In 1948, Alfred Sellers was 24 years old, a returned veteran of the Battle of the Bulge, and a handful of credits shy of completing an interrupted pre-med degree at Temple University when he was accepted to start immediately at Duke Medical School. He went on to graduate first in his class and begin what would be a nearly 60-year career as a cardiologist and professor of medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, retiring four years ago at the age of 84.
