Texas man sentenced to 10 years for operating human smuggling … – U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Newsroom

Posted: at 12:24 am

HOUSTON A judge ordered a Houston man to serve 10 years in federal prison Aug. 1 for organizing a human smuggling ring where he recruited and directed others to transport unlawfully present noncitizens into the interior of the United States.

The investigation that led to the conviction and sentencing was conducted by Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) Houston and the U.S. Border Patrol.

Charles Lee Smith, 55, was sentenced in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Texas to 10 years in federal prison to be immediately followed by three years of supervised release for conspiracy to transport unlawfully present noncitizens. Smith pleaded guilty to the charges on Dec. 1, 2021.

The investigation showed that from Feb. 26, 2021, through Sept. 14, 2021, Smith recruited others to illegally transport noncitizens from Laredo, Texas, to San Antonio, Houston and other destinations. Smith acquired and paid for the load vehicles, as well as travel expenses and lodging for the drivers he recruited. In total, the investigation showed that Smith supervised the transport of approximately 182 noncitizens, including six unaccompanied minors.

The investigation also showed that on Dec. 8, 2020, law enforcement officials apprehended as he personally transported three non-U.S. citizens. After that incident, he began recruiting others to drive.

On Sept. 9, 2021, Smith met Brandon Joseph Bartholomew, a 40-year-old resident of Magnolia, and hired and contracted him for $10,000 to transport semitractor-trailers loaded with non-U.S. citizens from Laredo to Houston. Smith told Bartholomew he would be able to take multiple loads that week.

On Sep. 14, 2021, Bartholomew drove a semitractor-trailer to the U.S. Border Patrol checkpoint near Freer. He told authorities he was hauling rice and beans and presented a fraudulent bill of lading. Upon inspection, officials discovered the logos and Department of Transportation number printed on the tractor and trailer were fraudulent. Authorities cut the trailer door seal and discovered 49 unlawfully present noncitizens from Mexico, El Salvador and Guatemala. The temperature inside the enclosed trailer was 91 degrees F. On April 19, 2022, Bartholomew was sentenced to 33 months in federal prison.

Smith will remain in custody pending transfer to a U.S. Bureau of Prisons facility to be determined in the near future.

The Texas Department of Public Safety assisted with the investigation into the other individuals involved in illegally transporting noncitizens. Former Assistant U.S. Attorney Matthew Isaac prosecuted this case. Assistant U.S. Attorney Colton Turner handled the sentencing.

Reward offered in Kellogg vandalism – Shoshone News Press

Posted: at 12:24 am

KELLOGG The Kellogg Police Department is investigating the attempted break-in and vandalism of the brand new drinking fountain/water bottle fill station at the new Teeters Field concession stand.

According to KPD Chief Paul Twidt, the incident occurred sometime between July 23 and July 27.

One of the features that came with the $3,000 combo water fountain/fill station is a small LED screen that informs the users of how many bottles-worth of water has been distributed Which appeared to be the main target of the perpetrators attack.

Twidt also mentioned that on or around the same time, someone attempted to break into the concession stands metal roll-up door. While they were unable to gain entry to the brand-new facility, the rubber seal and door were damaged.

According to Twidt, security cameras were set to be installed earlier this week, just days after the incident(s) took place.

Twidt was made aware of the situation last Friday and immediately went to work establishing a time frame to help with the investigation. Thankfully, the city has been hard at work trying to get the new concession stand fully operational by the time fall athletics resume at Teeters, so there were several people who had worked on the building who were able to tell Twidt that the damage wasnt done prior to July 23.

Thousands of people had been in Kellogg for both the Kellogg High School all-class reunion as well as the SilverHoops 3-on-3 basketball tournament both events majorly centered around Teeters Field, but Twidt has been able to rule out the possibility of the damage happening during either event which leads him to believe that the perpetrator is a local and all the more disappointing.

Based upon when we were called and the reports we have from people working on finishing the stand, it happened sometime after all-class and before 3-on-3, he told the News-Press. So I think that really reduces the possibility of it being someone from out of town, which is really frustrating that someone from here would potentially do that.

Twidt put out a post on social media offering a reward for anyone with knowledge of the perpetrator(s), and while dealing with vandalism isnt new for the chief, its the location that really has him and many others up in arms.

The work theyve done up there at the concession stand is very nice, the water station was really nice, he said. Theres just no rhyme or reason for this. Theres no money in the water fountain, or the concession stand. This was just someone being destructive for the sake of being destructive. Its just a shame.

The city of Kellogg, largely through donated time, materials, and funds, has made more than a million dollars in upgrades at Teeters Field all of which are expected to be completed by this fall.

KPD is offering up to a $1,000 reward for any information leading to the prosecution of those involved.

If you have any information on this crime, please call the Kellogg Police Department at (208) 784-1131.

Nearby waters a white shark hot spot | Inquirer and Mirror – The Inquirer and Mirror

Posted: at 12:24 am

(Aug. 3, 2023) The first ever scientific estimate of white shark abundance in the waters off Cape Cod shows its not just a habitat, its a hot spot.

The study, led by the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy, estimated that 800 individual white sharks cruised through the waters from 2015 to 2018.

We knew there were a lot of white sharks here, but to see that it compares with some of the largest white shark hot spots in the world was a surprise, said Megan Winton, the studys lead author.

From a conservation perspective it was really good news. The species in the western North Atlantic was knocked down really hard in the sixties and seventies and its a conservation success story to see them coming back.

The study used video tags to collect nearly 3,000 videos of 393 individual white sharks which helped identify individual sharks based on markings and notches on their dorsal fins, but it also allowed researchers to witness hours of footage of the elusive sharks.

One thing is very clear to Winton: many of the white sharks are here to feed on seals, spending almost half their time in waters 15 feet deep or less. They look to position themselves between the seals on land and the nearby fish that the seals need to get to.

While this might sound scary given its the same shallow waters people are swimming in during the summer, its also a testament to how efficient white sharks are as hunters, Winton said.

Shark attacks on humans are extremely rare. The University of Florida listed the odds of dying of a shark attack in the United States at 1 in 264.1 million.

The camera tag footage has been really enlightening, Winton said. Weve seen instances of sharks investigating things (birds onthe surface, lobster buoys). Theyre very curious animals, theyre also cautious animals. Theyre not these eating machines out there just biting stuff all the time.

The study tagged hundreds of white sharks over a four-year period, and although Nantucket was outside of the studys tagging zones, many of the tags ended up around the island, Winton said. Great Point is a known seal and white shark hot spot. Given the abundance of both in the area the Trustees closed the beaches in the area to swimming this summer.

The tags come up to the surface when they detach from a shark and we have to go physically recover them, Winton said. Many of those tags wed have to pick up off the coast of Nantucket. Part of that is currents, but we know that the sharks move down there and they move all around.

The study also showed there is a lot of turnover in the white sharks that do visit Cape Cod in the summer. Just like people, there are some that visit every summer, like a white shark researchers dubbed Mr. Frisky, while others just make a quick pit stop.

Mr. Frisky, (yes Winton acknowledged, they have some goofy nicknames for the sharks) has been a regular around the Cape every summer since 2017, but last summer they didnt see him or getany pings from his tag. They worried it might have been the end of Mr. Frisky. But then they got a message from some of their collaborators in Canada that Mr. Friskys tag had been pinging up there all summer.

We had some sharks that we had long thought of as our resident sharks, that we would see every summer, she said. And theres also a lot of sharks that are just these kind of transient sharks, that pass through the area, stop and get a snack (a seal) and move on. But what we see now is that there seems to be a shift in our resident sharks after a period of a few years.

According to the data from the study, the white shark population around the Cape reaches its peak from late August to early October. They also noted that the number of white sharks increased yearly throughout the study, with the largest numbers coming in the final year.

The study, An open spatial capture-recapture framework for estimating the abundance and seasonal dynamics of white sharks at aggregation sites was published in the journalMarine Ecology Progress SeriesJuly 27. It included scientists from the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy as well as UMass Dartmouths School for Marine Science and Technology and the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries.

CJ Logistics teams up with ONE as strategic partner – India Shipping News

Posted: at 12:24 am

SEOUL : CJ Logistics, South Koreas largest third-party logistics provider, signed a collaboration agreement with Ocean Network Express (ONE) on 3 August, a month after sealing similar pacts with other carriers such as Evergreen Marine Corporation and SM Line.

The liner operators hope to increase cargo volumes through CJ Logistics network, while the latter aims to secure competitive freight rates.

CJ Logistics and ONE have also agreed to work together to secure container volumes to and from Asia, and to develop sea-land integrated transportation services. The plan is to jointly develop additional services such as the end-to-end services to deliver containers from shippers to receivers via land and sea.

Particularly,CJ Logistics eyes business from THE Alliance, of which ONE is a member. Hapag-Lloyd, HMM, Yang Ming are other member of THE Alliance.

The collaboration with ONE means that CJ Logistics has secured links with members of two of the three major container shipping alliances.

In late June, CJ Logistics said it was hoping to gain more cargoes from the Ocean Alliance after signing a similar agreement with alliance member Evergreen. CMA CGM, COSCO Shipping Lines, and OOCL are the other alliance members.

CJ Logistics stated that the alliance members are ocean-going liner operators that each have competitive advantages in certain ports and routes. Securing these collaborations therefore mean a wider range of options for CJ Logistics in the global container shipping market, creating an opportunity to enhance its competitiveness.

The fashionable riviera the Danes want to keep to themselves – The Times

Posted: at 12:24 am

Early morning on the beach at Liseleje, north of Copenhagen, an elderly couple in dressing gowns walk hand-in-hand to the shore, disrobe and enter the sea (no flinching) for a naked immersion. It seems to be a local ritual as others follow suit (sans suits). Its a vigorous start to the day the North Sea is about 18 degrees and my 14-month-old, Lyra, noisily objects to dipping in even her toes, but its a refresher. And thats why we are here and not, thankfully, sweltering in southern Europe.

I didnt fancy the heat, the sweat and the stress of sun-creaming a moving target who refuses to wear a hat. A friend who lives in Copenhagen told me the Danish Riviera, as this stretch of coast in North Sealand is known, is great for families with plenty to do in all weathers (summer here is much like our own changeable and anorak-friendly), lovely stretches of beach, and a gentle, pastoral landscape.

It is also accessible Liseleje is our first stop, about an hours drive from Copenhagen airport. Its a favourite among Copenhageners too and the village is busy with Stokke prams and casual-boho families (even the rubber rings come in chic shades all very hygge) when we visit in July.

A room at Liseleje Badehotel

STUDIODESIGN

One Danish family we meet have brought their three children to the Liseleje Badehotel, where we are staying, for the past three years. Summer houses are a big thing in Denmark, but badehotels (bathing hotels) are having a resurgence, and this one has been newly refurbished by a Danish/Norwegian couple, Dorte and Paul. It was a fishermans house and still has a simplicity; that easy-on-the-eye Danish aesthetic that seems effortless (neutral striped wallpaper, tongue-and-groove panelling).

The rooms are in a one-storey building, in the style of a US motel, opening on to a slim, sheltered deck and shared garden blooming with pink roses. Here coffee or wine is drunk, books read (in theory in my case) and children overseen as they communicate in international squeals. Dorte and Paul host small concerts and barbecues. Dinner is in the excellent restaurant Mamas & Tapas (the couple once lived near Malaga), which welcomes children, supplying ours with a high chair (vintage style, naturally). The food has a Scandi twist the salmon comes from Norway and the bread comes with Lurpak.

The beach at Liseleje

MARIUS KARLSSON

The dune-backed beach that draws the early morning dippers is less than a five-minute walk down a path lined with wild flowers. Its windy on our visit better suited to kite-surfers than swimmers. Once sandcastle-splatting and rosehip-plucking has been exhausted, theres pretty Liseleje to wander. Theres a stylish interiors boutique, Liseleje Beach House (striped beach bags for about 32), and thatched-cottage gardens filled with flouncy hollyhocks, lupins and borage. Its as charming as Rye and as spotless as Nantucket. The neighbouring forest with its wide cycle paths is walkable from the village.

This stretch of coast has pavement appeal. To the west (a 15-minute drive from Liseleje) is the coastal village of Kikhavn, which feels like a set designed by Hans Christian Andersen more thatched cottages with fairytale windows and a stall selling lavender posies and beaded bracelets. Its an easy coastal walk from here, even with a buggy, to the home of the explorer Knud Rasmussen, the first European to cross the Northwest Passage by dog sled. He came here to write and presumably spend long periods staring out to sea from his perfectly positioned window seat (9; knudrasmus.dk).

Further south in Lynaes, theres a buzzy, youthful scene thanks to two locals, the twins Jeppe and Johan Ingversen, who set up a surf centre with a campsite (sauna-like cabins and canvas tents), relaxed caf and restaurant overlooking the harbour. They started the business aged 19 and their restaurant, the Food Bar, is a great spot for coffee, cocktails or pizza plus there is a playground opposite (pizzas from 11; surfcenter.dk).

To the east (a 20-minute drive from Liseleje), theres upmarket Tisvildeleje with its antique shop selling vintage Royal Copenhagen crockery behind the petrol station and a row of dress shops and bars (rhubarb summer spritzes from 11; cocks-andcows.dk) leading down to a lifeguarded beach. Driving along the coast to Sealands northernmost town, Gilleleje, look out for the slim, striped bathing huts on Rageleje, which are dismantled each year at the end of the season.

Boats in the harbour at Gilleleje

ALAMY

We time our visit to Gilleleje for an alfresco fish and chip supper Lyra is popular with the pigeons and gulls on the harbour at busy Adamsens (fish and chips 11; adamsensfisk.dk).

When the beach is too windy (or wet), theres Tothaven, a farm and brilliantly family-friendly day out close to Kikhavn. The goats (as well as the homemade ice cream) are met with arm-flapping glee from Lyra (tickets 6, under-twos free; tothaven.dk).

Denmark travel guide

And on the east side of Sealand theres the gallery with perhaps the most all-round appeal of any Ive visited. Not only does the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art have a great collection (Bacon, Picasso, Warhol), a wonderful sculpture park (Henry Moore, Alexander Calder) and a dedicated childrens wing with daily workshops, visitors can go for a swim (which we do) at the beach below (17; louisiana.dk).

Thanks to our cost-of-living crisis, eating out in Denmark no longer feels quite so expensive and it is generally excellent. Plus our daughter is welcome, even in the smarter places (the trick is a 6pm table). Lunch in the elegant greenhouse with a view of the pony field at Rabarbergaarden (rhubarb garden) in Vejby near Tisvilde is delicious (potato open sandwich, freshest hake; mains from 13; rabarbergaarden.dk). As is dinner in Skipperhuset by Lake Esrum in Fredensborg where the restaurant ripples with reflections from the lake and the childrens menu is as delicious as the adults (mains from 16; skipperhuset.dk).

We stay the night after dinner at Mangholm farm. Here, the owners, Tine and Torben, have created a farm-to-table restaurant that is hyperlocal. We eat courgette in a light tempura batter from their garden, bread from grain grown in their fields, and a Roman-inspired beef stew from their cattle (five-course tasting menu from 63; mangholm.dk). Thrillingly, especially for Lyra, chickens and kittens wander past the restaurant windows. The farm supplies veg to some of Copenhagens top restaurants, Alchemist and Selma among them, and they use old techniques, leaving harmless weeds, for example. The couple fell in love with it because there is history in the landscape, Tine says. There has been a farm here since 1778, and they have found Stone Age tools.

We are the first guests to sleep in their new garden house (there is also a rustic forest cabin). The two-bedroom cottage, built by a Dutch couple when they got stuck here during the pandemic, is in a wildflower meadow and has been kitted out with rustic Danish flair: a gingham counter curtain in the kitchen, Hay dressing gowns in the bedroom and the dinkiest cot our daughter has slept in. Its cosy and calm with views on to wild grasses; a thin Danish flag flickers in the distance.

The forest cabin at Mangholm farm

It is glamping, though, and the bathroom is in the main barn next to the restaurant, so we shower in the evening listening to the chefs techno music as they clean the kitchen. But its wonderfully homely a breakfast of freshly boiled eggs, warm sourdough and homemade granola and jams is delivered to our door in a basket and you cant say that of many top-end restaurants.

Unique but understated seems to be a theme of the Danish Riviera its no wonder the Danes have been keeping it to themselves.

Jenny Coad was a guest of Visit North Sealand (visitnorthsealand.com) and Visit Denmark (visitdenmark.com). B&B doubles at Liseleje Badehotel from 184 (liselejebadehotel.dk), and in the garden house Mangholm farm from 206 (mangholm.dk). Fly to Copenhagen

Wands and Wizards Faire participants in Pickerington.

The county-wide festival began in 2018 as a literacy encouragement effort by way of the Harry Potter book series. Thanks to community and local business excitement and participation, the efforts evolved into a three-day event in which establishments transform into whimsical, magical and wizardly destinations that offer everything from potion making to costume contests.

Executive Director of Visit Fairfield County and the events organizer Jonett Haberfield tells CityBeat that the weekend historically attracts a few thousand people. Five communities participate in the wizardly weekend including Lancaster, Pickerington, Lithopolis, Carroll and Baltimore.

Wands and Wizards is headquartered at the Fairfield County Visitors Center, where activities and information like an all-encompassing weekend guide will be available. Another main attraction, Haberfield says, is the transformation of the Fairfield County District Library into a Harry Potter book; the library is also hosting a Dobby Sock Drive.

They transform the three-story library into a Harry Potter book, Haberfield says. And there are things happening every day that are themed and that's where a lot of the real serious Harry Potter stuff happens. Then there are other places like in Pickerington, they're doing a big Wizard Fair, which is more along the Renaissance Festival side of things. Theyll have a lot of entertainment and it's an outdoor event.

The Wands and Wizards Weekend boasts entertainment like scavenger hunts, pub crawls, trivia, nature education, magical creature hunts, wand and magic orb making, unique drinks and eats from local restaurants, fantasy book art, jewelry making, plantology and thats just a handful of the activities taking place throughout the weekend.

Businesses such as breweries, museums, libraries and specialty shops and restaurants will participate, like the Decorative Arts Center of Ohio, the Ohio Glass Museum, the Heartland Farm, the Sherman House Museum, Double Edge Brewing Co. and Farmers Country Store.

It really just depends on what day you're coming because it's three days, Haberfield says. So there are different activities every day. It really just kind of depends on what day somebody is able to be here as to what they will experience.

Visitors can download the Fairfield County App for more details about the weekend.

VIP (Very Important Professor) packages are also available and enhance the experience with food and drink vouchers, merchandise and bonus items from participating stores, goodie bags and various discounts. There are also packages that include overnight stays in nearby hotels and also day-trip amenities.

10 DC Comics The Superman & Lois TV Show Never Adapted – CBR – Comic Book Resources

Posted: at 12:23 am

Superman & Lois is one of the CW's best superhero series based on the extensive library of DC Comics. Primarily taking inspiration from Superman's Rebirth run, the show has adapted some of the best modern stories revolving around the Man of Steel. Many have praised the series as one of the most faithful depictions of Superman, second only to Christopher Reeve's iconic portrayal of him.

Superman & Lois made a great choice in using Superman's Rebirth run as a template for the show, but this has left many stories untouched. Presenting Superan at his best and pitting him against his greatest enemies, comics like Superman & The Authority and "Superman: Brainiac" would be welcome additions to Superman & Lois' overarching plot.

One of Alan Moore's best known DC stories as well as the most memorable of his Superman tales "For the Man Who Has Everything" introduced the Black Mercy. The parasitic cosmic organism fed on the Man of Steel's life force and placed him in a dream state, where it gave him everything he wanted.

"For the Man Who Has Everything" is one of Moore's most revisited stories, and countless heroes have had to contend with the organism and its illusions. The story could have made for a brilliant done-in-one episode for Superman & Lois, letting audiences catch a glimpse at the CW's take on Krypton.

Superman and the Authority symbolized what may well have been Grant Morrison's final story for the Man of Steel. It also teamed the Man of Steel with the recently famous Authority, the main superhero of the Wildstorm universe. Superman and the Authority went head-to-head with the Ultra-Humanite, a genius super villain in the body of an albino gorilla.

Superman and the Authority is a recent story, but it released during Superman & Lois' first season, meaning the writers had time to introduce the gritty team to the CW. With a fourth season on the way and the Authority slated for DCEU projects, it could be a great place to introduce the team.

Whether Batman would have been involved in the arc or not, the basic idea behind Public Enemies deserves a live action adaptation. The story depicted a world where Lex Luthor became President of the United States, and sent a team of government superheroes to hunt down Batman and Superman.

A Public Enemies arc could have shown how Superman would contend with a government working against him, and could have been a good introduction for the characters from the original arc. The likes of Captain Atom and Major Force would prove interesting enemies as they hunt down Superman & Lois' Man of Steel to bring him in.

"Superman: Brainiac" was the reintroduction of Superman's classic android villain to the DCU under Geoff Johns' brilliant run of Action Comics. The story begins in the past, with Brainiac stealing the city of Kandor from Krypton, followed by the present-based arrival of a Brainiac probe.

"Brainiac" would work brilliantly as Brainiac's introduction to Superman & Lois, and could send Clark on a cosmic adventure to the villain's ship. It would also allow for some in-universe exploration of Kryptonian history and culture, as Superman eventually finds his way to Kandor.

Superman: Year One is a relatively divisive Elseworlds miniseries that followed Clark Kent's origin as Superman. He went from a young boy to a Navy SEAL and then the hero everyone knows him as. However, for many, it was a disappointing spin on the hero's early life.

Superman: Year One had aspects that could have worked as an origin for the CW's Superman. It was far darker than the average Superman & Lois episode, but the series has never shied away from depicting a stern, serious Man of Steel. Flashback scenes could in the fourth season could definitely pull from this Frank Miller Elseworlds tale.

Superman: Last Son is a fantastic collaboration between Geoff Johns and Superman II director Richard Donner. The story follows Superman and Lois' adoption of a Kryptonian boy and the subsequent attack from Zod and his fellow soldiers. It was one of the best stories depicting the duo as parents.

Superman: Last Son could have made for Superman & Lois' best story arc, in large part because of Richard Donner's involvement. Superman & Lois has already delved deep into Kryptonian lore, and even a loose Last Son adaptation would deepen that lore tremulously and expand the Kryptonian cast of characters.

The Rebirth era of Superman has served as the primary inspiration for Superman & Lois, thanks to its bright, optimistic view of the hero. However, not all of the run is a great fit for Superman. One of the best of these stories is "Imperius Lex," which explored both Superman and Luthor battling the forces of Darkseid on Apokolips.

"Imperius Lex" followed Superman and Luthor to Apokolips, on a quest for Luthor to claim rule over the hellish planet. Disappointingly, Lex Luthor hasn't appeared beyond one brief cameo at the end of Superman & Lois' third season. Should Lex return, fans would love to see him resemble the space-traveling, tech-heavy villain he is in "Imperius Lex."

While elements of All-Star Superman can be found in Superman & Lois (due to the story's impact on the hero), the overall story hasn't featured in the series. Considering comic chronicled the last days of a dying Man of Steel, its omission so far certainly makes sense.

All-Star Superman is effectively the definitive Superman story, but only makes sense as a heartfelt conclusion to the tale of Clark Kent. The series has been renewed for a fourth season, but whenever the curtains finally close on Superman & Lois, an All-Star Superman tribute would be an excellent way to close out the show.

Superman: Man of Tomorrow was a brief run of digital first Superman comics. Easily one of the most overlooked creative runs on the Man of Steel, the story followed a slew of adventures for Superman in Metropolis that explored the hero's diverse rogues gallery.

Superman: Man of Tomorrow wouldn't have made for one continuous arc, but following an arc per episode could've been any exciting formula for Superman & Lois. Fans enjoy the one-shot nature from time to time, and using Man of Tomorrow as a template would have made for a richer exploration of the hero's world than the story-per-season template allows.

"The Warworld Saga" is perhaps the most difficult Superman comic to adapt into live-action, due to its high fantasy nature and intense battle sequences. For this reason, it's doubtful even big budget movies would faithfully adapt the storyline to film, let alone a CW series.

However, a more budget-friendly adaptation could definitely work. "The Warworld Saga," despite being new, is already a modern classic for the hero. The story follows Superman and the Authority as they travel to Warworld in a bid to end the tyrannical rule of Mongul following a series of attacks the villain launched on Earth. This gritty and intense comic would make for a memorable arc that changes the pace on Superman & Lois.
