Alex Zaharov-Reutt Thursday, 17 May 2012 19:00

    Your IT – Home IT

The Raspberry Pi computer board is the worlds most inexpensive yet incredibly useful, useable, configurable, programmable and extendable credit card sized, ARM powered PC, ready for students, engineers and anyone to unleash new levels of creativity and imagination!

In addition, it offers end users, students, engineers and anyone the ability to write software and make new hardware creations powered by the Raspberry Pi more easily than ever before, thanks to the easily expandability of the Pi hardware.

This means that if you want to add a touch-screen interface to the Pi, you can do it. If you want to use the Pi board as the brains of some kind of robot youre creating, you can do it.

Meanwhile, the Pi is perfect for students and classrooms, re-introducing the programming skills that children in the early 80s were learning in classrooms full of Apple II computers, skills that dont appear to be being taught in primary schools any more.

Indeed, the Raspberry Pi is so full of possibility, I imagine that it may well set off a Woz-like era of creativity once more, getting students, engineers and anyone in front of highly configurable and customisable technology that lets you do anything you want, just as Woz did in the late 70s when he was soldering together the first Apple I computer.

Sure, todays kids wont be soldering together the Pi computer board it comes already full made for the price but instead of kids just using apps that someone else has made, students can easily create their own apps running on their own hardware designs, unleashing new creativity with this being the true promise of the Raspberry Pi era.

Now that the Raspberry Pi has launched in Australia (and around the world), the biggest problem will be getting your hands on one.

Only 10,000 have been made so far, but there are already 300,000 pre-orders, with the floodgates now officially open for anyone to register their interest in buying one as soon as their spot opens up to make a binding, paid-for order.

Kontron’s HPEC super computer-like system matches military program needs for high-end processing

Poway, California – Kontron today announced that its high performance embedded computing (HPEC) platform was selected for an Editor’s Choice Award by Military Embedded Systems Magazine. The Kontron 18 blade VPX-based HPEC platform was chosen by the editors for their April-May 2012 issue because of its ability to meet military programs’ needs for high-end processing. This highly integrated HPEC platform was developed to supply an immense amount of power in a small footprint. Military Embedded Systems Magazine editors continually assess innovative new technologies and products as possible Editor’s Choice award recipients.

“Thwarting the old paradigm of military programs sacrificing performance or facing a proprietary technology path, the Kontron HPEC platform delivers 1.44 Teraflops of compute density,” on behalf of OpenSystems Media. “Described as a “supercomputer-like system” by the company, the DSP-suited HPEC platform comprises 18 of Kontron’s VX6060 Core i7 2 GHz (or more) computing nodes including 8 GB DDR3 memory on each board, in addition to 36 tightly coupled processors within the HPEC platform. Several switched fabric interconnects are housed in the backplane. And the 19-inch footprint HPEC platform is suited to radar, SIGINT, sonar, and video processing needs of UAV or aircraft programs.”

The Kontron HPEC Platform Using the strengths of Kontron’s substantial system and board-level platform expertise along with its experience in design and deployment of ruggedized systems for defense programs, the Kontron HPEC platform meets the needs of compute-intensive DSP-based systems. It is a VPX-based super computer-like system that accommodates up to 18 Kontron 6U VPX VX6060′s, powered by Dual Intel Core i7 processor computing nodes, and employs 36 tightly coupled processors. Using an innovative VXFabric approach, which is a simplified API that Kontron developed to help accelerate the design process, Kontron’s new HPEC platform allows high-speed socket-based communication between blades by using multiple switched fabric interconnects within the backplane. The 72 core, 18-blade Kontron HPEC platform provides a breakthrough in compute density, up to 1.44 Teraflops (1.44 Trillion Floating Point Operation per second) in a small 19-inch footprint that delivers the high-performance computing power that is a critical capability for many of today’s military systems including radar, sonar, SIGINT and video processing for various aircraft or UAV programs.

I used to work on an imaging team at a big insurance company and we were required to store our images with a very particular lossless compression in a TIF file specifically because the law does not hold lossy compression as reliable.

    But, regarding jessepollard’s other statements:

“The place you don’t want errors is in the instruction stream.”

That’s not where the errors are. They’re in the calculation results from the non-errored instructions. And then, only in specific types of calculations.

“Images already have errors generated by every lossy compression algorithm.”

    True, but also irrelevant.

“Unfortunately, these same errors prevent it from being reliable in court.”

    True.

“Also doesn’t work well for facial recognition”

False. Facial recognition is already a fuzzy logic affair. Actually, facial recognition is a perfect example of inexactness in computing and would be a great application for these chips.

The MaKey MaKey Invention Kit enables nutty computer-connected creations like Playdough Super Mario controllers and water bucket Dance Dance Revolution triggers.

Go ahead, MaKey MaKey my day.

For the most part, keyboards just aren’t very exciting. They sit there and go clickety-clack. What if you want a keyboard that goes squish-squash or splish-splash? Then you turn to the MaKey MaKey Invention Kit.

MaKey MaKey is a kit that turns just about any object into a touchpad. It consists of a circuit board and a set of alligator clips.

A banana piano. What more could you possibly want? (Click to enlarge.)

Clip those clips onto fruit, people, or pieces of bread. Even pencil markings can work. Open up a Web site or a program, plug the board into your computer’s USB port, and you’re good to go.

This means that absurd notions like banana pianos, alphabet soup keyboards, and beach ball game controllers can come to life. The only limit is your imagination, what you can fit the alligator clips onto, and a little bit of electrical conduction.

MaKey MaKey works with most recent operating systems. Your computer just sees it as a regular input device, like a keyboard or mouse.

The invention kit is already making a splash on Kickstarter, having topped its $25,000 funding goal with 28 days left to go. The best part of all of this is that a full MaKey MaKey kit will only put you back $35. Banana piano, here I come!

Space optimised structured cabling systems and ICT rooms. You can find the Hubbell iFRAME on the Minitran website! – The iFRAME® Network Hardware Management System saves valuable data center floor space, provides more than 10% more rack space, looks much more organized and clean, and has one fifth the parts. The iFRAME® Network Hardware Management System was designed to align with two-foot data center floor tiles. That means eleven racks fit in the space of ten without sacrificing cable capacity. Because the top rack position is not lost to J-bolts when fastening ladder to the top, an extra rack “U” is gained. More than 10% more rack space in the same floor space. The cornerstone of the iFRAME® Network Hardware Management System is the iFRAME® Column. The iFRAME® Column is a super strong I-beam that gets bolted vertically to the floor every two feet. Network equipment is mounted between the columns while cable is run within the column. The exceptional strength of the columns supports a full complement of network gear from top to bottom. No longer is there any need to tie the top of each rack to the wall for rigidity or leave the top of a rack unused as with traditional cable management systems. The 2′ mounting pitch for the columns allows the iFRAME® Columns to align with the raised floor and dropped ceiling floor grid, greatly simplifying …

    ARLINGTON, Va.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–

On Friday, June 15, PBS KIDS premieres the SUPER WHY! Around the World Adventure, an on-air event featuring two new episodes of SUPER WHY!. This new special is the cornerstone of PBS KIDS summer learning initiative, an effort to help kids continue building key literacy skills throughout summer vacation. Research shows that students experience significant learning loss when they do not participate in educational activities during the summer months. To help bridge this summer learning gap, PBS KIDS is providing families with the SUPER WHY! Around the World Adventure, along with a host of other fun and educational content and activities across platforms.

When children go back to school in the fall, teachers typically spend between four and six weeks re-teaching material that students have forgotten over the summer, said Lesli Rotenberg, senior vice president, Childrens Media, PBS. We want to equip families with tools to prevent this summer slide, and to make summer a time for learning and exploring. At PBS KIDS, we know that kids learn the most from content that is both educational and engaging, which is why were offering a range of activities across platforms to help kids and parents build key skills while having fun this summer.

SUPER WHY! Around the World Adventure June 15

Two new episodes of the award-winning series created and produced by Out of the Blue Enterprises Super Why and the Around the World Adventure and Super Why and Naila and the Magic Map take the Super Readers around the world in back-to-back adventures in the SUPER WHY! Around the World Adventure. Both episodes will also be available online at PBSKIDS.org/video and on the free PBS KIDS Video App for iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch. Episode descriptions follow. Images are available on PBS PressRoom.

Super Why and the Around the World Adventure With the help of their teacher, Wyatt and his friends have contacted a girl from another school over the computer and are wondering where she lives. The Super Readers take a trip around the world with a wacky explorer named Wobblebottom, who is on the hunt for his friend Sophie. Will they be able to help Wobblebottom find his friend?

Super Why and Naila and the Magic Map Pig and his friends are playing when they find what looks like an Egyptian treasure map, but they cant make out the symbols! To search for some answers, the Super Readers soar into the book Naila and the Magic Map and explore the world of ancient Egypt. Will they be able to help Naila unravel the mysterious code that will unlock where the treasure lies?

PBS KIDS summer learning initiative will also include themed programming on-air, online and on mobile, as well as partnership activities to support literacy.

Summer Learning Theme Weeks Starting June 4

This summer, PBS KIDS will focus on literacy with 10 weeks of themed programming (check local listings). Each week will feature reading-related episodes from a different PBS KIDS series. Select episodes and clips will also be featured on PBSKIDS.org/video and on the free PBS KIDS Video App for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch, and games and activities will be available for kids at PBSKIDS.org/read and for parents at PBSPARENTS.org/read. Starting June 4, free episode downloads, video playlists and other downloadable content will also be available on iTunes. Episodic images and episode descriptions are available on PBS PressRoom. The line-up includes:

    18 hrs.

    John Roach

Itsy-bitsy, super-speedy computers of the future may be grown with bacteria, according to researchers whove already harnessed a magnet-making microbe to start building hard-drive components.

The little living factories maycome in handy as the computer industry races to build smaller and smaller components at the nanoscale for supercomputers the size of a pinhead.

Weve already seen a hard drive that stores a bit of data with just 12 atoms and a four-atom-wide wire that could get information in and out of quantum bits in tomorrows quantum computers.

Researchers at the United Kingdoms University of Leeds and Japans Tokyo University of Technology have focused their attention on an aquatic microbe that eats iron to create tiny magnets.

Magnetospirillum magneticum swim following Earths magnetic field, a trick they are able to do because of an iron diet. When they eat iron, proteins inside their bodies interact with it to produce tiny crystals of the mineral magnetite, the BBC explains.

The research team replicated the behavior going on inside the bacteria on the outside of the cell wall, making the magnetic material available for hard drives, according the University of Leeds. More details are provided in university press release:

In a process akin to potato-printing on a much smaller scale, this protein is attached to a gold surface in a checkerboard pattern and placed in a solution containing iron.

At a temperature of 80C, similarly-sized crystals of magnetite form on the sections of the surface covered by the protein. The team are now working to reduce the size of these islands of magnets, in order to make arrays of single nanomagnets. They also plan to vary the magnetic materials that this protein can control.

It takes money to make money. Most investors know that, but with business media so focused on the “how much,” very few investors bother to ask, “How fast?”

When judging a company’s prospects, how quickly it turns cash outflows into cash inflows can be just as important as how much profit it’s booking in the accounting fantasy world we call “earnings.” This is one of the first metrics I check when I’m hunting for the market’s best stocks. Today, we’ll see how it applies to Super Micro Computer (Nasdaq: SMCI) .

Let’s break this downIn this series, we measure how swiftly a company turns cash into goods or services and back into cash. We’ll use a quick, relatively foolproof tool known as the cash conversion cycle, or CCC for short.

Why does the CCC matter? The less time it takes a firm to convert outgoing cash into incoming cash, the more powerful and flexible its profit engine is. The less money tied up in inventory and accounts receivable, the more available to grow the company, pay investors, or both.

To calculate the cash conversion cycle, add days inventory outstanding to days sales outstanding, then subtract days payable outstanding. Like golf, the lower your score here, the better. The CCC figure for Super Micro Computer for the trailing 12 months is 70.6.

For younger, fast-growth companies, the CCC can give you valuable insight into the sustainability of that growth. A company that’s taking longer to make cash may need to tap financing to keep its momentum. For older, mature companies, the CCC can tell you how well the company is managed. Firms that begin to lose control of the CCC may be losing their clout with their suppliers (who might be demanding stricter payment terms) and customers (who might be demanding more generous terms). This can sometimes be an important signal of future distress — one most investors are likely to miss.

In this series, I’m most interested in comparing a company’s CCC to its prior performance. Here’s where I believe all investors need to become trend-watchers. Sure, there may be legitimate reasons for an increase in the CCC, but all things being equal, I want to see this number stay steady or move downward over time.

Source: S&P Capital IQ. Dollar amounts in millions. FY = fiscal year. TTM = trailing 12 months.

Because of the seasonality in some businesses, the CCC for the TTM period may not be strictly comparable to the fiscal-year periods shown in the chart. Even the steadiest-looking businesses on an annual basis will experience some quarterly fluctuations in the CCC. To get an understanding of the usual ebb and flow at Super Micro Computer, consult the quarterly-period chart below.

Super soldier Captain America may have had excellent vision back in the 40s, but modern soldiers may have the opportunity to outstrip the Avengers sight with Predator-style vision.

Innovegas iOptik contact lenses sharpen real world vision while simultaneously simulating a 3D HD panoramic screen. The company hopes to gain FDA approval this year — and the Department of Defense has recently placed an order for a prototype.

HUDs (head-up displays) that present a virtual computer screen to the viewer have become increasingly advanced and complex. But military models, notably bulky helmets for fighter pilots that overlay data on targets, tend to be cumbersome.

A computer interface thats entirely hands-free could give troops a clear advantage.

For example, soldiers, marines, airmen or seamen who need their hands free for weapons use could study a detailed map without toying with a handheld or dropping their gaze. The iOptik system could also potentially provide real-time feeds from satellites, drones or even a teammates helmet camera, displayed as if on a transluscent computer screen to a fighter on the move.

Innovegas iOptik contact lenses are intended to be fielded together with a far more compact HUD unit; picture Oakley sunglasses modified to allow the images to be projected onto them.

There are two primary options for this type of display: VR (virtual reality) systems that swap a soldiers real world view for a computer generated one, and AR (augmented reality) systems that superimpose computer generated images over reality.

Research undertaken by the company has been funded by DARPA and the National Science Foundation and their AR lenses work by using two different filters in each lens — in effect the soldier can see through the data to the real world.

The system creates a dual-focus effect for the eye by sending light to different parts of the pupil; the retina sees both images in focus simultaneously. A data feed (or satellite feed, or map info or whatever) is sent from the center of each lens to the center of the pupil while light from the real world is directed by the outer part of the lens to the rim of the pupil.

The human eye has a restricted capacity to focus on very near objects, leading to solutions that make data appear as if on a computer screen several feet away; Innovegas iOptik creates the effect of viewing a 20-foot television at a distance of 10 feet.
