Boeing: Space Overview

Posted: November 25, 2022 at 4:44 am

With experience gained from supporting every major U.S. endeavor to escape Earths gravity, were designing and building the future of safe, assured space exploration and commercial access even as we lead the digital transition of the satellite industry for both government and commercial customers around the globe.

Were enabling critical research on the International Space Station (ISS) that benefits the future space economy, deep-space exploration and life on Earth; returning crew launch capabilities to U.S. soil with the CST-100 Starliner commercial spacecraft; ensuring successful delivery to Earths orbit with the United Launch Alliance (ULA) joint venture between Boeing and Lockheed Martin; and building heavy-lift, human-rated propulsion to deep space with the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket that will launch missions on a path to the Gateway cislunar outpost, the moons surface and Mars. Boeing-built Tracking and Data Relay Satellites (TDRS) provide high-bandwidth communications between Earth-orbiting spacecraft and facilities on the ground.

We also design and build advanced space and communications systems for military, commercial and scientific uses, including advanced digital payload, all-electric propulsion and 3D manufacturing capabilities for spacecraft that can operate in the geosynchronous, medium-Earth-orbital or low-Earth-orbital planes. Were using innovative manufacturing practices, and simplifying and reducing the complexity of Boeing satellites.

Did Darwin Say It Is ‘Not the Strongest of Species That Survives’ but the ‘Most Adaptable’? – Snopes.com

Posted: October 17, 2022 at 10:13 am

Charles Darwin said, It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent, but the one most adaptable to change.

This quote appears to have originally been presented as a paraphrase of Darwins ideas.

English naturalist Charles Darwin has been subject to numerous misunderstandings and misattributions across the internet. One in particular takes the form of a popular quote that you can find on random blogs and in graphics, where Darwin reportedly said: It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent, but the one most adaptable to change.

This quote often varies depending on where you look, with another version replacing adaptable with responsive, for example. Nicholas J. Matzke, of the Department of Integrative Biology, University of California, Berkeley learned that this quote may have been taken from someone who was paraphrasing Darwin. Matzke won an award for his debunking effort from the Darwin Correspondence Project back in 2009.

The Darwin Correspondence Project, a collection of Darwins writings housed at the University of Cambridge, featured Matzkes discovery on their website. He found that the quote appeared to start out as a paraphrase of Darwins work, and came from a 1963 speech by Leon C. Megginson, Professor of Management and Marketing at Louisiana State University at Baton Rouge. The exact words of the speech were printed in the article Lessons from Europe for American Business, published in the The Southwestern Social Science Quarterly. Megginson said:

According to Darwins Origin of Species, it is not the most intellectual of the species that survives; it is not the strongest that survives; but the species that survives is the one that is able best to adapt and adjust to the changing environment in which it finds itself.

Matzke, in his blog, also found Megginson used a version of this paraphrase in other writings, and even a former student told him what he heard in his classes: I learned a lot of good things from Leon Megginsons classes. One of the most valuable things I heard him say went something like this: Charles Darwin didnt say that only the strong survive. What he said was that those who survive are the ones who most accurately perceive their environment and successfully adapt to it.

Matzke shared a few observations on how the quote had evolved:

(1) The quote appears to start as a paraphrase; there is no evidence that Megginson initially intended this to be taken as an exact quote; rather, at some later stage, someone copied down the phrase (perhaps in lecture notes, for example), and then later assumed it was an actual quote of Darwin. (2) The quote has apparently evolved over time to become shorter and pithier. I suspect that quotes that are shorter and more pithy have an adaptive advantage in collections of inspirational quotes, motivational seminars, and similar venues which seem to be common habitats for the quote in the business world. I hereby dub this process pithification. If, as I suspect, this is a common trend in bogus quotes, remember that you first heard the process described and named here first. (3) The untold piece of the story concerns what happened between 1964 and 1982. I have looked carefully in several old Megginson textbooks, thus far without success (although it is apparent that Megginson was very widely read, and liked to start his chapters with pithy quotes from famous people, usually unreferenced, and usually the authors are not indexed in the book index, so just looking at the index doesnt tell you whether or not Darwin has been cited).

According to the Darwin Correspondence Project, Megginson had an interest in the theories of evolution through mutual aid advocated by the Russian zoologist Karl Kessler, and his statements about Darwin clearly reflect that.

John van Wyhe, founder of Darwin Online and a professor at the University of Cambridge also debunked this quote in 2008, arguing that it was not found anywhere in the archived versions of Darwins letters, which brought it to Matzkes attention.

We thus rate this claim as a misattribution.

Royal commission into veteran suicides to commence hearings in Darwin this week – ABC News

Posted: at 10:13 am

After 30 years in the Australian Defence Force, former Sergeant Dan Tellamconsiders himself one of the lucky ones.

Unlike the 648 defence personnel between 1970 and 2020 who are confirmed or suspected to have died by suicide, Sergeant Tellum survived an attempt at taking his own life.

He said part of what contributed to his suicidal ideation was his treatment by senior officers in the Royal Australian Air Force.

"Even though I did love defence, it was unfair how you could be treated. You could be harassed and bulliedwithin defence [and] it was part of the job," he said.

He saidhe was posted away from his family in Darwin against his wishes,in what he believes was a coercive plot from senior officers to get him to discharge.

The former airman, who was discharged on medical grounds in 2015, made his submission to the Royal Commission into Defence and VeteranSuicide last week.

New figures show he's far from alone, with the commission receiving a fifth of its overall submissions in just the past two months alone.

The commission will hold its next two weeks of sittings in Darwin in its first session sincehanding down an interim report in August, which made 13 recommendations and led to a government apology.

And itstask remains unchanged:to listen and document many harrowing stories and produce effective change to reduce the comparatively higher rates of suicide among defence members and veterans.

Another veteran, Sam Weston, said the Australian Defence Force provided "zero" support to him after two deployments to Timor Leste.

"For me personally there was no assistance when I got out," he said.

"I got out in '04,it was 'see ya later'. There was no aftercare. it wasn't until years later when I contacted them that I got any type of help," he said.

Mr Weston has already provided evidence to the commission in Darwin ahead of public hearings that begin tomorrow.

"While I am sceptical, I think, if things can be put on a paper and the public can be see what we're going on about that's a good start," Mr Weston said.

Though public hearings are yet to begin, Commission Chair Nick Kaldas has already begun gathering on the ground information.

The commissioner toured Darwin Navy Base HMAS Coonawarra last week, and today heis expected to visitRAAF Base Tindal, near Katherine.

As with the previous six locations where the commission has held hearings, the next two weeks in Darwinwill look to learn more about the challenges facing veterans and defence personnel in the local community.

Mr Kaldas said looking at the challenges of geographic isolation for veterans in the Northern Territoryand access to services would be at the forefront of the commission's work over the next fortnight.

Mr Weston said the tyranny of distance was complicated by the territory's relatively small population.

"There's not enough psychologists, there's not enough doctors to deal with all of us," he said.

Former defence personnel and their families have made more than2,500 submissions to the royal commission since it was established in 2021.

But 514 of those submissions have only been received since the commission handed down its interim report two months ago.

Among those who have noticed the uptick in submissions is senior solicitor Rachael Vincent of the Defence and Veterans Legal Service.

The organisation has supported more than 400 people since the commission began, and Ms Vincent said that number seemed likely to grow.

"We have noticed a lot more interest in: 'How can I have my story heard? What are my options?'There's a lot of people that have said to me all of these issues in the interim report are all issues that we've been saying for years," she said.

"So, I think that acknowledgement that the commission is listening, and that is really encouraging."

With its large defence bases, Darwin is also attracting more submissions from current members of the ADF.

While only 18 per cent of submissions to the royal commission have come from currently serving members nationwide, 26 of Darwin's 57 submissions are from people presently employed in Defence.

Mr Tellamsaid he hoped the commission will at least give him and other suicide survivors some catharsis.

"[To] put things to bed, put the ghosts away back in cupboard and lock them up throw away the key. That's the reason I am doing it, I need to get this off my chest."

GOP secretary of state nominees will appear at event with Lara Logan, who pushes antisemitic conspiracy theories – Media Matters for America

Posted: at 10:13 am

Republican secretary of state nominees from Arizona, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Mexico, and Nevada are scheduled to attend an election integrity forum moderated by former CBS News correspondent and Fox Nation host Lara Logan this weekend. Those candidates are associating with a far-right conspiracy theorist who has repeatedly pushed antisemitic conspiracy theories about Jewish people supposedly trying to manipulate American events, from the Civil War to the assassination of presidents.

New Mexico secretary of state candidate Audrey Trujillo recently announced that her campaign would host a New Mexico Election Integrity Forum on October 15 featuring Logan. The event will feature election-denying secretary of state candidates who have a history of promoting toxic rhetoric and conspiracy theories, including in the media: Rayla Campbell (Massachusetts); Mark Finchem (Arizona); Kristina Karamo (Michigan); Jim Marchant (Nevada); and Trujillo.

Campbell is a QAnon supporter. Finchem posted QAnon propaganda on the white nationalist haven Gab. Karamo hosted an anti-LGBTQ podcast and claimed Beyonce, Cardi B, and other musicians are tools of Satan. Marchant has forwarded bizarre conspiracy theories about a global cabal stealing elections. And Trujillo has claimed that Democrats and the deep state create school shootings so that they can make people fearful and take away our guns.

Other than Campbell, all of those candidates are part of Marchants America First Secretary of State Coalition, whichfalsely claimsthat Donald Trump won the 2020 election and works with QAnon influencers. They and Logan are also connected to QAnon influencer Juan O. Savin, who has pushed conspiracy theories about 9/11 and the 2017 Las Vegas mass shooting.

The New Mexico event is the latest election-denying event for Logan, who has traveled across the country moderating such events in places including Arizona, Florida, Kansas, Ohio, and Texas.

Loganhas increasingly associated with the QAnon community. She has also pushed numerous far-right conspiracy theories this year. Among them:

Logan has continued pushing fringe claims in recent weeks.

During a September 19 video to her Locals.com channel, Logan said people came to the United States in 1776 because they were purportedly escaping the reach of the Rothschilds and, you know, the central bankers of today. She then proceeded to claim that the Illuminati -- a secret society that is frequently the focus of global conspiracy theories -- were able to infiltrate the country through seminaries and then suggested that the same model has been used to control government, schools, corporations, and the media.

Augmenting the past to appeal to new museum audiences – ArtsHub

Posted: at 10:13 am

In September this year, the Northern Territory (NT) Chinese Museum installed a virtual reality display which constituted the first significant rehang for the institution in over a decade.

It is the first revamp since 2007, notwithstanding the updating of family tree scrolls in 2010, is designed to bring the attention of the museum to a wider audience and provide a post-COVID reboot.

At the centre of this reboot is the new exhibition, Family Murmurings: Fragments of Australian Chinese Life, which also signals a change of direction in museum programing through the introduction of contemporary art.

Resident historian at the NT Chinese Museum, Neville Jones, said: [The] paintings are inspired by the short stories written by Kenneth Chan [and] the viewer can don 3D goggles and take a virtual reality step into the paintings.

The nine vibrant vignettes and virtual environments immerse viewers in the childhood recollections of the author. Aspects of Sydney during the 1950s and 1960s are vividly recreated in his modern tales, illustrated by the visual artist Nancy Liang, and modelled by digital artist Oliver Clifton.

Dr Kenneth Chan was born in a foreign occupied Shanghai, to a Chinese Australian father who had emigrated from Darwin in 1928. His family operated a general store and tailoring business on Cavenagh Street, in Darwins Chinatown, prior to its demise in the 1942 bombings.

Through the nine short stories represented in this exhibition, Dr Chan attempted to capture the essence of growing up both Chinese and Australian in a White Australia, which favoured the quiet assimilation of its migrants.

While turning to VR has been a new venture for Dr Chan, he has long been interested in cross-cultural storytelling and history. Before Dr Chan undertook a creative writing course at the University of Canberra, he was a member of the Refugee Review Tribunal, a diplomat and the Administer of the Cocos Islands.

Distinct from a memoir or biography, there is an accessibility afforded by his employment of the genre, both to him as an author and the audience. Dr Chan has said that freedom from stick[ing] to the accuracy of the facts has enabled him to construct powerful allegories extrapolated from fragments of memor[ies], with an array of characters with which Chinese Australians might identify.

The painted compositions are deceptively simple and decidedly modern in style. Through nuanced gradations of colour, Liangs illustrations also captures an atmosphere of post-war optimism. Her landscapes and interiors investigate locations of significance to the Chinese community in Sydney, such as the iconic Trocadero on George Street where debutant balls and weddings were staged.

However, reference is also made to the Shanghai experienced by the father of the author in the 1930s. Dr Chan was in his early childhood when his family migrated to Australia. The situation of these paintings and the VR headsets amongst remnants from an older China is a masterstroke in curatorship.

Although well preserved from the point of acquisition, the collection in this museum is unique amongst its Australian counterparts because many of the artefacts are salvage from its Chinatown.

In commemoration for the 50th anniversary of bombing of Darwin in 1942, the Chung Wah Society assembled an exhibition, components of which were curated by Glynis Diamond into the groundbreaking Sweet and Sour, shown at the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory (MAGNT) in 1996.

This exhibition received applause from the Chinese Australian museum community, yet was met with a palpable local resistance, the latter of which manifested in both parliamentary debate and a critical exhibition review.

Irrespective, the NT Chinese Museum was established in the late 1990s in the Chung Wah Society headquarters, which was built on land exchanged for parts of the old Chinatown in the 1940s, and adjacent to a temple built in 1887.

Read: How museums can stay relevant in the 21st Century

The NT museum is preceded by the Museum of Chinese History in Melbourne and the Golden Dragon Museum in Bendigo, and with the forthcoming Museum of Chinese in Australia in Sydney (opening in 2023), collectively they chart an integral chapter in Australian history and life both past and present..

Whilst introducing contemporary art content will bring the programing of the NT Chinese Museum in line with its counterparts, the institution remains unique in its standing of significance within its own community.

Aside from being a repository of a Chinatown, which was never restored, the NT Chinese population is relatively younger but was significantly larger per capita during the 19th century.

After having been recruited by the NT Government in 1874, to meet a chronic shortfall in labour, the ratio of Chinese to European settlers swelled to eight to one by the end of that decade.

Bearing witness to the industriousness of a people reputed for working night and day, seven days a week, the museum collection includes brass and ivory scales, granite flour milling equipment, and an improvised wire basket used to transport live pigs. However, it is the displays dedicated towards the Chinese Australians who served in World War II which are the most striking, evidencing the significant contribution the community has made to the NT cultural landscape.

Federation and the enactment of the White Australia Policy saw the repatriation of many Chinese residents in the NT, like Dr Chans grandfather and father. In 2021 the community constituted only three percent of the overall population.

Although the NT Chinese Museum, according to Jones, has always had a dedicated band of volunteers [who] were already senior citizens at the commencement of COVID-19, the museum continues to grow in its vision, testament by this new exhibition and rehang.

Family Murmurings: Fragments of Australian Chinese Life is currently on show at the NT Chinese Museum in Darwin. The institution reopened after a pandemic-imposed hiatus by appointment only.

The collaboration was originally staged at the Museum of Chinese History (Melbourne) between 31 January 30 March.

Hard-hit citrus industry in Florida will mean higher consumer prices – FreshPlaza.com

Posted: October 15, 2022 at 5:13 pm

Consumers in Florida and across the US should expect the price of Florida oranges, grapefruits and processed products to increase as a direct response to the ravages of Hurricane Ian. Yesterday, the USDA released the initial citrus crop forecast for the 2022-23 season, but that survey was taken before the hurricane. The forecast includes a decrease in Florida orange, grapefruit and specialty crop (mostly tangerines and tangelos) production.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the Florida all orange forecast, at 28.0 million boxes (1.26 million tons), was down 32 percent from last season's final utilization. Navel varieties were forecast down 40 percent from last season and the Valencia orange forecast was down 25 percent.

The industry has struggled for years with issues such as deadly citrus-greening disease, and the surveys found trees showing smaller-sized fruit and fewer oranges per tree. After the hurricane, further production decreases will likely mean even more scarcity and increased prices at the grocery store.

Florida Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried released a statement saying: "As we move forward in the wake of this disaster, rest assured that I remain steadfast in my support of our Florida citrus growers. And my department remains committed to innovation in the face of the ongoing challenges of weather events like Ian, citrus greening and unfair trade practices. It is heartbreaking to see such an iconic Florida industry hurting right now."

Fried said that the current citrus forecast, surveyed prior to Hurricane Ian, will be an invaluable baseline for growers, processors, packers and government in predicting additional crop loss. A December forecast will reflect updated inspections of groves.

Chorley teen with Asperger’s selected to represent the UK in judo at Virtus Games in Australia – Lancashire Evening Post

Posted: at 5:13 pm

Joshuha Hodkinson, 18, who was diagnosed with Asperger's five year's ago, was inspired to take up the sport after he lost an 'uphill' battle with his sister Chloe, 17, and will now attend the Virtus Ocenia Asia Games 2022 next month in Brisbane.

The sporting event, which will take place from November 5-11, is an international multi-sport competition for elite athletes with an intellectual impairment.

Competing in various competitions, Joshuha has given his Asperger's a kick to rise up the judo ranks, collecting numerous awards as he goes.

He said: "I first started at Trowbridge Budokwai in 2012 as my dad encouraged me to start a sport as my sister Chloe and I fought on a nearby hill called the White Horse and she beat me up!

"So from a few weeks after that, I started judo and haven't stopped.

"I have competed an uncountable amount of times, some notable titles I have had is, Ben van der Eng (BENG) Adaptive World Judo Games champion three years in a row.

"It was cancelled in 2020/21 due to Covid - so I won in 2022, 2019 and 2018.

"I have also been Adaptive British Champion multiple times and Adaptive British Schools Champion also.

"Judo allows me to forget whatever has happened in the day, and allows me to clear my mind by focussing on doing judo.
