Years ago New Mexico historian Fray Angelico Chavez expressed the belief that in his native state there had long existed a special closeness between the divine and the human. New Mexico is Holy Land, he went so far as to suggest.

The arid mountains, mesas, and valleys along the upper Rio Grande, said Fray Angelico, resemble those of ancient Palestine. It is this biblical landscape, he believes, which through centuries has kept New Mexicos Hispanic people close to their God.
