nuclear weapons is extraordinarily disturbing. I am a nuclear weapon abolitionist very much in favor of disarmament. Check out the documentary countdown to zero. Very much very much in favor of that. I saw it twice in theaters. Do you believe that the Cardinals only elected Francis because they expected him to die soon. Possibly there is this great verse in Jeremiah the heart is deceitful above all things and wicked beyond compare who can understand it. This is like triply true for Catholic Cardinals. Lets see how can a formal religious organization. So closely tied to imperialism be liberator free. Well hope springs eternal right. There is such a thing as liberation theology where the colonized peoples of Latin America who had been evangelized and converted to Catholicism by those very Spanish missionaries who showed up centuries before use that same theology to argue for their own liberation. America, of course violently suppressed a lot of that revolutionary activity and the church itself came out against it at the time. Pope Francis has been warmer to liberation theology and liberation theologians than other popes. And I think with good reason for one he is from Latin America. And so hes seen it on the ground. But obviously, I strongly support that approach. And I do think that this is a fundamentally laboratory faith. Liz can you address the fact that Matt looks exactly like Martin Luther cant say that I have ever noticed that you have to think about that to get in one of those like strange kind of early modern hats and to take a look. Will my toddler be going to school this year. Its not up to me now Ill listen to the local authorities. Do you think that more black people than what is publicized or victimized by police on the daily. I mean, probably right. I gather thats something that lots of black people deal with. I mean, you know if theyre not reporting it, then we dont have statistics. So I wouldnt doubt it. What are you working on these days. Oh, you know this and that. And the other. Im going to have a couple pieces. God willing about the conventions as they happen later this month. Do I like writing books. No, there are too long. I am sure that one day I will do that. But yes you should keep reading Gustavo the person who is asking about liberation theology. Are you moving to Texas perhaps. How are you, Elizabeth. Have you had your coffee yet. Well, because I think I grew up in an extremely hot climate in Texas. I dont drink coffee. I dont drink any hot drinks actually when I get up in the morning for my shot of caffeine I have an icy cold Coca-Cola product. They should pay me at least $1,000 for saying that. All right, you guys can hear the orb. Does Jane support abolishing the snack please. Well Jane. Shes figured out how to drag chairs and into the kitchen get into the high cabin and she can also pick the cabinet locks. So were a little bit at a loss of what to do. Your article didnt say much about st John of apparel Sarah statues being destroyed right. I mean. And that was intentional right. So if you look at what Gloria Purves says she is a devout Catholic. She is a black woman. And she was at the canonization of Saint junipero Serra. She was at the canonization in Washington d.c. during pope Francis first visit to the United States. She was there right. She is not saying tear down statues and burn churches. Quite the opposite. What shes saying is every time we say police killings of black people extrajudicial executions of black people are not good or bad should stop. That there is systemic racism in the United States. We should not have to then before we deal with that issue deal with this question of statutes. She is saying, can we please prioritize such that we are dealing with the issue of human lives before were dealing with the issue of statute. Shes not saying its unimportant. Right just saying that these statues in many cases can be replaced can be rebuilt and she supports that right. Its just that its frustrating to her as a black woman. And I fully understand this. And I think its fairly reasonable that every time she brings up these killings of black people by police instead of having that discussion or feeling solidarity from her co religionists on that front, she has to get into a discussion about statues right. Exactly we can walk and chew gum at the same time. And you know, I think in some situations in order to establish trust and good faith you have to have the one conversation before the other. How do you square your radical democratic politics and economics with the Episcopal sea. Well, I have my techniques I would not describe them as maybe radically democratic. You know I believe in democracy. The church has democratic functions inside of it. So the church is not like wholesale opposed to democracy. In fact, I think there are quite a few encyclicals that encourage it. So is there one piece of writing that you think would be beneficial for all humans to read. I mean, you know, the Iliad is good tells you many things worth considering. I dont l everybody should read the hobbit. Its a lot of fun doing that to my kids. Whos my favorite mystic. I say dog cross really and Gregory Anissa are you in a new place. Yes, I am at my friends house because Im in the process of moving. And so everything is sort of in a big tizzy right now. How do you square Black Lives Matter anti church rhetoric again right. You dont have to pay it to eat. Youre not being asked to affirm everything said by every single person in a broad coalition or movement. Right look at this in 1963 archbishop Patrick Boyle of Washington gave the prayer invocation at the March on Washington. Standing next to Martin Luther King jr. Do you think that he believed and agreed with and affirmed every single thing every faction in that coalition believe. No, I mean, it was interfaith right. There were people of all faiths there were Jewish people there are Catholic people there were Protestant people there secular people no doubt. So obviously saying that the principles at hand here are worthwhile principles that our faith demands. We respect is not the same thing as affirming every single message that comes out of a coalition movement. Right this is very, very easy. What is more essential reading Greek mythology or the Bible. I know you know I mean, I like them both. OK Bible is hard to read. Very difficult to read. Yeah You know people need help. I needed help. I went to school for it. So you know important and good. And I think the parts that are necessary are quite obvious. But you can also kind of guilt turned around in there is it similar to how one can promote the ideas of socialism, communism while acknowledging yes. Elizabeth its a core principle of BLM. Oh my god. Guys stop paying attention to the organization. OK Just dont worry about the Black Lives Matter global network. No one is asking you to affirm everything thats in their agenda statement of principles or what theyre asking to affirm the principle that police should be killing black people right. Thats all you have to. Thats all you have to do here. Or I mean, you dont have to I cant make you Im trying to write a persuasive article. But if what youre saying is this organization thats involved in a vast coalition or movement, which includes people who are in the organization, and like a huge majority of people who are not in the organization. If youre saying that you cant affirm the principles there of this huge coalition movement that is not strictly or I would even say mainly the organization Black Lives Matter global network. Youre saying you cant affirm the principle that there shouldnt be extrajudicial killings of black people, mainly because theyre black because there is an organization involved in this movement that is atheistic or anti church. I dont know what to tell you dont go to the March for Life. For sure, because there are secular people there every year they make a huge deal of it. Right So I dont know what to tell you. St. Thomas Aquinas or st. Augustine st. Augustin. Answer the question. Banana pudding or peach cobbler peach cobbler within the ice cream opinion on baking with soda like baking soda is oftentimes very important. Favorite Ben and Jerrys flavor Cherry Garcia Liz whats the best southern food. Fried chicken. Any tips on homemade pecan pie. Dude I dont like to comply. I dont know. Its not great. Its not great. I dont know. Maybe its just that they comply Ive had. I like the cons a lot. I love the cons. But you know, I like chopped up in oatmeal or something. But to come by. Its not me. I its extra thing. And its sort of like really kind of gooey stuff going on under the Yeah. I dont know. Yes Patrick OBoyle did tell John Lewis to change the speech because he thought it was too militant. The fact that Patrick OBoyle still showed up is evidence that you do not have to agree with everything in a coalition or movement right to agree with the core principles. In fact, you can state. I disagree with this. I disagree with that. But I agree with this. Youre entitled to do that. Thats fine. For instance, I will state. Now I disagree with anti church rhetoric and anti theistic and anti religious rhetoric that comes out of this anti-racist movement. But I affirm that catholics Christians should absolutely be opposed to police killings of black people. Favourite bill Murray movie. Thats a good question. Bill Murray is such an interesting actor. I really, really like lost in translation. I mean caddyshack is very, very hard to beat as well. Have you ever been to Ireland thoughts or opinions. I have never been to beautiful Ireland. I would love to go one day someone says, why just black people again, because that is the issue at hand right. It doesnt mean that every other issue every other killing is extraneous. The question. I think that frustrates so many black catholics and I know Gloria Purvis is when you say, look should police stop killing black people. Should the extrajudicial killings of black people stop when some other conversation has to come before that like what about police killings of other people. What about nuclear disarmament. Isnt it more important that we pull out of Iraq. I mean, yes, these are all conversations that are worth having. But can you just say yes to that one question first, I dont understand why not. Can you explain the Texas expat mindset. I mean, you know, you always miss Texas. I love Texas right. MacIntyre good. Great MacIntyre its great. I love Alice. MacIntyre a key element to examine is is there injustice present. If so Christians must be on the side of justice. I agree. Thoughts on Corrie bush went congratulations been on board since the beginning whataburger order. Oh my god. I mean, I always get fries no matter what else Im getting I like I like a lot of burger junior with everything I like. They like a moderate chicken mouth is really good. I like their barbecue chicken sandwich. The honey butter chicken biscuits you can get at breakfast are so good. I mean, I used to in the summer when I was a short window after I was diagnosed with epilepsy. Before I lost my drivers license that I could drive and when my parents would leave for work in the morning. I around like 745 I would get in my car and put my cat in there with me. I had a siamese at the time. And we would drive to water burger. And I would get a honey butter chicken biscuit and share some of it with them. Because good times miss that someone also asked about I am from Texas. Im from Arlington Texas. And someone asked me, what is my jack in the box order. Much easier. I like the chicken strips. The tacos curly fries with ranch and almost all of their like money boxes are really good. Do I live in Texas. Not currently unfortunately favorite legit Chinese restaurant in d.c. There was a really good place out in Falls Church called peking and gourmet. Its like its quite fancy and the family that owns it is really fantastic. And its great. I love it. Why do Christians have a hard time separating church from state. Well, because you know, Christians feel its only one source of morality. And politics is just a branch of ethics right. Thats just Aristotle so youre from edinburg Texas. Welcome how can the church push priest to support the Black Lives Matter movement, not necessarily organization and church pro-life issues. I think its just a matter of talking the people around you. Only 3% of American catholics are black. There are not many. And oftentimes American catholics are still sort of siloed and mainly black parishes. So I think its a matter of you know bringing people like Gloria in and just having conversation, talk to them as human beings. Do I have a seminary degree. No, I didnt go to seminary because I cannot be clergy. I have a masters of philosophy from Cambridge university and Christian theology. Do people at the New York Times ever say failing New York Times for locals. I know that my parents often say that to me for locals. Also the lying New York Times. So it is what it is. Lets see Miss you on left, right, and center. Miss you too makes for a good breakfast burrito. Well, thats another thing about water bird or whatever your breakfast iquitos is freaking amazing. Theyre awesome. I love them. Like sausage, egg, and cheese breakfast ticky iquitos from whataburger. There is no limit to how many of those. I can eat. I could eat them until I physically injured myself is football or baseball more popular in Texas Well probably football in terms of watching it. But you know people like baseball and my husband played football and baseball bets on the next pope. I cannot I cannot begin to predict. Thoughts on the space trilogy by c.s. Lewis. Freaking awesome. Actually I was talking to someone else yesterday about the sparrow. All all of the catholics in space books are amazing. And there are many of them. Yeah, I love them all. What position did mat play in baseball Matt. What position did you play in baseball all except catcher. He says, do you think you can be Christian while thinking the Bible is not such an essential tax. Read evil Christians. Yeah Well, mean, you know, it. We are. We are not you know as people of the book right. I mean, we havent we have a living faith. Thats still in development right. There are still revelations happening. So the bibles obvious extremely important foundational pillar of the faith. But there are also other things. And so its a matter of discernment and being together in our faith. Its very hard to do Christianity alone. Mainly what you need are other Christians. I think you can probably the orb is the orb is in containment. Would you like to see the orb. Someone asked why have you prioritized Black Lives Matter over COVID. I have written several articles on cove. In fact, I have written at least two reported articles on catholics and copied. So I am paying attention to the plague. All right, I am going to try summoning the orb back. Do you want a green cleric here. Shes going to sleep. Im sorry. Thats why shes calling for me to rescue her because shes being put down for a nap. So shes you know my mother. Come get me out of my baby cage. Why is Christian dating so hard. I cannot even imagine. He is very angry. The orb is furious. Objects are about to start flying off the walls and the electricity is going to go out as she uses her giant mind to tell the kinetically manipulate our surroundings. Do I like Joni Mitchell. Yeah, I really do. I love folk music. I listen to it a. I love Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. I love Neil young on his own you know helplessly hoping as maybe one of my favorite songs of all time. I love a case of you love Stevie Nicks a big fleetwood Mac fan. Very, very often very often listen to Joni Mitchell Joan Baez whos just unrivaled in my opinion. Can we get Ross to march. We can try. You know Gordon Lightfoot love Gordon Lightfoot. Actually theres a great cover of Gordon Lightfoot. I think that Sarah McLachlan did of if you can read my mind, which is like this extremely heartbreaking song he wrote about his divorce. The beautiful, beautiful stuff. I love Gordon Lightfoot. In the early morning rain with a buckle in my hand. Also Steve Wynwood blind faith right. Cant find my way home. Awesome Good stuff too late to help out people. Course all right. So Texas is all about thoughts on southern Baptist dominance in Texas Well you know. I mean, Ive written on Texas in evangelicals several times. And you know I think theres nuance there. And so forth. Thoughts on cardinal Burke always well dressed thoughts on Morgellons. No we get to hear both sides know about that on live. Should I have a kid. Yeah, sure. You know, Im quite attached to mine. I think you know, you know maybe enjoy enjoy it. Ive enjoyed my right. Lets see. Alaska is more than twice the size of Texas. Take that. Thats true. Alaska is bigger in terms of landmass but not in terms of spirit. The Texan soul is enormous. Yeah And you know Texans like that. While the biggest in the continental unites a contiguous United States a kid scares the shit out of me. Oh, it scared the shit out of me. Certainly not wrong about that. My favorite Western. Thats a good question. I like a lot of them. Well, there was this late great period in the 70s where, you have a bunch of fantastic westerns that also have like just amazing soundtracks. Like knockin on heavens door Butch Cassidy and Sundance kid. I mean, all of that John rough sort of dark 1970s westerns with these amazing folk soundtracks. Just kill it. For me personally, we have a Canadian trying to own Texas, which I will I will allow because you know Texas is big enough to sustain some minor distance from our friendly neighbors up north. I dont mean Oklahoma. Oklahoma is absolutely never allowed to diss Texas who is my favorite rapper. Please dont say M&M. Yeah, I know that shes been canceled although Im not sure why, but Im a big Nicki Minhaj fan pills and potions. Great song. I mean, honestly, Ive not heard many songs of hers. And I dont really like John Lee is great. I mean, big Nicki Minhaj fan. This has been the hope this has been a useful chat sort of winding down a bit here. Headwinds book this life. Yeah Im partially through it. Have you seen the pic of big tax on for her. Yes, it was funny. They had him in like a party. It was a bit of a law. Thoughts on the discourse around cultural appropriation. Im not really the best person on it. I havent read deeply enough into it. Sorry I thought is a useful occasionally interesting is seen in 8 or is it something thats learned tendency to sin. Did I grow up in a Texas suburb. Yes, I did. I grew up in a suburb of Dallas and also kind of a suburb of Fort Worth in between the d and the fw Arlington. Who do I need to bribe to get you back. Im left, right, and center. I have no idea. I have no idea. No idea. Where did you cut your posting teeth before Twitter. Well, I dont really remember life before Twitter. I dont know. Thats a good question. Any pub dates puppy updates. Yeah, weve promised the children a puppy. So were trying to figure out how to do that. If CBS offered you Allens job would you take it, absolutely an instant. And I actually am nice right. Im way too passive, to be mean to staff right now. There was someone who tweeted one time that like when a waitress says, do mind if I reach over you. They think to themselves maam you can shoot me with a gun right now. Oh been kind of very similar in dealing with the waitstaff or anyone whos working with me. If you cant be nice to people who are helping you do your job, then you know you need to not have a job. But he got his name the New York Times many crossword. When will you get your name in there. I dont know. I guess when I earn it. Thoughts on corgis. I saw a corgi in a shopping cart yesterday at a Home Depot. Thought it was really cute. I have not read Kennedys head to be an anti-racist though Ive read like a million reviews of it at this point. There was a good one that ran in the Atlantic and there was a good one in The New Yorker. I sometimes end up reading more book reviews than books and unfortunately, some of time you know some navy seals. No, Im not sure that I do. But I would welcome getting to know a navy seal it sounds like an interesting job. Cormac McCarthy fan O my idol right. Enormous Cormac McCarthy fan. I would give anything to have 20% of the writing acumen of Cormac McCarthys. Every time I try to write something in in or manage to Cormac McCarthy I feel like you like ash and the Royal Tenenbaums, You know the frisky leading dusk just comes up really absurd. And he deeply reported pieces upcoming. Oh, Yeah, absolutely. What are you and Frank Czech going to do a podcast called living it up. Thats a good question. Favorite brunch drink. I dont drink alcohol. So at brunch. I usually just have the cold. Frankly not very interesting. Doesnt CarMax sort of lead you to the water and then turn around and walk you away. Yeah well hes a very hes a very interesting sort of poet of moral ambiguity. I think thats what makes him. So great. Right anybody can be didactic and I. I guess my great goal as a writer is to not necessarily be so obviously didactic but to point to moral ambiguity because I think exposure to moral ambiguity develops your moral capacities right. Ultimately you have to develop an internal moral sensibility yourself and only exposure to ambiguity where you have to sort out morality in difficult situations is going to build that capacity that skill set. Whats your disassociated style and poppet troll comes on just like pass out while Im still awake. I mean, I had dreams about puppetry like this. Its just when Paul patrol comes on. I mean, I lose like 10% of my will to live. But you know. You know its better than some alternatives. So have you been in the k hole. What is the k hole. Is that like the k hive. No lose you are one of my favorite whites. Thank you. My friend but the troll for the troll. Yes someone is now posting that. No, I have not been on ketamine. Why am I being asked that. Is this a meme or am I doing something that suggests that Im on ketamine. Is Texas barbecue supreme. Yeah, I mean, I think Texas barbecue is what I was raised with. So of course, Im going to be pretty pretty dedicated to it. How are things going with the peoples policy project. I think its good. Am I a junkie. Biden is curious. No, I dont think so. OK So youve got some kind of ketamine thing going here. No, Im off on the ketamine means cycle IV. Im too old. What do you imagine the heavenly kingdom is like. Yeah, thats a good question. I think Gregory Agnes says God is so infinite right. That your understanding of him and love for him is permanently evolving and always changing. So I imagine heaven as this circumstance of infinite discovery. So think of every time you ever learn something new and felt the pleasure of understanding and the curiosity of searching and the satisfaction of discovering. I think heaven is that over and over and over again about the nature of God. And then also, its a situation where youre permanently loving and growing and love all the time. And you know anyone whos ever been in love knows thats emotional and thrilling and also deeply peaceful. My favorite Japanese kit Kat. Yeah, so theyre like ones youre supposed to put in the oven that are like cheek ache. I think, or something or like a custom I mean, obviously, I cant read the KNG on there. My friend sent them to me when she was living in Japan for a while. But was really good. What is my favorite film that deals with faith. Silence Scorsese Daisy right now. Quite like that one. Its very explicit. Can you cancel my meeting. So I can keep hearing you talk. Yeah post your bosss number right now. This is the New York Times and I need you to release your employees from meetings. This is important. Were talking about my water burger order. Weve talked about liberation is charcuterie Bourgeois. Probably although Matt likes meats on a plate. Some meetings are canceled. What is your opinion on Florida. I think its fine. I mean, you know, it draws heat away from Texas in terms of the press. So you have to appreciate that. Lets see is it true. You can dunk a basketball. No no those reports vastly exaggerated. Did you have, especially memorable pregnancies. I had very easy pregnancies very, very blessed by that easy pregnancies easy deliveries. Would you accept a Joe Rogan invite. Yeah, absolutely. Talk to whoever wants to talk to me, honestly. All right. So my position has always been and always will be that anyone who honestly wants to have a conversation really interested in talking its not just like a bad faith dunk fast or something. I will talk to them. It doesnt matter who they are right or where theyre coming from always willing to talk. All right. How tall am I I am four foot 11. Someone says hello hello what did you think of the Bill Maher movie religious. I remember at one point religious bill Ma goes to like a Christian theme park. And he gets owned by a theme park Jesus because hes like the Trinity doesnt make any sense. And then this guy whose job is to dress up like Jesus and walk around a theme park is like, well, you know think of it like water you have water, but it can also be a gas. And then you have ice and its a solid sea of solid liquid gas. So the Trinity is similar to that though Mars has nothing to say to it. Hes like. And then the next day hes like in a car and hes like, you know it looked like I was owned but actually, I was not. Which I found really entertaining. You know eternity is hard to explain. But the guy did an OK job and the point is whether or not it was like a theologically astute description of the Trinity kid owned by a few for Jesus. Its really enjoyable. Favorite recently published novels. Yeah, Ive been trying to read my year of rest and relaxation. I just havent had a whole lot of time. But you know one of these days. I hope to get through it. I try to keep abreast of the new books the kids are all talking about, and so on. All right or winding down here. Did I ever get into Game of Thrones. I also, it should be said that I was like kind of like in a transitional phase in my life when Game of Thrones was happening, I was like in college and my family got really undo it. So I was home for I think Christmas. It could have been the summer. But I know we got Olive Garden to go for some reason. So like Im standing in the kitchen from which there is a view of my familys TV. My familys all the living room watching TV and Im like standing there eating my you know tour of Italy or whatever. And theres like a little girl being burned to death. And I was like, what the hell is this. And my parents are like, no trust. Trust me, you trust me. Its you know the plot. Its important to the plot. But since that was pretty much my first experience of the show. I tagged out. But I know I know the general plot because it was it was around in the other three minutes 3 minutes of questions and really important stuff for the last three minutes. I cant tell if Matts a baseball fan or cynic is he either. Yeah Matts a fan of all sport. But hes not a fan in the usual sense where he follows teams he just enjoys what he calls good game play. So he likes weird, interesting trick players who used to like Boise State a lot. You know he just likes bizarre things happening in sports, that kind of play with the limitations of the rules. Would you try ketamine with me. Is that not like a veterinary drug. No you guys need to stop stop taking ketamine and stop trying to imitate ketamine. Thoughts on Schwarber. Very good. Favorite sport. I dont know. You know. You know I find football is nice. It reminds me of fall. Raising hay while Boise State a favorite spiritual works on dark knight of soul confessions. Those are you know the showings. Julian Norwood to Norwich very, very important, if not the US. Where would you live and why Canada. Because its nice and everyone is nice there. Do you think Garfield is bad in silence. If so do you think thats the point. A county and Dracula. OK So Bram stokers Dracula is one of the greatest movies of all time. I freaking love that movie because its like just pure 100% kitsch like top to bottom. Total kitsch. It is self-aware. Its got always was its guy Anthony Hopkins doing it kind of a strange cookie monster that voice. Its got Keanu Reeves Winona Ryder I mean, it is bananas and I love that movie. I have it on all the time when company is over because no matter where theres a breaking conversation theres something insane happening in that film. And Garfield I mean, I thought the problem with him in silence was that he basically is just weeping from like frame one through the very end and may you know I suppose thats not too terribly difficult that it is you know or too terribly different than the character of Rodriguez in the novel although I think that Rodriguez in the novel takes a lot longer to kind of collapse and its really that sort of scene in the river where you start to see things go awry. But Yeah, I think its a good film for lunch. Im going to have I think breakfast for lunch. All right. I think Ive got to take off. Get back to work and follow up with you guys later. I hope you have a good day. Thank you for tuning in, and Yeah. OK So one more question would you recommend any other of work. Yes read the C and poison but shes lucky Linda. All right love you guys have a good day. Bye bye.

Following Todays Action Will ETH Finally Close Above $400? (Ethereum Price Analysis) – CryptoPotato

Key Support Levels: $370, $350, $321.Key Resistance Levels: $400, $408, $420.

Ethereum has seen a strong 8% price increase over the past seven days of trading, which allowed it to reach as high as $408 (1.618 Fib Extension) earlier in the week. Since then, ETH has rolled over and dropped into the support at $380, where it rebounded today.

The bulls have now set their targets to break $400 again to push higher. The last time that Etheruem managed to close above $400 was during August of 2018 exactly two years ago.

Looking ahead, the first level of resistance is expected at $400. This is immediately followed by resistance at $408 (1.618 Fib Extension). If the buyers can continue to drive Ethereum higher, the following targets are expected at $420, $445, and $463.

On the other side, the first level of strong support is expected at $370 (.236 Fib Retracement). This is followed by support at $343 (.382 Fib Retracement), $321 (.5 FIb Retracement), and $300 (.618 Fib Retracement).

The RSI has dropped lower from overbought conditions as the buyers take a break before regrouping. So long as it can remain above 50, the momentum will remain in the bulls favor.

Key Support Levels: 0.0326 BTC, 0.0317 BTC, 0.031 BTC.Key Resistance Levels: 0.0337 BTC, 0.035 BTC, 0.0356 BTC.

Etheruem also performed very well in the first week of August as it surged from 0.03 BTC to reach as high as 0.035 BTC. From there, Ethereum has dropped lower as it falls into the 0.0326 BTC level, where support is provided by a .236 Fib Retracement.

The coin rebounded from this support today as the bulls begin the push back toward the 0.035 BTC level.

Looking ahead, if the buyers do push higher, the first level of resistance is located at 0.0337 BTC (March 2019 support). This is followed with resistance at 0.035 BTC, 0.0356 BTC (1.414 Fib Extension), and 0.0367 BTC

On the other side, the first level of support lies at 0.0326 BTC (.236 Fib Retracement). Beneath this, support lies at 0.0317 BTC, 0.031 BTC (.382 Fib Retracement), and 0.030 BTC (.5 Fib Retracement).

Likewise, the RSI has also dipped lower but remains above the 50 line, which indicates that the bulls are still in control of the market momentum.

Ethereum (ETH) Down $1.67 in Last 4 Hours, Underperforms All Top Cryptos to Start the Day; But Still in an Uptrend Over Past 14 Days – CFDTrading

Ethereum 4 Hour Price Update

Updated August 08, 2020 11:19 PM GMT (07:19 PM EST)

The choppiness in the recent four-hour candle price action of Ethereum continues; to start the current 4 hour candle, it came in at a price of 390.06 US dollars, up 0.1% ($0.39) since the previous 4 hours. Relative to other instruments in the Top Cryptos asset class, Ethereum ranked 4th since the previous 4 hours in terms of percentage price change.

Ethereum closed the previous day down 3.92% ($15.5); this denotes the 2nd day in a row a decrease has occurred. The price move occurred on stronger volume; specifically, yesterdays volume was up 59.66% from the day prior, and up 13.99% from the same day the week before. Those trading within the Top Cryptos asset class should know that Ethereum was the worst performer in the class during the previous day. Here is a daily price chart of Ethereum.

The clearest trend exists on the 30 day timeframe, which shows price moving up over that time. Or to view things another way, note that out of the past 14 days Ethereums price has gone up 10 them.

For laughs, fights, or genuinely useful information, lets see what the most popular tweets pertaining to Ethereum for the past day were:

@Narodism @musalbas @MPtherealMVP @NickSzabo4 So you dislike the aesthetics of some people in the ethereum community (btw Ive never done a burner party, LSD or a sex orgy) therefore ethereum has lost the plot? If I wanted to I could make similar caricatures about the whole rah rah Im manly because I eat steak thing.

I follow a lot of Bitcoin accounts and a lot of Ethereum accounts. Im noticing that currently Ethereum accounts are a bit stronger than Bitcoin accounts. More articulate, more well-versed with the other sides arguments, better at making the other side seem less knowledgeable.

My @discord account was suspended this morning because I sent too many private messages to people that wanted their @poapxyz to recall the @ethereum medalla testnet launch. Please help me making this visible to the discord support team so they know Im no spammer

Regulated Ethereum Futures Coming – Somag News

Open interest on Ethereum futures rose to $ 1.46 billion. The new ATH came a few days after Bitcoin futures had a similar success. On August 1, the open interest rate rose to $ 5.58 billion, the highest point since mid-February, just before the crypto market continued a major correction.

Malta-based cryptocurrency exchange OKEx leads the way with contracts worth $ 321.06 million.

OKEXs competitor from Singapore, Huobi, is in second place. The open interest rate for Ethereum contracts currently stands at $ 308.55 million, following OKEx with a very thin margin, with a margin of 0.8 percent.

Together with BitMEX, OKEX and Huobi are responsible for 61.64 percent of all market activities for Ethereum futures.

FTX and Binance are in fourth and fourth place, respectively.

In the options section, ETHs open interest has also increased six-fold over the past three months, making up 90 percent of all positions on the unregulated Dutch exchange Deribit.

As the cryptocurrency space matures, Tim McCourt of CME Group claims that more investors will flock to trusted domains:

When it enters the cryptocurrency space with more sophisticated contributors, the volume will inevitably shift towards safer, more reliable areas.

Ether futures are said to be launched within the next six months.

New York-based ErisX launched Ether futures in March, but CME Group has not yet ventured into the second largest cryptocurrency.

Business Council of BC urges province to ‘fast-track’ economic recovery measures – Daily Commercial News

The Business Council of British Columbia (BCBC) is urging government officials to take stronger action to spur economic recovery with a series of recommendations under its Stronger Tomorrow, Starting Today plan.

Jock Finlayson, BCBC executive vice-president and chief policy officer, explained while the group supports the provinces reopening plans and recognizes officials have done a good job of dealing with the public health side of the crisis, more must be done for the economy.

Where we havent seen much out of the province is immediate economic recovery and also building foundations for prosperity, said Finlayson. Thats why we have developed a plan.

Finlayson explained the plan is focussed on clear actions that can build confidence and the conditions necessary to pursue opportunities that come from B.Cs advantages. These include a highly educated and innovative population; a global low-carbon advantage from natural resources and energy exports; and proximity to major global markets.

Construction plays an important role in both because certainly looking to the rest of this year and the next, the extent to which we can dial up construction activity, projects and spending on maintenance and improvements, that will help move that economy forward, said Finlayson. Over the long term that is obviously investing in physical infrastructure to have a competitive advantage for growing the economy.

He added because of its unique situation, B.C. needs its own economic plan.

Unlike a lot of other places, we have a rapidly growing population, he said. That creates demand for housing and other goods and service. That demographic growth creates a different context here.

With its ports and other trade infrastructure, the province is Canadas gateway to the Asia-Pacific region.

That has quite an impact on the structure of our economy. We have to protect industrial land and support that gateway.

B.C. also has an export industry still heavily based in natural resource products.

If we are going to grow in the short and medium term, we need to pay attention to the business environment for the natural resource production sector, said Finlayson.

Recommendations by the BCBC for immediate action include expanding rapid access to child care and training additional child care workers; accelerating investments in trade, transportation and digital infrastructure; creating more certainty by pausing new regulations and policies that would increase business costs and slow rehiring until the end of 2021; and providing a temporary reduction of the Provincial Sales Tax to 3.5 per cent to help household affordability and assist small businesses.

In total, the plan gives 24 recommendations.

According to the BCBC, the core of the plan is focused on building the foundation for sustained growth, through a more innovative and affordable economy that encourages investment that grows businesses and that creates new jobs in the digital age.

Finlayson said that with a V-shaped recovery looking unlikely, the province needs to move fast.

Now is not a time for business as usual, he said, noting that maintenance and improvement work can be pushed through quickly and projects with the potential to attract billions of dollars, like the Coastal GasLink Pipeline and the Trans Mountain Pipeline Expansion, need to be supported.

If I was in government I would look to fast-track things and stop trying to throw sand into the gears of significant private sector projects.

He also said projects that have stalled for years, like the Massey Tunnel Replacement project should also be pushed forward.

The government has been consulting over the summer how to spend $1.5 billion in economic recovery funds which isnt much in the context of our economy, said Finlayson. We will see what they come up with. Ultimately it is up to the government to lead on this.

India Must Plan New Strategy for Cities to Reap Full Benefits of ‘Self-Reliance’ Initiative – TheCityFix

Current transport networks in large Indian cities are woefully inadequate for integrating the labor markets created by new growth clusters across metropolitan regions. Photo by Benoit Colin/WRI

While announcing a stimulus package of INR 20 lakh crore ($260 billion) in his address to the nation on May 12, Indias Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged citizens to make use of the opportunity provided by the COVID-19 pandemic to attract investments and manufacturing jobs. Given that cities will likely be the predominant focus of these investments when they come, there is an urgent need to equip them with reimagined strategies and plans to enable their economies to flourish.

Article 243W of the Indian Constitution states that cities, or Urban Local Bodies, are responsible for planning for economic and social development. Although several aspects of economic development in cities depend on the policies and programs of state governments, cities nonetheless can help create an enabling environment that promotes vibrancy and innovation to facilitate economic growth.

To that end, a large part of the recent policy changes towards Atma-nirbhar Bharat (self-reliance) can be realized by reorienting cities from being mostly consumption centers to production hubs by building manufacturing capabilities for goods and consumables at scale. This, in turn, will require formulation of spatial economic development plans that position cities for global competitiveness and promote sustainable and viable development of city clusters to accommodate growth and attract investments. The success of city clusters will entail four main considerations:

Cities, as Alain Bertaud argues, are essentially large pools of labor. Innovation and productivity thrive in cities based on the size of their labor markets and as long as the markets remain integrated. Having recognized the importance of integrated markets, many cities across the world have developed functional city regions through efficient and rapid regional transport systems. The transport network is designed such that most parts of these regions can be accessed within 90-120 minutes of travel in public transit. As a result, economic clusters in most of these cities go beyond the constructs of administrative boundaries.

The Greater Copenhagen Region is one such cross-border zone that facilitates access to a multiplicity of specializations across borders. While most of the jobs in the region are available on the Danish side, affordable housing is located on the Swedish side. Inter-regional collaboration on the Oresund Metro strategic project has led to further expansion in the catchment area, which helps provide access to 1.3 million jobs within 60 minutes of travel time.

China went a step further with plans to connect 80% of its cities in the Greater Pearl River Delta Region through provincial and federal government partnerships with high-speed rail to facilitate access to labor and better logistics.

Current transport networks available in large Indian cities are woefully inadequate for integrating the labor markets created by new growth clusters across metropolitan regions. There is a need to invest heavily in transport infrastructure that allows for efficient and frictionless movement of labor and goods across metropolitan regions, on par with other global cities.

Gerald A. Carlino and Albert Saiz posit that beautiful cities not only tend to attract a highly educated workforce but also experience faster appreciation in housing prices. Greater availability of a variety of social and cultural amenities such as parks, historic places and museums is crucial for attracting and retaining highly skilled labor in the city.

After the financial crisis in the 1990s, a few Asian cities like Seoul completely changed their approach towards urban planning and development. The city prioritized restoring historic, cultural and natural environments through revitalization of public places, notably the Cheonggyecheon stream restoration. This not only led to greater economic development of the surrounding areas but also boosted Seouls image around the world as a city committed to sustainable development.

In India, townships like those in Jamshedpur and Rajarhat have been heavily investing in socio-cultural infrastructure, including affordable housing, to attract and retain jobs and talent. But more often local development priorities tend to favor building hard infrastructure over social and cultural amenities. Indian cities must invest in the development of inclusive neighborhoods, with access to amenities for all, if they are to attract and retain valuable formal and informal workers.

It is widely argued that government-driven approaches to promote innovation through city clusters and industrial districts hasnt really worked. However, city governments have a key role to play in fostering innovation and competition by enabling partnerships, removing regulatory barriers and providing flexibility so that cost of doing business is reduced and unhindered experimentation can take place. Austin, Texas, is a prime example of how a collaborative tech culture combined with affordability, tolerance, economic complexity and good quality of life can make a city desirable.

Cities such as Seoul have experimented with urban design guidelines by converting certain areas into living labs or testbeds for piloting cutting-edge green technology and urban restoration.

In the recent past, Hyderabad liberalized land use regulations, such as those around floor area ratio, to let markets decide the density and diversity of neighborhoods instead of focusing on investing in physical infrastructure. Other cities can follow these leads to promote innovation by relaxing zoning and business regulations in certain areas, incentivizing micro, small and medium enterprises, and brokering partnerships between industry, academia, R&D institutes and financiers that not only improve the viability of such areas but also help in the development of skilled and employable labor.

According to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, urban areas account for two-thirds of global energy demand and produce 80% of greenhouse gas emissions and 50% of global wastewater. With climate change and urbanization patterns significantly affecting production value chains, there is a need to move away from resource-intensive production and consumption patterns. It is imperative to explore circular economy solutions that can strengthen the regenerative capacity of nature and lead to more equitable access to resources.

Cities such as Copenhagen are actively pursuing circular economy projects at city and neighborhood scales. The city has also invested in cycling infrastructure, incentivizing the move towards clean transport.

Indian cities are well positioned to actively pursue initiatives to influence consumption patterns of households and firms, especially in water, energy, transport and waste. Through procurement process reforms, combined with environmentally friendly policies and regulations, cities can put in practice the principles of reduce, reuse and recycle to expand urban infrastructure and become more resource secure.

In order to return to a better normal one where the economy and environment dont just co-exist but thrive together, and public health is not compromised due to either imperative we will need to ensure policies and practices that manifest compact, connected and clean cities. Sterile urban planning will need to reorient towards a more dynamic and adaptive process, through which urban economic strategy evolves and moves forward. A reinvigorated approach through incorporation of economic development strategies into planning processes is crucial to create a sustainable urban paradigm in India.

Exorcist Ransomware and CIS Exclusion – Security Boulevard

This year has been a bumper year for ransomware and its operators. Ransomware gangs are demanding millions; if those millions are not paid in time, then data stolen before encryption is either released to the public or sold to the highest bidder. Big names in the cybercriminal underground have returned with an entirely new ransomware familynamely Evil Corp and its new creation WastedLocker. Not only is there a return to form for old hands, but new ransomware strains also seem to be bursting up like mushrooms after a spell of rain. NetWalker and Exorcist immediately come to mind. The latter is the subject of this article.

Discovered in late July by MalwareHunterTeam, the Exorcist ransomware is so new to the scene that information on it had been incredibly sparse. That was until Leandro Velasco published an article shedding much of the codes mysteryand in great depth. The article is a must-read for anybody wanting a technical analysis of the ransomware. In providing a brief overview of Exorcist, it seems to be distributed via a Pastebin PowerShell script that runs in memory. The script takes from lessons learned by Sodinokibi affiliates and is based on the Invoke-ReflectivePEInjection.ps1 script, further optimized to include a function that passes a base64 executable into the main function of the script. It is also possible that the script is generated by the no-longer-supported Empire framework.

The code itself is not obfuscatedwhile common practice with other types of malware, it is often not deemed necessary for ransomware by its developers. Part of the reason for this is that the encryption process is in itself very noisy and once that begins, any pretense of stealth is quickly forgotten and speed is the main requirement. Some ransomware strains do obfuscate their code, but it is not an unwritten rule that all malware be obfuscated.

The malwares first operation is to check the geolocation of the infected machine, which is done by checking the language and keyboard layout of the machine in question. If the result is any of the nations that make up the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS)which includes many of the nations that made up the Eastern Block during the Cold War and now still have close ties to Russiathe malwares operations are immediately stopped. Why this is done is discussed in greater depth in the second part of this article.

Screenshot of a ransom demanding message displayed by Exorcist ransomware:

If the geolocation check returns a nation not making up a part of the CIS, the ransomware executes several commands that disable and remove system backups. The commands will also look to terminate any system processes that may prevent encryption of certain file types. This is followed by the malware writing the public encryption key and the private key, as well as the file extension used to disk. Before encryption occurs, the malware will extract information including the username, hostname, OS version and keyboard layout and send those to a server under the attackers control. Once this is complete encryption begins utilizing multiple threads to drastically decrease the time to encrypt data. Finally, the wallpaper of the system is changed and the ransom note is dropped.

If you feel that you may have suddenly become a victim of Exorcist, there are a few tell-tale signs. First, the wallpaper announcing youve become a victim reads as follows:

Performing a search at the time of writing on the provided address in the ransom note reveals that no funds have been transferred to this address as of yet. Given how new the ransomware is, this is not a surprise. Further, no victims have announced publicly that they have fallen victim to Exorcist to the best of this writers knowledge. It may be that Exorcist has not seen wide distribution yet, as it may still be in development or slowly ramping up operations.

While there seem to be no active campaigns making headlines at the moment, this is probably not likely to last. One bit of news that emerged recently is that a hacker released a list of IP addresses for more than 900 Pulse Secure VPN enterprise servers. The list published in plaintext also included several usernames and passwords. The release was made on a Russian underground hacker forum, which is known to have multiple ransomware gangs contributing and actively posting. The list includes Sodinokibi, NetWalker, Lockbit, Avaddon, Makop and importantly for the purposes of this article Exorcist. In general, the forum is used by the gangs to hire more developers or affiliates tasked with distributing the ransomware.

The reason why the dump of Pulse Secure VPN credentials would make headlines is that many of the above-mentioned gangs have actively been targeting known vulnerabilities in VPNs to compromise an enterprise network. As the dump was done free of charge and in plain text, those using unpatched VPN products should be worried enough to patch them as a matter of priorityit may be that in the near future major enterprises will be seeing the Exorcists wallpaper and ransom note and be visiting their website.

The main reason why the developers behind Exorcist and several other malware families tend to not want to infect computers in Russia, its neighbors, and the countrys interest in the geopolitical stage is that the Russian government turns a blind eye to cybercrime conducted by nationals, as long as Russia and its interests are not targeted. This is why a quick internet search will reveal cybercriminals wanted in the U.S. or Europe posing in front of luxury cars bought with the proceeds from their criminal activity.

Further, it seems to be the case that rather than bringing these people to justice, Russian Intelligence will employ their expertise to supplement their own cyber warfare and cyber espionage operations. These rumors began some 20 years ago and recent events seem to prove they were closer to reality, further supported by skilled coders in the CIS and their earning potential. For many, it is far more lucrative to hack and be approached by the intelligence agencies in question than to work within the IT sector. Since immunity seems to be granted to hackers as long as they leave Russian interests alone, becoming a hacker seems to be more of a logical financial decision than the perceived view by most of society as hackers being social pariahs.

This scenario was further confirmed in 2019 when the Russian government passed laws that enabled the creation of a self-contained internet modeled after the one implemented successfully in China. A report published investigating the new law and its expected effects believed that the law would help further flame the flames of cybercrime, whether state-sponsored or independent, financially motivated hackers, and further the status quo mentioned above. The funny thing is the law would make it easier to crack down on hackers within Russian borders; however, attacks on Russias rivals such as the U.S. are seen as serving Russian interests even if done by cybercriminals.

An article about the relationship between the Russian government and its hackers, as well as hackers in neighboring states, concluded:

The availability of highly skilled and technically well-versed individuals also presents a pool of potential proxies that can be mobilized at a moments notice. Often, people will mobilize themselves and take political action in support of the government, as has happened in Estonia in 2007 and in Ukraine since 2014. Governments differ in their ability to catalyze such activity and the extent to which they are in a position to merely endorse, orchestrate, or actively direct their outcomes. In countries where public institutions and the states ability to exercise control have deteriorated, it is an uphill battle to break the increasingly entrenched incentive structures reinforcing existing proxy relationships. Meanwhile, the controversy over law enforcement cooperation, including mutual legal assistance and extradition, shows the limits of international cooperation and external influence. The phenomenon described in this chapter is therefore a cautionary tale of the potential pitfalls when a state significantly weakens or collapses and the consequences that will reverberate for decades to come.

For those tasked with defending networks against Exorcist and other ransomware gangs, expecting those who committed the crime to be arrested and brought to book is a pipe dream. Rather, the focus should be to do everything possible to prevent the attack in the first place.

Charting the Global Economy: U.S. Job Market Makes More Progress – Bloomberg

Employers in the U.S. are continuing to add to headcounts as demand slowly returns, while the U.K. central bank sees its countrys jobless rate rising to 7.5% by year-end. Meanwhile, Vietnam, China and Taiwan are seen as the brightest economies in Asia.

Here are some of the charts that appeared on Bloomberg this week, offering insight into the latest developments in the global economy:

Sources: Bloomberg surveys as of July 27; national statistics agencies

Almost all of the 60 economies surveyed for the Bloomberg Misery Index, which tallies inflation and unemployment outlooks, are projected to be more miserable this year amid Covid-19, with analysts expecting increased joblessness and tepid growth. The U.S. is projected to see the worst reversal of fortune this year in the ranking.

Americas job market continued to regain ground in July, though at a slower pace, indicating the economic rebound is still making headway despite a surge in coronavirus infections. Payrolls are still down 13 million from pre-pandemic levels.

The latest survey of manufacturers by the Institute for Supply Management showed lean inventories may be more commonplace throughout the economy, which could help underpin production. The share of purchasing managers at factories who say their customers stockpiles are too low was the second-highest in a decade.

The vacancy on the six-person Executive Board of the European Central Bank the departure of Luxemburgs Yves Mersch will create in December will be the last until 2026. With citizens of all four of the regions biggest economies already on the board, Merschs exit offers a rare prize to the rest.

Chinas inflation is set to drift down in the months ahead as food prices cool and slack household demand saps strength from prices of goods and services. Bloomberg Economics thinks CPI will be around zero by end-2020 on a year-over-year basis.
