Freedom boys win Pirate Invitational

CRYSTAL RIVER The Freedom boys had three of the top 10 finishers in winning the 11th annual Pirate Invitational at Crystal River High, the Patriots third title in four meets.

We come from a very competitive district; one of the toughest around. We had a high-mileage week coming in, said Freedom coach Tyson Graham, whose team had 43 points to edge Brooksville Nature Coast Technical (46). Today, I kind of cut them loose. Weve had a lot of problems in the first half of races, but our 6-7 runners carried it. Our strength is our 4-8 runners.

The Patriots highest finisher was senior Luke Haara, who placed fourth in 17:46.14.

Freedom freshman Alejandro Michel placed sixth in 18:06.99. Freedom also had the 10th-12th finishers in Richard Lush (18:25.74), Raymond Urbaniak (18:29.08) and Christian Shaffer (18:34.43).

Pasco Countys lone team entry, Wesley Chapel, saw sophomore Dominic Moreno place fifth in 17:57.15.

On the girls side, Wesley Chapel junior Amber Maxwell recorded the best time of any Pasco County runner, placing fourth in 21:01.87.

Riverview freshman records first victory

RUSKIN The W.D. Johnson Invitational at E.G. Simmons Park featured a course that was under water after overnight rain, but that didnt stop Riverview freshman Bailey Hertenstein from picking up her first win.

Brandons Eliana Ochoa led the pack through the first mile, with Hertenstein a few seconds back. With about a 1,000 meters to go, the two were side-by-side, and Hertenstein pulled away to win in 19:10 on a course that was shortened because of the conditions.
