Alan Turing – Video
Alan Turing Alan Mathison Turing, OBE, FRS (ˈtjʊərɪŋ/ TEWR-ing; 23 June 1912 — 7 June 1954), was a British mathematician, logician, cryptanalyst, and computer scientist. He was highly influential in the development of computer science, giving a formalisation of the concepts of “algorithm” and “computation” with the Turing machine, which can be considered a model of a general purpose computer. Turing is widely considered to be the father of computer science and artificial intelligence. Continue reading
Futurist's Cheat Sheet: Artificial Intelligence
There is no more powerful concept in futurist writings then the notion of artificial intelligence. The ability for humans to create machine-based life that thinks on its own and acts on its own has the potential to make our lives dramatically better – or worse, depending on what kind of science fiction you read. But getting there won’t be easy Continue reading
Alan Turing to be Honored at Welsh Digital Arts Festival
Alan Turing, the pioneering British computer scientist regarded as the father of artificial intelligence, is being celebrated at this year’s blinc Digital contemporary digital arts festival in Wales to mark the 100th anniversary of his birth. The blinc festival, in its second year, will be held on the weekend of Oct. Continue reading
Ahead of his time, Turing's pardon is now long overdue
The Irish Times – Thursday, July 19, 2012 KARLIN LILLINGTON THE GREAT British mathematician, second World War codebreaker and computer scientist Alan Turing has become one of the heroes of modern computing for his challenging intellect, his intriguing insights into computing problems and artificial intelligence, and of course, his critical role at Britains Bletchley Park in cracking the devilishly complicated Enigma Machine code, which the Nazis used to encrypt messages during the war. Ultimately, he was treated atrociously by the very government he served so well despite the fact that the cracking of the Enigma code in particular is credited with shortening the length of the war and saving many millions of lives. He was prosecuted in 1952 under Britains old anti-homosexuality laws, and given the choice of prison or the humility of chemical castration with female hormone injections, choosing if this could even be viewed as a choice the latter Continue reading
Futurist: Computers to Outsmart Humans by 2029
Computers will soon be able to pass the Turing Test, convincing human judges that they too are humans, says Ray Kurzweil. Photo courtesy Chris Devers Kismet the robot at the MIT Museum Continue reading
IPsoft CEO Chetan Dube Asks: Can Machines Really Think?
NEW YORK–(BUSINESS WIRE)– As the world celebrates Turings 100th birthday, IPsoft, the leading independent provider of autonomic IT services, looks back on the developments made in artificial intelligence to date, and what the world will look like once humans and machines are equal in intelligence: Since the birth of computer science, man has been asking that question: Can machines really think? Some noteworthy philosophers have argued that artificial intelligence is impossible (Dreyfus), that it is immoral (Weizenbaum) and that the very concept of it is incoherent (Searle) Continue reading
Google Celebrates Alan Turing with a Turing Machine Doodle
Alan Turing is being honored with a Google doodle this weekend on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the birth of the pioneering British computer scientist and father of artificial intelligence. Continue reading
Alan Turing Google Doodle: Turing Machine Codebreaker Logo Honors Father of Computer Science
Alan Turing would have celebrated his 100th birthday today. Google honors the life and work of a man whose accomplishments were many; a brilliant academic and codebreaker, Turing is also known amongst computer scientists as the father of artificial intelligence. Little known in life, his work and its significance for computer science has only become notorious in recent decades. Continue reading
'A Perfect and Beautiful Machine': What Darwin's Theory of Evolution Reveals About Artificial Intelligence
Charles Darwin and Alan Turing, in their different ways, both homed in on the same idea: the existence of competence without comprehension. @FakeTV Some of the greatest, most revolutionary advances in science have been given their initial expression in attractively modest terms, with no fanfare. Charles Darwin managed to compress his entire theory into a single summary paragraph that a layperson can readily follow Continue reading

Is Our Definition Of Artificial Intelligence Wrong? “The annual Loebner competition, where participants attempt to show that a machine can pass for a human in conversation, is based on Alan Turing's theory that such a test would be an adequate demonstration of intelligence Continue reading
How the Turing Test inspired AI
21 June 2012 Last updated at 00:00 By Prof Noel Sharkey Artificial Intelligence, University of Sheffield Computer pioneer and artificial intelligence (AI) theorist Alan Turing would have been 100 years old this Saturday. To mark the anniversary the BBC has commissioned a series of essays. In this, the fourth article, his influence on AI research and the resulting controversy are explored. Continue reading

Artificial Intelligence: What happened to the hunt for thinking machines?
May 25, 2012, 4:48 AM PDT Takeaway: Mankind has long been fascinated by the idea of intelligent machines, but in the information age the sci-fi dream of creating a human-like AI appears increasingly anachronistic. The idea of creating a sentient machine has fascinated mankind for centuries Continue reading
